Annonaceae, Annona spraguei

May 13, 2008

Annona spraguei: Endemic to Panama and endangered in the wild. I collected seed from wild stands in Soberania National Park. The fruit is about the size of a fist, with a sweet edible pulp and numerous seeds. The fruit looks like a smaller version of Biriba (Rollinia deliciosa) only smaller with thinner, longer protuberances. I have a batch of trees growing in Conservatorio, they’re doing well, growing steadily. I might try to graft it, just for fun, and to have dwarfed specimen trees for the city.

I had pretty good germination from seed I collected from the wild in Panama. They have to be very fresh.
