Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Dropped Cone, 2001

This giant ice-cream cone looks like it might have been dropped by an oversized child roaming the city of Cologne like a modern-day King Kong, but it is in fact the work of American pop artist Claes Oldenburg and his wife and frequent creative collaborator Coosje van Bruggen. The duo were commissioned to create this whimsical work by the German shopping mall upon which it appears to have landed, and although Oldenburg has made many monumental structures based on comfort food, this creamy corner embellishment is arguably his most impressive (s)coup.
