[1 l.] (viii) [451] (3 l.) 12mo. French. Fully bound in contemporary brown calf-skin leather. 5 raised bands. 6 compartments. Burgundy Morocco title stamp with gilt lettering. Expertly repaired at spine and edges of boards. Protected with clear lacquer coating. Vertical crack along center of spine has been sealed and repaired. Tight binding and solid boards. Slight shelf wear. Minor bumping to corners. Slight rubbing to boards. Scuffing to board edges. Minor discoloration around outer edges of endpapers. Otherwise, clean, unmarked pages. Inlaid woodcut flourishes throughout. Good text block. Text is crisp and clear. A beautifully preserved volume in very good condition.<br><br>Compte de Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopedic author. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. It has been said that "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century." His anthology on Natural history has been reprinted and translated numerous times, this being an earlier edition in original French.
