Garlic Chives

Allium tuberosum

Plant Details:

Plant Type: Perennial
Plant Family: Liliaceae
Plant Description: Fast-growing bulbous perennial native to China and Asia and used as an herb. The leaves may be used for flavoring and garnishing, similar to regular chives but with an added garlicky kick. Also valuable as an ornamental perennial for its round clusters of fragrant star-shaped white flowers that bloom in late summer and into fall. Will reseed and spread through rhizomes.

Maintenance:

Maintenance Type: Perennial - Herbaceous
Plant Care: Perennial - Herbaceous (soft-stemmed plants that die back in winter and regrow in spring): Remove spent blooms to promote rebloom later. Some plants tend to flop over after the first bloom and attempt to regrow from the base; in these cases, the old stems can be cut away in summer. As plants become dormant in the fall, remove dead leaves and stems.
