Costa Rica vs. Greece: Goals and Highlights for World Cup 2014 Round of 16

Costa Rica's fairy-tale run at the World Cup continues, after a penalty shootout win against Greece took them through to the quarterfinals.

There was little to report from the first half hour. This highlight of Georgios Samaras getting caught offside was about as exciting as it got.

And then, in the 37th minute, Greece came very close to taking the lead. Dimitrios Salpingidis met a cross at the far post, only for Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas to make the save.

The second half began with an early goal. It was Bryan Ruiz who got it—steering a finish into the bottom corner to give Costa Rica the lead.

Greece were lucky to avoid giving a penalty away soon after, when Vasileios Torosidis clearly handled in the box.

Greece were then given encouragement with the sending off of Oscar Duarte for his second bookable offence. Here's the tackle that earned him his marching orders.

Costa Rica looked like they would hold on, but Greece found an equaliser in added time to take the match into an extra 30.  It was Sokratis Papastathopoulos who came up with the vital goal.

Extra-time was a largely one-sided affair, with Greece dominant against the 10 men of Costa Rica. At one point, they broke with five vs. two, but a goal was not forthcoming.

Greece would have one final chance. It fell to Kostas Mitroglou, but Navas denied him. To penalties we went. 

After seven straight penalties were scored, Navas pulled off a brilliant save to deny Theofanis Gekas.

Costa Rica's Michael Umana then stepped up to score the winning penalty.
