World in review

World in Review is a collection of five photo galleries curated by Associated Press photo editors from each region of the world: Asia, Europe and Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean and the United States.

This month’s selection from the Middle East includes images of Egyptians carrying lit flares while gathered to protest in Cairo, the sky in Yemen is illuminated by anti-aircraft fire, and Israelis honor fallen soldiers on Memorial Day.

In the U.S., demonstrators react to the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, a child stands at the reflecting pool before a remembrance ceremony at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, and the moon rises in its waning period over the New York City skyline.

In Asia, military personnel take part in a parade celebrating the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, destroyed villages sit on mountain tops near the epicenter of Nepal’s massive earthquake, and Pro-democracy protesters fall at a rally in Hong Kong.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the Calbuco volcano erupts near Puerto Varas, parishioners carry a statue of Jesus Christ during Holy Week celebrations in Peru and a ballerina performs at a youth fair in her neighborhood in Santiago, Cuba.

In Europe and Africa, a rescuer cradles a child from a merchant vessel carrying migrants in the Sicilian harbor of Pozzallo, Italy, a woman belonging to Romania’s Armenian community attends a religious service in memory of Armenians killed by the Ottoman Turks, and handmade firework rockets target a church during Greek Orthodox Easter celebrations.
