The United States men’s national team (USMNT) is set to play a high-profile friendly against Brazil before this summer’s Copa América, according to a report in the Brazilian media.

Brazil eyeing North American opposition

The sports newspaper O Globo says Brazil are planning warm-ups against the USMNT and Mexico ahead of the Copa América, which is to be hosted by the United States.

O Globo adds that the Brazilians’ clash against the Stars and Stripes would be played in Orlando, Florida.

Brazil and the USMNT have both been confirmed as top seeds in next week’s Copa América draw, together with Mexico and World Cup winners Argentina.

When did Brazil and USMNT last play each other?

Brazil and the USMNT’s most recent meeting came in September 2018, when goals by Roberto Firmino and Neymar gave the five-time world champions a 2-0 friendly win in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The teams’ last competitive clash was in the final of the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa, where Brazil also came out on top. Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan gave the Americans a 2-0 half-time lead in Johannesburg; however a Luís Fabiano doubled levelled the scores, before Lúcio completed the comeback for the Seleçao.

When is the 2024 Copa América?

The 2024 Copa América, which will be the 48th edition of the tournament, is to be played from 20 June to 14 July 2024.

Traditionally a competition that has been chiefly contested by South American countries, next year’s Copa América will also feature six teams from the North American, Central American and Caribbean region (CONCACAF).

CONCACAF’s representatives will be the four semi-finalists in the confederation’s 2023/24 Nations League - Mexico, Jamaica, Panama and the US - plus two of the losing Nations League quarter-finalists.

Playoffs will be held in March to decide which of Canada, Costa Rica, Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago claim CONCACAF’s last two Copa América berths.
