Twitter Reacts to Oscar Duarte's Red Card vs. Greece in 2014 World Cup

Costa Rica were forced to play the last 23 minutes of their round-of-16 World Cup clash with Greece with only 10 men after centre-back Oscar Duarte was sent off after picking up his second yellow card of the match.

You can see below the foul that earned Duarte a second booking, as per Bleacher Report UK:

The challenge didn't look too vicious, but players always have to be extremely careful when carrying a yellow. Duarte wasn't, and he was punished.

According to OptaJack, the 25-year-old is the first Costa Rican player to see red at the World Cup:

When Duarte was sent packing, Los Ticos were holding onto a 1-0 lead over the Greeks after Bryan Ruiz scored the opener in the 52nd minute. Costa Rica's calling card has been their defense, but down a man, they were in for a long final 20-plus minutes.

Goal's Jon Arnold also pointed out that Duarte's dismissal not only left a massive hole in Costa Rica's lineup but also forced coach Jorge Luis Pinto to slot in a much weaker defender:

Of course, Duarte's sending off means that he'd miss Costa Rica's quarterfinal match with the Netherlands, if they get that far. That incident could have a much larger impact than just Sunday night's match.

The Dutch have no shortage of attackers. With Louis van Gaal's tactical obsession, he'll be devising every way to capitalize on Duarte's absence.
