Tottenham Transfer News: Spurs Sign Ben Davies and Michel Vorm

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly agreed to a complex transfer deal with Swansea City that will see defender Ben Davies and goalkeeper Michel Vorm move to White Hart Lane, with Gylfi Sigurdsson and £5 million going the other way. Swansea announced the deals on Wednesday:

Swansea City can confirm the signing of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson for an undisclosed fee, while Ben Davies and Michel Vorm have moved in the opposite direction.

The Icelandic international passed a medical on Tuesday before agreeing a four-year deal.

Keeper Vorm and left-back Davies, meanwhile, have both completed moves to Tottenham for undisclosed fees.

The club had long been interested in Davies, and according to The Daily Telegraph's Matt Law, new manager Mauricio Pochettino has now made the Wales international his first official signing, along with Dutch international Vorm.

Sigurdsson has previously spent time on loan with the Swans, and with chances in Tottenham's young midfield unit scarce, the 24-year-old is a logical casualty as Pochettino starts his tenure in north London.

While Vorm will give Spurs some excellent depth behind Hugo Lloris and Brad Friedel (likely becoming the team's primary back-up to Lloris), the main piece in this transfer agreement is obviously Davies.

The 21-year-old left-back enjoyed a great 2013-14 season with Swansea and was one of the hottest names on the transfer market, with several clubs reportedly interested in his services. Liverpool were considered to be the front-runners for Davies, per the Daily Express' Alex Harris, but it now appears the defender is on his way to London instead.  

Davies is remarkably polished for such a young player, and he combines his great defensive prowess with solid technique and athleticism moving forward. The Welshman isn't the fastest left-back in the Premier League, but he can hold his own when isolated against wingers and usually positions himself well to deal with quicker players.

As far as young defenders go, Davies is a safe bet to at least be a solid contributor. He has already proven his worth at Premier League level, and as a defensive anchor, he's already a better option than Danny Rose.

With Sigurdsson likely not featuring in Pochettino's long-term plans, Daniel Levy's intricate transfer structure for the duo of Vorm and Davies could present a massive coup for the Lilywhites.

Vorm is a talented and productive stopper in his own right. He will also understand his position in Tottenham's hierarchy, having just spent the 2014 World Cup as a back-up in Louis van Gaal's Dutch squad.

Fans will have to wait for both players to complete their medicals before Tottenham make the move official, with Davies likely the first player to be unveiled as early as Monday.
