Brazil without Neymar- Will they stand?

Oh, we all know. It’s Brazil and they are very well the favorites to win their 6th on their home turf. Their formidable team is enough for most to just sit down and weep, for Brazil have had a brilliant time. And at the heart and soul of this Goliath is Neymar, the Brazilian wonder-kid. He has impressed most, if not all with his creativity, flair, dribbles and shooting. Being just 22 years old, he might very well carry the weight of Brazil for a real long time. But when god himself (Pele) worries about the pressure the prodigy is under right now, we can only wait and watch.

But is he critical to the Brazil team we all know?

Neymar - Center of Attraction

Neymar – Center of Attraction

Neymar , though at his first season with his new club F.C. Barcelona, has shut many critics by displaying class football out of his home-nation Brazil, where he played for his previous club, Santos.

As we can see here, although being injured twice in the same season he has done quite spectacularly. I on my personal opinion didn’t expect much from him. Starting almost every match, he has almost contributed in every match. Almost 3 shots per game and 15 goals, doesn’t show a good conversion rate, but the whole story is he is a winger who loves to come inside and take risks by trying shots which most wouldn’t attempt unless fully confident. Most don’t go in, but the ones which do make us jump for more.

What if,( Not jinxing it!) Neymar gets injured? Will the brazil squad be able to manage without him?

Let’s look at the other contenders for the spot. First up-          Bernard.

Bernard has been, well, I don’t know why he is in the final squad. He hasn’t played much for his team Shaktar this season, neither has he seen much of European cups(Champions league +Europa). The factor which keeps him in the team might be his young age and a chance for experience. He just like Neymar like to come on from the left and put some in. But he lacks the agility which Neymar has. He won’t be playing, that’s for sure!

What about Hulk?

He has undoubtedly had the season of his life. Yes, most of us didn’t even have a clue. His games at Zenit often go unnoticed and although he is credited for his talents, he is hugely undermined in front of his compatriot-in-arms Neymar. The top-scorer, he has been quite brilliant, having a better shot rate as well as a better rating. People might say that it’s because he is in an easier league, but I say it’s because he is the only one after Di Maria equal to Neymar in terms of agility, flair and shot accuracy+power in the sub-continent. But it’s obvious that he’ll be playing right alongside him so un-debatable, is it?

The striker who switches often,                Jo.

Honestly put the statistics just for the sake of it. He hasn’t played a lot this year, but we know what he is capable of! An imposing aerial threat, which neither Neymar or Hulk could match, he gives great long passes as well as short key passes. The former Manchester City striker is very well capable of troubling quite some with his long balls, but as far as the dribbling is considered, he doesn’t even belong in the same league. Again, with the work of crosses/ key passes/long balls often done by their fullback pair of Dani Alves and Marcelo, a big nope from my side if he is even considered a replacement!

Brazil generally play a 4-3-3 formation, direct passing, full-on attack and aggressive. Passing plays a very important role in their game. Lets match them up.

Just look at passing rate of these players. As I claimed earlier, Hulk has a better key-pass/game ratio as well as no. of crosses/game ratio. We can also say that neymar has a better pass success rate and higher no. of average passes but let us remember he plays the tiki-taka at Barcelona and that is bound to happen. He does have higher number of assists  than Hulk and that is where he stands out. Creating the game as well as taking the lead. Bernard hasn’t had enough chances to prove his worth,so I don’t think it will be right to judge him equal to these two. He isn’t a passer-pusher player and plays rather fast-a quick through or maybe a one touch play. quite the reason why his average pass per game is that low.

FINAL OPINION:

Although Brazil have one of the strongest teams this time around, they don’t have the most idiot-proof team. I think Scolari might have missed this part of the team selection. The only player who is capable enough of replacing Neymar is Hulk and quite appropriately playing along-side him. Jo does have the capability but his lack of regular action apart from the international matches creates a mist of doubt. And quite obviously Bernard is too young to handle the game. The team without Neymar might manage against the smaller teams but as soon as they reach the round of 16, It’s a dead end for them. Hulk from one side wouldn’t be enough to help them win the game! Let’s just hope for the spirit of the game that this doesn’t happen and we have the best world Cup we have seen yet! For the beautiful game!

GROUP H – A Union Of Devils

GROUP H

Belgium

Algeria

Russia

Korea Republic

OUTLOOK

Yes, it is the union of the Devils that you are going to see in this group which includes two teams with the nickname “The Red Devils”. If every “non-South American” team was asked to choose a group they liked to be in during the FIFA World Cup Draw, then one of the sure choices would have been group H. It’s not because of the strength of the teams but because there is no South American team in the group. With the games to be played in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte, it’s certain that the teams who are able to adjust to the conditions quickly will progress further. Belgium looks the clear favourites to make it to the round of 16. Fabio Capello’s Russia looks another team to qualify from the group. But with Algeria and South Korea, who have created many upsets and surprises in World Cups over the years, the group can turn out to be one of the most interesting groups in this year’s football carnival. Let’s get straight into team analysis.

bel

BELGIUM

Nickname : Rode Duivels (Red Devils)

FIFA Ranking : 11

Best Finish : Fourth at 1986 World cups

Belgium is a team that has reached six successive World Cups from 1982 through 2002 by playing qualification rounds, a record bettered only by Spain .On top of that, in that era the Belgian team reached the knockout phase five times out of six. This was referred by the pundits as the golden era of Belgian football as the Belgians never really made an impact after 2002 and before 1982. But at present, just like Brazil, they have come up with a young squad which has shown a lot of talent and promise. On paper, they surely look like a team that can better the fourth place record that they got in 1986.

Manager : Marc Robert Wilmots

Though not a person who is famous worldwide, Marc Robert Wilmots is greatly famous in Belgium not only as a footballer or football manager but as a politician too. He was in the Senate for two years for the Mouvement Réformateur party. As a player he is the highest scorer for Belgium in World Cups with 5 goals. He was also instrumental in winning trophies for his clubs including Schalke 04. With a young squad, a politician’s shrewdness and a footballing mind, it will be interesting to see how Wilmots will approach this World Cup.

Team & TacticsBelgium

The team has been named the dark horses of the tournament by the pundits and the depth of this squad makes it the one of the strongest as well as the youngest contenders for the World Cup. The strength of Belgium lies in its defence though the strong attacking midfield cannot be written off. With Thibaut Courtois as the goalkeeper and Vincent Kompany as one of the defenders, the opposition strikers will face a tough time netting a goal. Captain Vincent Kompany has been one of the best leaders this season and his Premier league triumph will surely boost his confidence. Tottenham’s left back/centre back Jan Vertoghen is another promising player to watch out for. Atletico Madrid’s Toby Alderweireld and Bayern Munich’s Daniel Van Buyten makes the Belgian defence one of the best in the tournament.

The midfield contains a group of highly talented young footballers. Marouane Fellaini and Alex Witsel are the likely defensive midfielders to make it to the starting eleven though both of them have not been in good touch this previous season. The Belgian attack will be mainly concentrated on Chelsea starlets Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. The sheer pace and dribbling of Eden Hazard as well the finishing of Lukaku can make Belgium live up to their name of Dark Horses. Wolfsburg’s Kevin De Bruyne and Everton’s Mirallas can make the midfield more attacking and dynamic. The general formation of the team will be 4-3-3 .The squad depth of Belgium is impressive as players like Simon Mignolet, Thomas Vermaelen, Nacer Chadli, Steven Defour, Moussa Dembélé and Adnan Januzaj will fight for a place in the starting 11. With striker Christian Benteke injured and Lukaku doubtful for the first match it will be interesting to see which formation will the manger adopts.

ALGERIA

Nickname: Les Fennecs (The Desert Foxes)

FIFA Ranking : 22

Best Finish : Group Stages (1982,1986,2010)

Algeria has produced the soccer legend Zinedine Zidane. Though he represented France, he admitted that he was Algerian by descent. The team has been improving after making consecutive World Cup qualifications. The 2014 World Cup will be the fourth for Algeria with the team exiting at Round 1 in the previous three. Though they narrowly qualified after winning the playoffs, their comeback was nothing less than inspirational as they overturned a 3-2 away loss with a 0-1 home win against Burkina-Faso. The team is not expected to make it to the playoffs but African teams have been always a hard nut to crack.

Manager : Vahid Halilhodžić.

He is one of the most experienced managers in the current World Cup. The Bosnian has managed around 9 clubs and 2 countries (including Algeria). PSG, Lille, Côte d’Ivoire and Stade Rennais are some of the notable teams that he has managed. He was successful in integrating a successful bunch of attacking youths in the Algerian team. The team lost just 5 out of 26 matches after he took charge of the team and much of the country’s hope will rest on him as they face Belgium in their first match.

Team & TacticsAlgeria-XI1

The team’s strength lies in their young attack as well as the midfield. A lot of promising youngsters like Yacine Brahimi, Islam Slimani and Sofiane Feghouli have been in good form during the qualifiers. Sofiene Feghouli will be undoubtedly the key player for them as the Valencia midfielder has been in good form for the national side. Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb will be another key player to watch out for. The team’s defence will be the major concern for Halilhodžić. The team is likely to play a 4-1-4-1 formation with Sporting Lisbon’s Islam Slimani as the lone striker. Algeria is a team with an exciting bunch of young players but lack experience in big matches and perhaps this is why I feel that they won’t make it to the playoffs.

RUSSIA

Nickname : Sbornaya (‘Team’ or ‘Selection’)

FIFA Ranking : 18

Best Finish : Fourth place in 1966 as USSR

Even before the communist revolution, football was a famous sport in Russia. As Russia was part of the Soviet Union till the 1990 World Cup, this will be their 10th. Soviet Union’s best finish was fourth place in 1966 world cups. But after the country of Russia was born they were unable to clear the group stages in both 2002 and 1994. The past few years has seen a revival in Russian football especially after the arrival of Fabio Capello as their manger. They finished first in a group containing Portugal and Israel during the World Cup qualifiers. This form clearly makes them the second favourites to clear the group. Politically Russia is being a little aggressive right now and if they carry a bit of this aggression in football, then Putin will end up congratulating the team at July 13.

Manager : Fabio CapelloRussia-XI1

He is undoubtedly one of the most experienced managers in this year’s World Cup and is the highest paid too. His interest in the collection of fine art (a personal collection worth 10 million pounds) was truly reflected in his style of play as well as in his tactics. Though the Italian won many trophies while he managed clubs like AC Milan, Roma and Real Madrid; his managerial form dipped while he was in charge of the England national team for the 2010 World Cup as they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Germany. But his form with the Russian team during the Qualifiers was exceptional. With a stereotypical Italian approach, he was able to bring much more quality to the defence of the team.

Team & Tactics

Capello will be going with a 4-2-3-1 formation for the World Cup. Their goal keeper Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow) has played every minute of the qualifiers and has conceded just 5 goals. Along with the goal keeper, Russia’s strongpoint will be its defence which was exceptional during the qualifiers. Vasili Berezutskiy can turn out to be one of the key players in the Russian defence. Andrey Eshchenko, Sergey Ignashevich and Dmitry Kombarov are likely to complete the team’s back four. Igor Denisov and Roman Shirokov are likely to do the job of defensive midfielders. Alexander Kerzhakov and Alan Dzagoev are the players to watch out for the opponent defenders. Alan Dzagoev’s form was exceptional during UEFA Euro 2012 and will hope to carry that form on to the World Cup.

KOREA REPUBLIC (South Korea)

Nickname : Taeguk Warriors ( The Red Devils)

FIFA ranking : 55

Best Finish : Fourth at 2002 World Cup

They will have excellent memories of the 2002 tournament on home soil, in which they reached the semi-finals. But away from their home nation, their record in major tournaments leaves much to be desired. But yes, things are changing in South Korea and they can be inspired from their own citizen PSY who has conquered the whole world with his “Gangam Style”. The team has caused so many upsets in World Cup history and their only chance of proceeding to the round of 16 is by causing some more of them.

Manager : Hong Myung-BoSouth-Korea-XI1

Considered as one of the greatest Asian footballers of all time, he was instrumental in the country’s 2002 World Cup campaign, ending up winning the Bronze Ball. His experience in World Cups is something that every Asian player probably dreams of. He has played 4 consecutive World Cups and hence, his experience will play a key role in his role as a manger.

Team & Tactics

The team will be mainly relying on their experienced manger this World Cup. The team’s performance in the qualifiers was not so inspiring as they made it to the second place only due to better goal difference. The team will employ a 4-2-3-1 formation likely . Son Heung Min had a reasonable season with Bayer Leverkusen and has the ability to score goals and create chances for the Koreans. Sunderland’s midfielder Ki Sung Yeung also had an excellent season and was instrumental in getting his club out of relegation this season. The power of the team lies in their attack and can cause some big upsets if all of them deliver like “Gangam Style”.

OUTLOOK

Group G promises to be one of the most competitive groups in this years World Cup and labelled by many footballing pundits as the “Group of Death” (not IMO but these guys know much more and I just play FIFA) but having said that, will this group offer 6 matches of scintillating football or will this be another stroll in the park for heavily fancied Germany and Portugal? Well, lets have a look at the teams and see what they have got.

GERMANY

Nickname : die Mannschaft (The Team)

FIFA Ranking : 2

Manager : Joachim Löw

At the helm since 2006, Joachim Low signed a new contract until 2016 earlier this year but the pressure is on to win a trophy after some agonising near-misses. His win percentage is the highest of any Germany manager.

How They Qualified

Germany breezed through their qualifying group, only dropping points in a bizarre 4-4 draw with Sweden (Ah, Zlatan) having led 4-0. They scored 36 times in 10 matches, with seven of their attacking players totalling three goals or more.

World Cup Record

Germany have reached the final seven times, winning for the third time in 1990.
Runners-up in 2002, they were third in 2006 and 2010.

Team & Tactics

Style & formation : Blessed with far more flair than many Germany sides of the past, their fluid 4-2-3-1 is underpinned by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira anchoring the side from the base of midfield.

Ahead of them lies creative fulcrum Mesut Ozil, who is likely to be flanked by Thomas Muller plus one from a number of other options. Marco Reus, a likely starter, withdrew through injury on 7 June(very sad, my girlfriend loves that guy). Reus was set to take the World by storm, but fate decided otherwise. It is like the Ballack’s 2010 story all over again.

Strengths :

Neuer - The Best there is?

Neuer – The Best there is?

They have an incredible array of attacking midfielders that guarantee goals. Manuel Neuer can lay claim to being the world’s best goalkeeper(or can he? See : Gianluigi Buffon) and Philipp Lahm, whatever position he plays in, brings calmness and tactical nous along with his vice-captain Schweinsteiger. The free-scoring Muller has a priceless knack of being in the right place at the right time.

Weaknesses : More than you’d imagine. Left-back is an issue for coach Joachim Low, while the defence as a whole has been porous of late and was given a torrid time by Chile’s movement in a friendly in March(go Sanchez!). Khedira and Schweinsteiger have had injury-hit seasons and can Ozil shake off his Arsenal torpor?
Miroslav Klose is just one goal shy of Ronaldo’s all-time World Cup finals tally of 15, but turning 36 means his powers are surely on the wane.

Key Player

Philipp Lahm was described by Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola this season as “the most intelligent player I’ve ever coached”. The best right-back in Europe over the last decade has made a seamless transition this season under the Bayern boss into the Sechser (sixer) position in midfield and may well do the same for Germany.

AND

All of them! Seriously, take your pick. From Mesut Ozil to Thomas Muller, every single player in this German side is something quite extraordinary. They have a “player to watch” in almost every position on the pitch and if you are not entertained by this team, you do not have a footballing soul.

One To Watch

Borussia Dortmund’s Erik Durm has been transformed from a forward into a full-back over the last year, and his club manager Jurgen Klopp has called him an “extraordinary talent”. Blessed with incredible stamina and pace, 22-year-old Durm has usurped Marcel Schmelzer at left-back for club and country.

PORTUGAL

Nickname : Selecção das Quinas (National Team of the Shields)

FIFA Ranking : 4

Manager : Paulo Bento

Paulo Bento was banned for six months after he manhandled officials during a controversial Euro 2000 semi-final with France but he has matured into a top-class coach. Capped 35 times, he has the respect of his players and his greatest triumph has arguably been getting Cristiano Ronaldo, his former team-mate at Sporting Lisbon, to replicate his extraordinary club form on the international stage.
Derided in some quarters for so-called negative tactics, he recently had his contract extended to the end of Euro 2016.

How They Qualified

They progressed via the play-offs for the second successive World Cup, with Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Sweden equalling Pauleta’s national record 47-goal tally, which he has since broken. They only lost to Russia in their group but finished second after drawing with Northern Ireland and Israel, twice.

World Cup Record

Portugal are heading to their sixth World Cup. They came third on their debut in 1966 and were also semi-finalists in 2006. Three years ago, they lost to eventual champions Spain in the last 16.

The Team

With Cristiano Ronaldo in your team, the sky’s the limit. However, getting out of a very tricky group will be their primary objective before they can start thinking of a potential quarter-final against Argentina. The likes of Pepe and Joao Moutinho give them a strong spine, but they remain without a world-class striker, meaning the goalscoring burden rests with Ronaldo.

Pepe - Run for your life.

Pepe – Run for your life.

They could be forgiven for thinking they are playing in Lisbon such is the expected level of support for them from the Brazilian public. There have been too many laboured team displays since they were beaten on penalties by Spain in their Euro 2012 semi-final.

Key Player

Who else but CR7? Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo scored 51 goals in 47 club appearances this season and already has a museum dedicated to him. Debate rages about who is better out of him and Lionel Messi, but in Portugal they now argue over who wins out of Ronaldo and Eusebio. However, carrying injuries into this tournament won’t help his bid to right the wrongs of two disappointing World Cups for him in 2006 and 2010.

One To Watch

Blessed with a calmness that belies his 21 years, William Carvalho made an ice-cool debut off the bench in the play-off second leg against Sweden. The Angolan-born defensive midfielder has had a superb first season in the first team at Sporting Lisbon and the likes of Manchester United have been circling. A Sporting fan, he famously turned Benfica officials away from his house when they tried to sign him as a 13 year old.

GHANA

Nickname : The Black Stars

FIFA Ranking : 37

The Black Stars were fancied to repeat, or even improve on, their run to the quarter-finals in 2010 in Brazil. That was until the draw was made and they were pitted with the world’s second and fourth-ranked sides.

However, confidence is not an issue in the Ghana camp and why should it be? Their team, offensively at least, is packed with experience and world-class talent. Michael Essien’s return has been crucial, while Asamoah Gyan’s time in the Middle East hasn’t blunted his goalscoring touch.

They though will be desperate to prove a point after feeling cheated after Luis Suarez’s heroics ( See: Uruguayan “Hand of god”). A semi-final place was up for grabs if not for Gyan’s horrendous penalty miss.

Manager : James Kwesi Appiah

Former Ghana captain James Kwesi Appiah spent four years as assistant with the national side before his promotion. Softly spoken and unassuming, “I’m a coach who doesn’t talk that much”, the Ghana players have nicknamed him the ‘Silent Killer’ and he certainly isn’t afraid to take on the big names in his dressing room if they step out of line. He wasn’t a popular appointment originally, as he wasn’t deemed to be high profile enough. He is the first Ghanaian to lead his nation at a World Cup.

How They Qualified

Having won their group with five wins out of six, Ghana thrashed Egypt 6-1 in the home leg of their play-off to ensure a 2-1 loss in the return leg was academic.
They ended as the top scorers in African qualifying with 25 goals.

World Cup Record

In 2010, Ghana seemed certain to become the first African semi-finalists after Uruguay’s Luis Suarez was sent off for handling on the line in the dying seconds of extra-time. However, Asamoah Gyan missed the spot-kick and Ghana then lost the penalty shootout. Brazil will be their third successive finals, having first qualified in 2006 when they went on to reach the last 16.

Key Player

Michael Essien’s return from international exile came just at the right time for Ghana. ‘The Bison’, who says he sleeps for “up to 12 hours a day” was certainly wide awake during the epic play-off thrashing of Egypt where he reminded everyone just how an effective and tactically adept midfielder he is. He has a special bond with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who says he would play him in any position bar “goalkeeper or striker”.

One To Watch

Kwadwo Asamoah has quietly established himself a key man for both club and country. At Juventus, where he has won two titles in two seasons, the midfielder is described as “irreplaceable” by manager Antonio Conte. He has won Ghana’s Footballer of the Year award for the last two years.

Fact

The brothers Boateng (Ghana/Germany): You probably already know this, but Kevin Boateng from Ghana will clash against his brother Jerome Boateng from Germany when the two sides meet on 21 June. They played each other in South Africa in 2010, where Germany ran out winners 1-0. Ghana has knocked the United States out of the past two FIFA World Cups, and will likely be focusing on beating Jurgen Klinsmann’s side once again.

USA

Nickname : The Stars and Stripes

FIFA Ranking : 13

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann says the minimum aim is to reach the knockout stage, and a national record 16 wins in 2013 – including against an admittedly depleted Germany – gives cause for confidence. Defence is a concern and then there’s the lack of continuity – 37 players were used in qualifying.

Manager : Jurgen Klinsmann

Since taking over three years ago former Germany player and head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has led the US to a series of notable results. These include their first victories away in Italy and in Mexico, a debut win in Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier and a victory over his native Germany. This, plus a record-breaking 12-game winning sequence in 2013, led to his contract being extended to end of the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia. His new deal, signed in December 2013, also gives him the extra title of the US Soccer Federation’s technical director.

How They Qualified

They recovered from an opening 2-1 defeat by Honduras to finish four points clear at the top of the six-team final group phase, winning all five home matches.

World Cup Record

The USA will be playing in their 10th World Cup, and seventh in succession.
They were third in 1930 and quarter-finalists in 2002, losing 1-0 to Germany.

Key Player

In order for the U.S. national team to upset the group’s heavyweights, manager Jurgen Klinsmann needs a player who can surprise the opposition. Enter teenage Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Julian Green.

He made a positive impression in a cameo showing against Mexico back in April. That was enough to earn the precocious 18-year-old a seat on the plane to Brazil.
Klinsmann will need Green to show no fear against illustrious opponents. He must use his impressive straight-line pace to torment defences. With national icon and top scorer Landon Donovan dropped much to the shock of the American fans, Klinsmann will look to his younger stars to justify the bold move.

With eight goals during the qualifying campaign, and 36 in 103 caps, captain Clint Dempsey continues to provide the attacking thrust he demonstrated so regularly in the Premier League with Fulham and Tottenham. An honourable mention, too, for Sunderland forward Jozy Altidore, who excelled during the final qualifying group phase.

One To Watch

Nicknamed ‘Zeus’, Graham Zusi has made lightning quick progression in international football. The right-sided midfielder is a gifted passer and deadball specialist, and his tremendous work ethic makes him a Klinsmann favourite. He is not just popular in America, in Mexico he is known as San Zusi (Saint Zusi) as his goal against Panama helped Mexico make it to Brazil.

PREDICTIONS

My prediction for this group has to be what the world already seems to know, Germany and Portugal to progress while Ghana and USA to act as stepping stones for the formers.

Having said that, this is the beautiful game of football and even though Germany and Portugal look very strong on paper, I would like to remind our readers that games are not won on paper.

The determination and dedication of the players on the hot and humid grounds of Brazil will prove to be the deciding factors as to who will move on to face the other table toppers.

GROUP F – No Sweat Argentina

GROUP F

Argentina

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Iran

Nigeria

OUTLOOK

What does this group have in store for us? Well Argentina couldn’t have been happier about this draw, and probably you shall hear all the Messi fans go yada-yada-yada about the goals he might score against the weaker teams.

As it stands, Argentina is “apparently” going to sweep all the three games, Nigeria predicted to come second and not much can be said about the results of the other two teams. Well not many are bothered about any team but Argentina, unless you happen to be a Chelsea fan, in which case it will be “GOOO JOHN OBI MIKEL!” . Rest aside, yes it is a relatively dull and boring group and lets see if there are any upsets lined up to make it more interesting.

ARGENTINA

Nickname : La Albiceleste (The White and Sky Blue)

FIFA Ranking : 5

Having won the World Cup two times already, Argentina have always been a force to reckon with. They always have had the potential to go all the way and usually don’t give in to surprising defeats at the big stage. This time, having probably the most majestic attacking options (if I may say so), Argentina certainly are big contenders and given how easily poised they are in this group, they certainly have many odds in their favour. Their skill, commitment and very well-known counter-attacking style will certainly prove to be a tough fight for any opponent. Oh before the Barca fans kill me, “they have MESSI too.”

Manager : Alejandro Sabella

Argentinian coach giving the “Don’t you dare question why I dint pick Tevez” expression.

Argentinian coach giving the “Don’t you dare question why I dint pick Tevez” expression.

Definitely not as well-known as Diego Maradona was, when he was coach last time. However not many of the great coaches were great players. So let’s see if Alejandro can help Argentina get lucky a third time this year.

Team & Tactics

Well yes, surprisingly there are other players apart from Lionel Messi in Argentina. In fact I believe Argentina have the most talented set of attacking options amongst all other teams right now. I know for a fact that I would love to have Messi , Aguero, Higuain, Lavezzi, Di Maria all playing in my dream team. Wait, where is Carlos Tevez you ask?! For very unobvious reasons, Carlos Tevez dint make it to the squad let alone the playing XI. They do have decent midfielders , likes of Gago and Mascherano are pretty good, given that they have such quality attackers in front of them. The back line also looks good enough with likes of Pablo Zabaleta , Demichelis – both part of Premier League winning team this season as well as Garay and Fernandez. However the key man is definitely Lionel Messi, you will see teams deploying as many four men marking him, showing how great a player he is. Thiago Silva apparently needs a gun to stop him.

messi

Good news for Thiago Silva, Messi is afraid of Guns.

Having said that, expect Angel Dimaria to power the front line with his vision, speed, dribbling. He is one very under-rated player and a wonderful asset to the team.

With a preferred formation of 4-3-3, Argentines are going to heavily rely heavily on Pace and Skill from all directions with Messi upfront well supported alongside by Gonzalo Higuain as well as Sergio Aguero. Having DiMaria play behind the forwards, generating those pace driven runs and cutting past defenders, expect a lot of feed from this guy alone to the forwards upfront. The midfield and defense is very tightly coupled by Mascherano, showing how crucial he is to the team’s game, with the morale completely dependent on him. The two young centre backs look favourites to start but the World Cup being that important will maybe prompt Alejandro to put in Demichelis instead, to provide the team with some experience. Romero is certainly the obvious choice to stay between the bars, he provides the team with vigour as well as experience at the same time.

Although If situation permits, the Argentines might even change formation to a very attacking 3-1-6, Mascherano playing the pivotal holding midfielder and likes of Lavezzi , Gago , Perez joining the other forwards up ahead. They really do look interesting and aggressive this way.

Di Maria – It’s not all about Messi.

Well not much can be said about these, except that they do not belong to the Khaleesi. (Spoiler alert Game of Thrones fans).

Bosnia are the only debutant team in this World Cup. A decent squad , not many known players apart from Edin Dzeko and Pjanic. Very Very attack minded, however commit too much and get hurt defensively.

susic

Apparently a rare Safet Susic collectible card.

Manager : Safet Susic

He was voted as the best Paris Saint Germain player of all time, Yugoslavian by descent and has done a fine job with the Bosnian team, leading them to their first ever World Cup.

Team & Tactics

Well, they are supposed to be an all attacking team, with two strikers upfront. They have a few stars in the two forwards Edin Dzeko and Ibisevic, Roma midfielder Pjanic as well.

They look to be a set of young and attack-minded players looking to up the anti in the group. Their trump card is Edin Dzeko who has looked in great form this year replacing the injured Aguero and help Man City win the League.

Being the really attack-minded team they are, they deploy a fancy 4-3-1-2 formation, spear headed by star Edin Dzeko along side Ibisevic. Interestingly, the striker-pair have been really excellent in the qualifiers and also one of the most successful partnership that we have seen in the qualifiers till now. With the wonderful skill and control of Pjanic in midfield, we most certainly are in for a goal flurry when these guys are involved.

Iran managed to get a coach, who managed Real Madrid at one point. Queiroz, being an ex Madrid coach , has failed to impress with the Iranian team however he might have just enough to cause a few upsets.

Team & Tactics

They definitely do not have any star players, however they have higher stage players like Ashkan Dejagah down the Flanks to provide some quality attack. However they are inexperienced as well as lack quality talent wise. There is Ghoochannejhad who is a young and promising striker from Charlton Athletic, who caught his fans by surprise for sure.

Deploying a standard Premier League formation of 4-2-3-1, it surely looks like they want to get the ball to the young and pacey striker in form. With Dejagah also added to the squad, it might not be that boring with these guys involved after all.

I did say there is not much to this group apart from Argentina but then Nigeria has always been this really sporty and give it everything kind of team, similar to most African teams. (I am not being racist, I am praising them!)

They do start as underdogs and not many predict them winning the World Cup or going too far into the knock-out stages, however they always have some element of surprise.

They surely are the dark horse of the tournament (NO I am not being Racist , again.) and are bound to surprise us with immense work rates, dedication and sportsmanship.

Manager : Stephen Keshi

A very high spirited Stephen Keshi, seems to be either shouting or dancing.

A very high spirited Stephen Keshi, seems to be either shouting or dancing.

Not a very famous lad , however if you are a Nigerian then you’d know that he led the Nigerian team to African Cup of Nations’ victory and also their first World Cup qualification. He aint that bad as a coach too, bagging the African coach of the year award.

Team & Tactics

John Obi Mikel. Okay now that I have mentioned his name, let’s get to the team. These guys are known to be pacey and strong and have extraordinary work rates. With likes of Odemwengie and others like Victor Moses, Nigeria are certain to cause at least 1 or 2 upsets. John Obi Mikel ( There, I did it Again).

Getting to the star player, well it’s pretty obvious who it is according to me, John OBI Mikel. What is the big deal? He is a boring defensive Chelsea midfielder? I have one question to all those, have you seen him play for Nigeria?! Omg. He plays an attacking midfielder, Yes Attacking and Mikel.. In the same sentence ! There is clear passion and skill seen in this guy once he represent his country and actually scores for them too. Moses, Mikel, Odemwingie, Ameobi and the others are certainly out there to make a statement.

Also operating in a 4-3-3 formation, Nigeria is definitely reliant on width and pace offered by their flanks as well as holding possession midfield and relentless through balls forward. Mikel is known to be the centre of their gameplay and will be key to bringing the team together. They might have a weak defensive line-up, but their work rates and physical strength are certainly a force to deal with and compensates the defense. Another important thing about Nigeria is their attitude, how dedicated they are and how they don’t let anything get to them. This will certainly boost the teams performance on any day.

OUTLOOK

It has been a good, long and yet a tiring wait of 4 years after the previous World Cup in South Africa. With the next edition starting in Brazil in less than 24 hours, I bring to you an overall review of the group and my predictions for Group E. It is going to be a rather one sided show by France and might very well top the group. For the second spot, it’s going to be a fight between Switzerland and Ecuador. I’d side towards Switzerland given their solid defense and very young and passionate front line in the form of Shaqiri, Seferovic and Granit Xhaka. Honduras who are hunting for their maiden World Cup victory would be looking forward to achieve it and might as well find it if they get their focus on the Ecuador game. With no further ado, let us jump into the team tactics and predicted starting XI of all the 4 teams in Group E.

Nickname : Nati (The National Team)

FIFA Ranking : 6

Manager : Ottmar Hitzfeld

Team & TacticsSwitzerland-Squad-2014-World-Cup

Switzerland being coached by the ex Bayern boss, der General, Ottmar Hitzfeld, have a very formidable defence. They have very agile wingers on both the flanks. Switzerland often maintain a very compact defence with both the wingers tracking back to help the defence and midfield. ‘Gott’mar Hitzfeld (Gott – God) likes to play the 4-2-3-1 formation with wingers tracking back.

The Rossocrociati are likely to field the defensive duo of the experienced Steve Von Bergen and the Arsenal turned Hamburger defender, Johan Djorou. The Juventus right-back Lichtsteiner and Wolfsburg left back Ricardo Rodriguez are expected to hold a tight and compact line at the back with wingers tracking back and bursting on the counter during attacks.

This resilient defence will be shielded by the Napoli duo Inler and Behrami. With Dzemaili, again from Napoli, on the bench, they have the depth required in case of an unexpected setback, which are being witnessed quite frequently in the footballing world these days.

Xherdan Shaqiri is the man who would be making most of the attacking for the Schweizer Nati. He is more of a Robben-esque player who loves to take on defenders from the right can cut in to unleash a powerful shot with his left foot. Granit Xhaka, the Borussia Monchenglad’bach talisman is the young player to watch out for in the strong Swiss squad. He is going to start as a second striker or a typical CAM. With Valentin Stocker, occupying the left flank and Real Sociedad striker Haris Seferovic playing as the #9, the Switzerland team looks complete and are very well on track to go further on the group stage. Although, Ecuador might just make it so the Switzerland have got to be vigilant.

Their victory over Uruguay in the qualification stage helped them secure the World Cup spot. Their home form has been particularly impressive in the group stage. However, that is very little relevant to the Brazilian conditions.

They play a very fast paced game through the flanks with the Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia doing most of the work. They have a very fragile defensive wall and no proper central midfielders to orchestrate the play and hence their game mostly revolves around crossing the ball into the penalty area. They are expected to employ a 4-1-4-1 formation with two pacy wingers down both the flanks.

Valencia would be key to their hopes of qualifying into the knockout stage. His inconsistency in the past season in English Premier League would be a concern. Nevertheless, belief and confidence in oneself can always help you achieve the unexpected.

FRANCE

Nickname : Les Blues (The Blues)

Team & TacticsFrance

The bleak and dreary World Cup story of France continues. They qualified from the only 5 team group in the qualifying round with just one loss to Spain. After a rather unsound exit from the 2010 World Cup and the sacking of their head coach, Raymond Domenech. Ever since Didier Deschamps has taken charge of the French team, he has employed 4-3-3 which was custom made for athletic players. Too add to a brilliant tactian in the form of Deschamps in their arsenal, they have got a plethora of talented youth who have been featuring regularly in the Top-5 European leagues.

My personal observation of this French team is that, when they get going they are ruthless. But, there are often certain periods of time where they tend of lose concentration with wayward passing and often they need to maintain harmony in their movements and runs. They need to be very aware of the exact position of every player all the time which would help them make proper decisions on the field. They have got a pretty easy group to qualify from. But, what needs to be seen is whether they step on the gas and make this count because when they do step on the gas, they might do what they did against Jamaica in the friendly.

However, the loss of their main player Franck Ribery would upset their chances at hitting gold but they go have a very good cover for the left forward position in the form of the Real Sociedad winger, Antoine Griezmann. He has been in exceptional form over the last season for La Real and this would be a perfect platform to mark his potential and raise his value in the transfer market.

The expected starting XI would be the CB pairing of the two young CBs who have proven their potential in top clubs, Laurent Koscielny and the Real Madrid starlet, Raphael Varane. Digne and Debuchy, as fullbacks would be looking forward to put in crosses and make overlapping runs far wide. We might see a midfield trio of Matuidi, Cabaye and Pogba. Matuidi is the man you are looking for, in case of any fantasy dilemma in the midfield. Griezmann filling in the shoes of Ribery would occupy the left flank with the Marseille midfielder Valbuena on the right and Karim Benzema occupy the #9 role. We might also see Deschamps going with two forwards against Switzerland which hold a very tight defensive line at the back in which case Giroud would take the position of Valbuena.

In conclusion, for France to be one of the contenders for the title, they need to work more as a team and bring in the harmony and more fluidity. However, I don’t see them struggling in the group stages. A Quarterfinal position would be my prediction. Anything above, would only be possible by trying to get into the gear and make the most out of their talent.

Team & TacticsHonduras-XI

Honduras qualified for Brazil with relative ease. They finished third in the CONCACAF group standings, leaving Mexico and Panama to battle it out for the final spot. They have drawn 3 matches and lost 3 matches of their last 6 World Cup outings and would be keen on changing that.

Honduras has the Premier League duo, Wilson Palacios and Maynor Figueroa and would be counting on their experience to get the victory they are craving. Celtic left-back Emilio Izaguirre is arguably the best player of Honduras. His speed and agility on the left flank would be helpful for the team. It would be tough to crack the pretty obdurate defence of Switzerland and France. They best bet at the victory would be against Ecuador.

Wilson Palacios has seen good times in the Premier league under the new boss Mark Hughes after a pretty rough patch at the Britannia Stadium. He is a ferocious atheletes and despite his poor run of form in the Premier League, he would remain the heart of the midfield for Honduras. Los Catrachos need some massive defensive performances from him and Figueroa if they are to pick up that elusive maiden World Cup win.

Given their day, Honduras could well be celebrating their first ever World Cup win.The people of Honduras would surely settle for that first ever victory. Anything surpassing that would be a massive surprise.

After a dream run in the last World Cup where they finished 4th, Uruguay went on to win the Copa America in 2011. So, for a World Cup happening in South America, the continental champions will believe they can go all the way. Although they had an disappointing qualifying campaign where they had to wait for an intercontinental play off win to guarantee their spot in the World Cup, Uruguay will be a very difficult team to beat. Its obvious, just look at their strikers!

Manager : Oscar Tabarez

A veteran of the game, having begun management 34 years ago. With experience plenty of clubs in both South America and Uruguay, Tabarez will not find experience lacking. He has already managed Uruguay in World Cups twice before (1990 and 2010), the first of which they managed to reach the Round of 16 and the second of which, they memorably reached the semifinals.

Team & Tactics

The Uruguayan defence is headed by someone who for me, has to be in the team of the season. Diego Godin, has had the season of his life at Atletico Madrid. Rock solid at the back, powerful aerial presence and a potential goal threat during set pieces, Godin will be a key player in Uruguay’s success. He will be playing alongside veteran Lugano and Portugal based duo Pereira and Fucile should expect to make the start at fullback positions.

Godin - Tackling Tough

Godin – Tackling Tough

The Uruguayan midfield is their weakness. Lacking big names, the midfield will be under a lot of pressure especially since their group mates England and Italy have a pretty strong midfield. I expect La Liga winner Christian Rodriguez and Napoli’s Gargano and Southampton’s Gaston Ramirez to be the leaders from midfield.

I doubt many will disagree when I say, Uruguay is all about its strikers. The front pair of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani is about frightening as it can get. The former, coming off a multiple-award winning campaign in England, is one of the best in the business today. He is good with both feet, his head, his hand (Ask Ghana), his teeth (Ask Ivanovic) and pretty much every other part of his body (Ask his wife)! His counterpart, Cavani has one of the best work rates I’ve ever seen in a footballer. You’d find him fighting for the ball, covering in defence, everywhere! The key for Uruguay would be for these two to combine well. Veteran forward and last time’s hero and Golden Ball winner, Diego Forlan is also selected and although he may be well past his prime, he can offer his valuable experience when called upon in attack.

  COSTA RICA

Nickname : Los Ticos

FIFA Ranking : 28

When the FIFA World Cup 2014 Group Stage Draw happened in December last year, no country would have felt more devastated that Costa Rica. Drawn against 3 heavyweights, nobody in their sane minds would expect Costa Rica to get even a single point, let alone qualify. But with everyone focusing on the 3-way battle in the group and assuming Costa Rica to be pushed aside brutally, they have absolutely nothing to lose. An upset from them can make Group D even more interesting (as if it isn’t already!).

Manager : Jorge Luis Pinto

The Colombian has a wealth of experience in management, especially in South America. Although the task ahead of him is a teeny bit difficult, he will know what to expect. Having managed a number of clubs and a couple of national teams, experience is at plenty.

Team

God is cruel. If the Draw wasn’t punishment enough for the Costa Ricans, they also lost two of their best players to injury. Striker Alvaro Saborio and defender Bryan Oviedo both miss out as Costa Rica are losing the last rays of hope. Fans will look to captain Bryan Ruiz, who has enjoyed impressive spells in the Premier League with Fulham, to steer their team’s charge from midfield. Also up front, they will have Arsenal youngster Joel Campbell, who is a promising talent and fans will hope he will justify Arsenal signing him.

ENGLAND

Nickname : The Three Lions

FIFA Ranking : 10

Squad filled with outstanding individual players – One of the best teams on paper – Huge Expectations – Scrape through the Group Stages – Lose in the early knockout stages (mostly on penalties) – Nationwide disappointment.

This is England’s World Cup story. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It just goes to prove that it’s not individuals that win it, but the team. England as a team, well, they suck. I’m an England fan and it has been frustrating! This time out, they find themselves in arguably the toughest group they’ve ever been in. With a mountain of pressure and expectation on their shoulders, the young English squad is in for a real test. Let’s see how they’ve lined up and what to expect.

Manager :  Roy Hodgson

No World Cup winning team in history has had a manager from a different country. In fact, none of the big teams ever appoint foreign managers. But none of that applies to England, apparently. The Three Lions have gone to the last 3 World Cups with a foreign guy at the helm – Swede Sven Goran Eriksson in 2002 and 2006 and Italian Fabio Capello (who doesn’t even speak English!) in 2010. Why is the English FA doing this? Do they not have faith in any of the English managers? Or were they desperately trying to put an end to that first statistic? Anyways, they finally seem to have come to their senses and after 16 years, England will be going to Brazil with an Englishman as the boss, namely Roy Hodgson. Having managed a total of 16 teams in 8 countries, Uncle Roy is a seasoned veteran of the game. Having guided Switzerland to the second round at the 1994 World Cup, Hodgson will know what to expect in a tournament of this scale. Go Roy!

Team & Tactics

Age is just a number. If a 17-year kid (Pele, 1958) can inspire a World Cup win, anything is possible. Which is why Hodgson has taken the pretty bold move of selecting a very young English squad for the trip to Brazil. 10 players in the 23-man squad are below 24, with the likes of Luke Shaw, Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all showing us the amount of young talent in the Premier League. Each one coming off a great season, the kids will be in for a maturity check at the World Cup.

With the snub of veteran defender Ashley Cole, we can now say that an era has come to an end in the English defence. Stalwarts John Terry and Rio Ferdinand have all retired in recent times and thus, we see a new look at the back. At left back, Leighton Baines will play a key role in attack, bombarding down the flanks putting in those trademark crosses of his. His right side counterpart, Glen Johnson, will look to provide the same at the opposite wing with his runs into the middle. These fullbacks can afford to assist the attack because they are covered at the back with two solid center halves. Gary Cahill, who has emerged as one of the best defenders in the world, is being called the perfect heir to John Terry for both club and country. Along with him, stands Phil Jagielka who has a wealth of experience in the Premier League. Together, the pair will need to be at their very best to keep out the likes of Luis Suarez and Mario Balotelli. All in all, it looks like a solid back four.

Cahill - Rock Solid

Cahill – Rock Solid

The defence will be screened by captain and talisman Steven Gerrard, who at 34, has adapted brilliantly to a much deeper role at Liverpool. Long ball and dead ball speacialist, Gerrard will be the link between defence and attack. England fans just have to hope that he doesn’t ‘slip’ up!

Ahead of Gerrard and behind the two strikers, there are 3 positions to fill and a host of stars competing for them. None of the 9 players vying for these positions could be guaranteed a start. For me personally, I think it will be Jack Wilshere, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling. Wilshere, although coming off a recent injury, has been impressive in the friendlies and is known for his quick feet and excellent ball control in central midfield. Adam Lallana has been the revelation of this Premier League season. His mazy runs and brilliant passing has been vital to Southampton’s rise this season. And teenager Raheem Sterling will complete the midfield after a scintilating season for Liverpool, especially in the second half of the campaign. With speedster Theo Walcott ruled out, Sterling will be the one providing the much required pace and creativity to the English attack. You’d wonder how someone so young could play with such maturity, but then this is a guy with 2 wives and 3 kids! Other players like youngsters Barkley and Oxlade-Chamberlain will also hope to impress Hodgson and crawl their way into the starting lineup.

Up front, will be the duo of Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge. The former, widely regarded as one of the best forwards in the game, has been a juicy target for critics with a string of below par performaces at national level, especially in the previous 2 World Cups. But then, which England player has ever had a good World Cup in recent years? Rooney still hasn’t opened his account and will look to silence all the critics that in Brazil. Daniel Sturridge is just coming off a brilliant season with Liverpool ending the season as second highest scorer behind own teammate and to-be opponent Luis Suarez. England will look to him to provide the finishing touches.

Their weakness?

That bloody left wing! For decades now, England has suffered dearly from being without a quality left sided winger. The age old lament of English fans “If only Ryan Giggs was English” has not quite vanished, but just taken a new form with Giggsy’s name replaced by a certain Gareth Bale. Many great players have found themselves shockingly deployed on the left wing. Seeing Paul Scholes (2002) and Steven Gerrard (2010) playing in the wings is heartbreaking for Premier League fans. Who will be the next victim? Rumours suggest Wayne Rooney might be the unfortunate soul, but I personally would assign Adam Lallana to the left side so that he cut inside too to allow Baines to charge and whip in a few crosses.

ITALY

Nickname : Azzurri (The Blues)

FIFA Ranking : 9

Four-time champions Italy head into Brazil knowing they have a chance to go level with the hosts for the most World Cup wins. After a horrible tournament in South Africa 2010 where they got knocked out in the group stages by the likes of Paraguay and Slovakia, the Azzuri have been on the rise since. They reached the final of Euro 2012 (where they got thrashed 4-0 by Spain though!) and had a strong qualifying campaign, being one of the first teams from Europe to qualify. Drawn into the ‘Group of Death’, they face a tough task ahead. Let’s see what they have to offer.

Manager : Cesare Prandelli

Appointed after 2006 World Cup winning coach, Marcelo Lippi was sacked after a dismal performance in South Africa 2010, Prandelli has gone on to revitalize the national team in a way which has started to make people believe that Italy can play attractive football again and not be ‘Defensive and Boring’. A 2nd place at the Euros and a 3rd place in the Confederations Cup are all signs of the magnificient work Prandelli has put in.

Team & Tactics

He’s still got it! Gianluigi Buffon, at 36, is still considered one of the best goalkeepers in the game. The Juventus stopper is in line to be only the 3rd player to be part of 5 World Cups, having made his debut in 1998. The Azzuri captain will need to be at his vintage best to progress from this group.

In front of him, lie familiar faces. Buffon’s clubmates Chiellini and Barzagli stand tall in the heart of the defence with youngsters Abate and De Sciglio on either side. Italy are also known to shift into the unconventional 3-defender formation with Bonucci also joining the centre backs thus completing a full Juventus backline.

After losing influential midfielder Ricardo Montolivo to injury a week ago in the friendly against Ireland (bloody drunk Irishmen!), Prandelli has had to rethink his midfield strategy. Daniele De Rossi should start in defensive midfield with Juventus midfielders Marchisio and the ever-so-elegant L’Architetto (The Architect), Andrea Pirlo pulling the strings in midfield. Pirlo at 35, remains Italy’s most influential player and is continuing to prove that age doesn’t matter. Other midfielders who will look to make the starting eleven will be PSG duo Motta and the new wonderkid, Marco Verratti, whose performances at club level have certainly caught an eye or two.

Balotelli - Even God doesn't know what he's thinking.

Balotelli – Even God doesn’t know what he’s thinking.

Up front will be the controversial Mario Balotelli, who is probably the most unpredictable players in the world today. One day, he may score a brilliant goal and win them the game and on another day, he may get in a fight and get sent off and lose the game for them. He is a risk and Prandelli knows it, but he is his own protege, and will attempt to tame the hothead. Along with Balotelli, Serie A top scorer Ciro Immobile will look to start. His name can be pretty misleading as he is nothing but immobile. Getting into the right positions, he can get the Azzuri the goals they need, especially after a brilliant hat-trick in one of the warm up games. Completing the attack will be the youngster Insigne, who can take a run or two at the opposition with his speed and creativity. He is also a free kick specialist, but I feel sorry for the kid. With Pirlo there, he can forget about scoring off the dead ball.

GROUP PREDICTIONS

I predict England and Uruguay to qualify from the groups in that very order. The Italians have been poor in recent warm up games and with their best 2 players at 35 and 36, they will fall short. Costa Rica, well, I pity them.

OUTLOOK

Most fans would consider this to be the most boring group of the lot. But we know better, don’t we? Looking over at each of the teams, we can easily consider this to be the most unpredictable. All though they have never played each other in the previous editions, none of them can afford to be complacent. With the likes of Didier Drogba, Shinji Kagawa, James Rodriguez and more, we can expect explosive play.

Lets take a look at how each of these teams have shaped up, with analysis strengths, weaknesses and whom to watch out for.

colombia

COLOMBIA

Nickname : Los Cafeteros (The Coffee Growers)

FIFA Ranking : 8

Not having much success in the previous editions of the world cup, they were considered to have the best team they have ever produced yet. Having a strong attack, most fans considered them to top the league., beating Uruguay 4-0 and Chile 3-1 in the qualification round. Will the Coffees live up?

Manager : José Pékerman

He might not be famous but he knows his stuff. Having coached Argentina youth to  victory in the FIFA World youth championship 3 times, he knows what the situation demands and what can be expected and hence bringing the attacking style instead of the defensive style they have had been following. Having coached his entire life in the South American continent can come to their advantage. But having no practical experience outside might cost them dearly.

Formation :col

Generally playing a 5-3-2 or a 4-2-2-2 formation, they push their full backs ahead, while their wingers often come in running  when in possession. They often find themselves out of their position and prone to counter attacks, but when they have the ball they are a joy to watch.

Team :

Their goalkeeper Ospina along with the defence line seems  moderately-stable, considering the Milan duo of Zapata and Yepes. Yet their age is against them, lacking the reactions required or their fading strength. Armero and Zuniga provide the width and the push as full-backs but often go out of position. Krimen has to make sure they don’t give out too much space.

The midfield in the center is, although experienced internationally, but lacks the flair required at the level they are playing in even with the Internazniole midfielder Guarin playing center. It is very well compensated by the amazing wing force of Cuadrado and Rodriguez who love to throw and run balls in. The wingers with their speed and agility are the strong part of the midfield.

They must be clearly feeling the loss of Falcao, their star striker. But all is not over! With Jackson Martinez having a terrific time at Porto, he now has to step up to meet the odds. He would be assisted by Gutierez, though we would like to see the new Borrusia Dortmund signing Adrian Ramos show his skill.

Young Players to look out for :

Santiago Arias, Eder Alvarez Balanta.

GREECE

Nickname : To Piratiko (The Pirate Ship)

FIFA Ranking : 12

The 2004 Euro cup winners have long lost their shine in the international arena. But that doesn’t make them any less easier in the group. While their nation suffers under a financial crisis, the team is known to play united, fighting against the odds. Will their spirits be enough for them to see the group through?

Manager : Fernando Santos

Do not make the mistake of him being a Portuguese fool you. His knowledge of Greek football is profound and well, the reason why the club has consistently been holding its FIFA rank 10 until a few weeks ago. He specializes in tactical play rather than building the team around a single player. He is a manager of discipline and prefers his team to stay so. Statistics do add up. Least goals conceded in qualifications, none on home soil.

Fun Fact: He is an Electrical and Telecommunication Engineer!

Formation :gre

They play a 4-4-2 diamond style formation. The back four rarely contribute to the attack, while the diamond midfield formation ensures that there is minimum gap between the defenders and the midfield, leading to a transition-less pass play. The flair of the midfield might see them through to the attacking half, playing almost completely through the center of the pitch.

The Team :

The strongest defense in the group, not by name but by play. Their whole game-play starts slowly from the defense and builds itself up, while the defensive 4 stand like a rock, not giving away position to get flanked or penetrated through by a fast through ball or a target-man cross.  Manolas and Sokratis might be their armour this time, having showed good form in their pre-matches.

The flair in the midfield sure exists. Karagounis plays as the center of the play whereas the winger pair of Samaras and Salpingidis often find themselves in the receiving end of the through balls and come towards the inside to pass the ball to the strikers or cross it in to Mitroglou. When Katsouranis runs ahead to support the striker, Either of Karagounis or Tziolis fall back to take his position so as to prevent a counter.

The attackers are quite interwoven with the mid-fielders as they often come deep to assist as well as add an offensive play to the midfield pass-play. On paper, this might be the weakest attack of the lot.

The team might not seem very impressive but their unity play-“play as one, attack as one” formula has seen them do wonders. Their never say die attitude is what kept them at where they are now and might act as the catalyst to them clearing the group!

CÔTE D’IVOIRE (Ivory Coast)

Nickname : Les Éléphants (The Elephants)

FIFA Ranking : 23

The aging but star studded side of Côte d’Ivoire can upset quite a few this time around. Weather not being a problem for this team, they topped their qualifying group easily. Their strong attack and midfield might just be too much for some teams to handle.

Manager: Sabri Lamouchi

Almost the African version of Pep Guardiola, he plays with the sophistication in his tactics which we don’t generally see. He was chosen to replace Francois Zahui 5 days before the first qualifier. It would be interesting to see him play out his team, as he is facing criticism and might be fired if they don’t make it through to the next round.

Formation:civ

They play a 4-3-3 formation, where in the central striker position is very well reserved for Drogba. The 2 mid-fielders with the vision of the in-form captain Yaya Toure and the Newcastle Midfielder Tiote provide balls to the wings were in the pair of Solomon Kalou and the rejuvenated Gervinho(Yes, him) play the dangerous attack they always have had. They generally play either way, that is through the center and the wings, but their flank play pays them better results.

Team:

The defence is the shaky part of the elephants. Their goalkeeper Boubacar Barry isn’t one of the best around. And just look at the defence. Kolo Toure, long past his prime, Zokora has to manage the defense himself. He has been consistent, but has been known to move away from position. Similar is the case with Arthur Boka, though Aurier might provide the much needed energy in the aging defence.

The midfield in the center is the star of this team. Yaya Toure will be the  play-maker of the team.Considering his form, there’s no doubt the team will be built about his a-la-carte choices of passing. Along with Gervinho who has been playing good ever since in Roma and  Kalou out wide. If they play their tactics well, Yaya can run through brilliant balls to his faster team-mates.

The attack is maybe their strongest part with the old but gold Drogba and Wilfred Bony. Both of them, known for their sheer physicality can beat through the defenses, if only slightly faster. Without the obvious incoming through balls from the midfield though, their attack would be rather dull, a point which opponents would obviously look out for

JAPAN

Nickname : Blue Samurai

FIFA Ranking : 46

The Japanese have been considered the strongest team from Asia this time. They have only been growing stronger and fans consider them having a possibility of reaching quarters, atleast. Let’s see if they can stand up to their fans’ claims?

Manager: Alberto Zaccheroni

The Italian was brought in to replace Takeshi Okada, maybe to change the held back approach the latter used.  Alberto identified the strength of the team in its fluidic midfield and sought to improve it, creating a new set which took European clubs by a wave. His attacking play is considered his stronghold and might create tensions for older defenses.

Formation:jap

They play a 4-2-3-1/3-4-3 formation, Kaysuke Honda taking the single striker, often lying deep. The 2 midfielders along with Honda hold the ball till the explosive fullback pair of Nagatomo and.Uchida run to put the ball in. Also, the midfield pair has enough talent themselves to make a path through most defenses, if not all.

Team:

The defence, like almost every other team in the group is the weak link for the samurais. The full-backs often run farther ahead to contribute to the attack. This leaves them prone to counters considering either fullback don’t trackback much. The center backs are not the best of the lot. The team has done extremely well when on the opponent half of the field, but under pressure  shatters like glass.

The midfield is fluidic and fast. They play a passing and through ball game, but also push the balls to the wings for the fullbacks to take over when countering. Kagawa, Honda and Okasaki play the triangular style short passing. They are the driving force in the team keeping the ball in the offensive half. Kagawa would be the decisive member of this Japanese team. His ‘false-9’ movement might create some spaces which can be utilized very well, while drifting to the wings if and when required.

Their attack is based solely around Honda who often breaks through the offside trap to find himself in clear positions for crosses. As a target man, he is real good at his job and has found the net several times for his club.Even so, Osako plays as the main striker and often pushes himself ahead when Honda drops himself back.

GROUP B – Repeat Of The Final

GROUP B

Spain

Netherlands

Chile

Australia

OVERVIEW

Group B features a repeat performance of last time’s final with Spain and the Netherlands meeting each other a lot earlier than they would’ve imagined. The group is completed by Chile and Australia. The Spaniards boast one of the strongest squads in the tournament and are clear favorites to brush aside the rest in gaining top spot. The Dutch, with a squad not as imposing as last time, still are second favorites to qualify. The Chileans, who will have home continent advantage, will be a difficult team to crack open. An upset is very much on the cards. And finally, Australia, are in for trouble. The Down Under men are going just there. Down Under.

So, the top spots will be up for grabs as we could expect Group B to be one of the groups of the tournament.  Lets get into Team Analysis.

spain

SPAIN

Nickname : La Furia Roja (The Red Fury)

FIFA Ranking : 1

Manager : Vicente Del Bosque

Squad and Formation

Predicted Formation: 4-3-3

Predicted Starting Line Up:

spain formationThe defending champions boast of a squad the depth of which simply cannot be matched in international football today. Their bench comprises of footballers of the highest pedigree who would stroll into the starting eleven of almost any squad in the world, presumably with a cigar on the lips and a glass of cognac in hand. To see the likes of Juan Mata, Javi Martinez, Cesc Fabregas, to name a few, on the bench is heart breaking at times. But their absence from the starting eleven speaks volumes of the options that Manager Vicente del Bosque has at his disposal. And this bodes well for La Roja.
With the revival of Gerard Pique, the continued aggressive excellence of Sergio Ramos, and the tactical intelligence of Javi Martinez, Spain is well stocked up in defence, to say the absolute least. And even if you get past the two central defenders, I do not envy the attacker attempting to get that ball past Iker Casillas. Especially if Sara Carbonero rewards a clean sheet with something the rest of us can only dream of (something the rest of us DO dream of).

With such a strong safety net to fall back on, the fullback pair of Jordi Alba (Speedy Gonzales reincarnated) and the more conservative Juanfran, who has edged ahead of Cesar Azpilicueta, can afford to maraud the wings and provide more than able support to the Spanish wide men.

In the midfield, the Barcelona pair of Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets should start alongside Madrid man Xabi Alonso. Vicente del Bosque could not have hoped for a better screen ahead of his defense than Sergio Busquets who also has the ability to entertain with his theatrics as an added bonus.

busquets

We’re watching you, Sergio!

Xavi and Xabi shall be dictating play and pumping those balls all around the field as they are accustomed to. There are talks of the Heir Apparent Koke replacing The Maestro Xavi. However, I do not see that happening in Brazil. Xavi Hernandez is unmatched. Period.

The Spanish wide men shall be Andres Iniesta and David Silva neither being conventional wide men. Del Bosque has displayed an unwillingness to field conventional wingers with Jesus Navas failing to make the cut despite a brilliant season with Manchester City and Pedro not being deployed effectively enough. I believe that much of the wing play will be conducted by the full backs. Iniesta and Silva are the finest playmakers in world football at the moment and they shall have free license to link the striker up front with the midfield trio.

Up front, there really is one option. In fielding the burly Diego Costa, del Bosque has shown a willingness to depart from tradition and use a true striker instead of the ‘False 9’ the Spaniards seem so attached to. Rest assured, Spain shall be more potent in front of goal than what observers have been accustomed to.

Iniesta – Will heroics repeat itself?

Tactics

To watch the Spanish play football is to witness sheer poetry of motion when they are at their best. Being an advocate of Possession Football as practiced and preached by His Holiness The Johann of Cruyff, I admire the shrewdness which Wily Ol’ Bosque has exhibited by adopting the ‘Barcelona System’ thus far. Suffocating opponents by controlling the ball, unmatched distribution and work rate, the high defensive line, hunting in packs. These ideologies have been successfully incorporated into the Spain set up to great effect as is reflected in the recent, well documented additions in Spain’s erstwhile dust covered (almost Arsenal like) trophy cabinet. However, the Barcelona Star is waning and hence, it is my belief that Spain is a team in transition. They are adopting a more direct approach from what can be observed by analyzing their pre-World Cup friendlies. In doing so del Bosque is attempting to fully utilize the considerable skills of one Diego Costa who has thrived in the Athletico Madrid design (kudos Mr. Simeone!). In Diego, del Bosque has a true striker, a ‘True No. 9’, someone who is guaranteed to give him goals if deployed correctly. Diego Costa shall add a new dimension to the Spain set up with his physicality and his clinical finishing. With Andres Iniesta and David Silva tasked with feeding the striker, and Jordi Alba and Juanfran pumping balls in from the wings, he shall get opportunities aplenty.

Tactically speaking, the key point in determining how well Spain do shall be how effectively the midfielders can synchronize. Spain set up their midfield in multi dimensional layers. Busquets takes up the screen in front of the defense with Alonso also lending a hand. Xavi and Xabi Alonso shall attempt to orchestrate play with the former being more attack minded. Andres Iniesta and David Silva shall roam around the entire field looking for the perfect opportunity to play the killer ball in. How effectively the cogs in the midfield engine play their part shall go a long way in determining Spain’s success in Brazil this summer.

Predictions & Key Points

Spain should breeze through to the Knock Out stage and may well make it all the way. However, the aforementioned transition is not yet complete and this may result in failure to retain the World Cup.

A key point in analyzing the effectiveness with which the Spanish way of football is incorporated on the field is how well they adapt to the climatic conditions in Brazil. In the Confederations Cup last summer, Spain failed to adapt and their workrate and pressing were severely compromised. Lets hope the Spanish acclimatize and we get to witness the undeniable mellifluous beauty of Spanish football.

netherlands

NETHERLANDS

Nickname : Oranje (The Orange)

FIFA Ranking : 15

Manager : Louis van Gaal

Squad and Formation:dutch

Predicted Formation: 5-3-2/3-5-2
Predicted starting lineup:

What the Dutch squad lacks in maturity in defence, they make up for in attacking quality in terms of overall squad strength. The attacking trio of Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie up front shall be able to find their way through the meanest of defences, especially when being instructed by the Czar of Alkmaar, Louis van Gaal.

Behind the front three, Nigel de Jong should feature alongside Jordy Clasie. In the absence of star man Kevin Strootman, the pair should provide adequate cover and effectively screen the defence.

With the two-man holding midfield, the wing backs Daryl Janmaat and Daley Blind shall play more like wingers for most of the game. Janmaat in particular will give the opposition plenty of grief.

The main weakness of the Dutch squad is their defence. Promising talents Bruno Martins Indi and Stefan de Vrij may be, but their inexperience shall affect the performance of the team. Ron Vlaar completes the three man defence and is expected to lead and organize the defenders. However, I remain unconvinced with the quality of football that he plays. Jasper Cillessen should make the cut above Michel Vorm and Tim Krul based on his performances for Ajax.

Tactics:

Proving his tactical acumen, Manager Louis van Gaal has modified the 4-3-3 formation which was deployed during qualification because of injury to Superman Kevin Strootman. In the absence of the anchor in midfield and no worthy replacement, van Gaal has revived the 5-3-2 formation with three central defenders and two wingbacks. This has been a tactical masterstroke and may negate the effect of Strootman’s loss.

United target Daryl Janmaat and Daley Blind shall function as midfielders in attack and shall use every opportunity to bomb forward. Thus, in the transition from defence to attack, les Oranje modify their tactical set up into a 3-5-2 formation. In doing so, van Gaal has given Wesley Sneijder the perfect platform to showcase his excellent distribution with multiple options in front. The midfield pair of Nigel de Jong and Jordy Clasie shall be able to marshal the midfield and boss around the opposition giving Sneijder and Arjen Robben the freedom to exhibit their many talents. Robben shall exploit the freedom that he shall be given. He will still have to pass the ball though. Van Gaal runs a tight ship.

Van Gaal - The Chills.

Van Gaal – The Chills.

Sneijder shall serve as an able middleman to link van Persie with the midfield. When match fit, Robin van Persie is arguably the best striker in the world. Taking into account the service he shall be receiving, expect some fireworks from the Dutch!

Robben & RVP - Left Foots to dream for.

Robben & RVP – Left Foots to dream for.

Predictions & Key Points

Netherlands should make it through to the next stage, but will have to work hard competing with Chile. How their hitherto untested defence fares against quality opposition will decide how far along they can make it in the tournament. The acclimatization factor also plays an important role here. If they adapt, they should see off the threat of Chile and qualify for the Knock Outs.

chile

     CHILE

Nickname : La Roja (The Red)

FIFA Ranking : 14

Manager : Jorge Sampaoli

Squad and Formation:chile
Predicted formation: 4-3-1-2
Predicted starting lineup:

Tactics

The South Americans finished third in their qualifying group behind Argentina and Columbia and much of the credit goes to Manager Jorge Sampaoli who follows in the path paved by Marcelo Biesla. To predict the formation and tactics of the manager is no easy feat as Sampaoli has displayed an inclination to tinker based on the opposition. However, a high-tempo, high pressing gameplay is to be expected.

Throughout qualification, Chile have fielded a three-man or a four-man defence. Based on the relative toughness of the group, it is my belief that Sampaoli shall field three men at the back against Australia whereas a four-man defence will be seen against Spain and Netherlands.

The Chilean team is capable of retaining the ball for long periods and the team works extremely hard when the ball is not with them. Although the principles are similar compared to what they were under Biesla, Jorge Sampaoli has taken Chilean football to a whole new level. The front three work extremely hard and hassle the opposition. The focus is on breaking up the opposition’s play early on and depriving them of the opportunity to settle down. However, this tactic requires a high defensive line to prevent spaces in the middle of the field. This can be exploited by quality opposition as the Chilean defenders lack the pace to track back effectively.

The players are very comfortable with the ball at their feet and they are guaranteed to entertain with their quick passing and subtle tactical variations throughout the game. In Arturo Vidal, Chile have the most complete midfielder in the game today and Sampaoli shall effectively utilize him. The absence of Fiorentina forward Matias Fernandez will be felt. However Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas can run any defence ragged with their dribbling abilities and intelligent link up play, and they sure can pop in goals consistently.

Alexis Sanchez - Spearheading the Reds.

Alexis Sanchez – Spearheading the Reds.

Predictions & Key Points :

Having been drawn in a relatively tough group, Chile will have to work their socks off to progress into the next stages. With a weakened Dutch side, qualification for the Chileans certainly is not impossible. Sampaoli will have to get his tactics spot on for them to stand a chance against the 2010 finalists.

The weather conditions shall also play a major part in determining the success of the South Americans. In contrast to the Dutch, they are accustomed to playing in these conditions and this could prove to be the edge that the Chileans needed.

AUSTRALIA

Nickname : Socceroos

FIFA Ranking : 62

Manager : Ange Postecoglou

Squad and Formation:

Predicted formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted lineup:aus

An Outlook

Coach Ange Postecoglou, the first Australian coach of the national team in 10 years, is a pleasant change from the man he replaced at the helm, Holger Osieck who once claimed that ,”women should shut up in public”. The focus is now on football which has reflected in the qualifying campaign of the Aussies. Postecoglou has transformed the Australian squad in a number of aspects. From being the second oldest squad in terms of average age in the 2010 World Cup, the Socceroos are one of the youngest squads in this edition. However, keeping the positives of youthful exuberance aside, Australians are going to crash. In Everton legend Tim Cahill they have a true leader but his young charges are a long way from comparing to the quality that the other teams in their group possess. Apart from the promotion of youth, Postecoglou has also altered the tactical set up of the Aussies. Possession football is now the essence of the Australian football soul with its traces now observable in the oh-so-famous A-League. Brisbane Roar have now been nicknamed ‘Roarcelona’.

The Ram Narayan of the A-League.

The Ram Narayan of the A-League.

All jokes apart, the work put in by Postecoglou is admirable. He is reshaping Australian football culture. The exposure for the young squad in Brazil shall be invaluable for their development. However, being the lowest ranked team participating in the World Cup, the men from Down Under are going to feel at home, Down Under the group table!

GROUP A – All Eyes on the Hosts

Group A

Brazil

Croatia

Mexico

Cameroon

An Outlook

Group A will kick things off at this World Cup, with tournament favorites Brazil taking on the Croats. This promises to be quite an interesting group, because it will give us an idea if Brazil can live up the ‘favorites’ tag. Although the hosts are expected to cruise through, the remaining spot is up for grabs. Croatia look most likely to grab that spot, but its never that easy, isn’t it?

Lets take a look at how each of these teams have shaped up, with analysis strengths, weaknesses and whom to watch out for.

Here’s Team Previews Set 1.

BrazilBRAZIL

Nickname: Seleção (The Selected)

The most successful team in the competition’s history. A country whose history is packed with some of the greatest players ever to have played the game. A team whose style of play is matched by no other. Pace, power, control, elegance, passion – these words epitomize Brazilian football. And this year, they play in their own backyard. Few would argue that they are the team to beat to win this World Cup.

Luiz Felipe Scolari has the World Cup at his feet, with the Brazil manager being at the helm in 2014

Luiz Felipe Scolari – You just don’t want to be at the end of that look.

Manager: Luiz Felipe Scolari

The fiery Brazilian is no stranger to the World Cup. Having already led Brazil to victory in the 2002 World Cup and getting Portugal into the last four at Germany 2006, Scolari boasts a wealth of experience very few can match. Yes, he did suffer The Abramovich Axe at Chelsea, but ‘Big Phil’ is back to his favorite stage, and is ready to face the storm.

Best World Cup Performance

Champions : 5 (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002)
Runners Up : 2 (1950, 1998)

The Team

In my opinion, their greatest asset at this World Cup would be their defence. The center-back combination of Thiago Silva, who for me is the closest anyone is today to being the ideal defender, and David Luiz, the versatile and crazy one, is definitely going to take some magic to beat. Brazil have always been known for their overlapping wing-backs who find themselves largely in the opposition half than their own. In fact, the Brazilians were the ones who brought in the concept of a wing-back. The legendary combination of Carlos and Cafu dangerously charging down the wings at the 2002 World Cup is almost equally replicated now through the Real Madrid-Barcelona duo Marcelo and Alves.

Their midfield for me is their weak link. Brazil employs a 4-3-3 formation with 3 central midfield positions and no orthodox wingers. Among the 7 players chosen by Scolari for these 3 positions, Fernandinho, who won the English Premier League with Manchester City, is the only player to have won a title this season. All the others are coming off largely disappointing seasons. The Chelsea trio of Ramires, Willian and Oscar, although brilliant at times this season, have failed to capture that form consistently. If there’s one area where Brazil could be beat, is in midfield.

As we move to the forwards, there’s that one name that stands out. Brazil’s biggest icon today, the poster boy for the World Cup, Neymar. The Barcelona man is all set to dazzle the world with his exquisite skills and is widely touted to be the star of the tournament. He’s gifted in the art of faking (in all meanings of the word). Along with the powerful duo of Hulk and Fred, Neymar and co are all set to blast their way to glory.

Midfielders: Paulinho (Tottenham Hotspur), Ramires, Willian, Oscar (all Chelsea), Hernanes (Inter Milan), Luiz Gustavo (VfL Wolfsburg), Fernandinho (Manchester City)

Forwards: Bernard (Shakhtar Donetsk), Neymar (Barcelona), Fred (Fluminense), Jo (Atletico Mineiro), Hulk (Zenit St Petersburg).

CroatiaCROATIA

Nickname: Kockasti (The Chequered Ones)

After the huge disappointment of not having qualified for the previous World Cup in 2010, Croatia would be raring to go at this edition. Boasting many big names in the team, they are more than capable of causing an upset or two. They are favorites to qualify from the group behind hosts Brazil.

Niko Kovac – The Newbie.

Manager: Niko Kovac

Just recently retired from his playing career in 2009, Niko Kovac is a total newcomer in the coaching world. He retired as Croatia’s oldest player, having captained them in both the 2006 World Cup and Euro ’08. But, coaching the national side at a World Cup is a huge task. Compared to Big Phil above, Niko is just a kid. Quite a lot of pressure on the chap, but let’s hope he can unleash the ‘ic’s.

Best World Cup Performance

Third Place : 1998

 The Team

There are 10 players in the squad whose names don’t end in ‘ic’. I think that has to be a Croatian record! Anyways, this squad boasts a few big names from some of the biggest clubs in Europe. In my opinion, Croatia’s strongest area is their central midfield, with the magnificent duo of Luka Modric, who is fresh off a Champions League winning campaign, and Ivan Rakitic, who won the Europa League Player of the Tournament during Sevilla’s successful campaign. The former especially, is one of the finest playmakers today and has become a regular fixture in the Real Madrid squad.

Leading the attack is the first choice striker for German giants Bayern Munich for the past couple of years, Mario Mandzukic, who seems to have a head made more of rock than brains. At the back, one of the best signings of this season in the English Premier League, Dejan Lovren of Southampton, sits rock solid, providing the team a good balance. This is a squad that is indeed capable of raising a few eyebrows.

MexicoMEXICO

Nickname: Los Manitos (The Little Hands)

Some say the although Mexico is in North America and not South America, the Mexicans have the touch and talent that is equal of a Brazilian or an Argentinian. Sadly enough, they haven’t been able to prove that much. It will quite be a tough task qualifying from this group, let alone go further. They’ve always been a country with more historical importance than actual performances, like being part of the first ever World Cup match, the first country to host two World Cups etc. Maybe they can turn the tables this time.

Manager: Miguel Herrera

Miguel Herrera

Miguel Herrera

After I read about him, I understood that this is guy who is as Mexican as Mexican goes. Played and managed entirely in the Mexican League for various clubs and here he is, off to Brazil. He has quite a difficult job ahead of him and so, since I don’t know him much, I’ll just say, Good Luck Mr. Herrera!

Best World Cup Performance

Quarter-Finals : 2 (1970, 1986)

The Team

The Mexican squad just has 8 players plying their trade in Europe as Herrera has opted for a largely domestic based squad. So, most of them are unknown to the rest of the world. The key names that stand out are Manchester United’s super sub Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, and former Tottenham and Barcelona forward Giovanni Dos Santos, who will be leading the attack for the Mexicans. Also the presence of veteran defender Rafael Marquez, who boasts a wealth of experience at the highest level will be beneficial to the team’s confidence.

Chicharito will be spearheading the Mexican Wave.

CameroonCAMEROON

Nickname: Lions Indomptables (The Indomitable Lions)

They remain Africa’s most successful team in World Cups, having played in the most tournaments and most matches than any other in the continent. They’ll be perhaps mostly remembered for their exploits at the 1990 World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals with the incensed 38-year old Roger Milla taking the world by shock with both his goals and his dancing. They have been gifted with some of the best talents in Africa over the years and although they’re not among the favorites to qualify from the group, they will definitely have a strong say in who will.

Volker Finke

Volker Finke

Manager: Volker Finke

Finke is a German veteran who has been in management for nearly 40 years now. Although he isn’t that well known, he has huge experience in managing, not just in Germany, but in Asia and now, Africa. His experience will be key as Cameroon hope to mount a surprise charge in Group A.

Best World Cup Performance

Quarter-Finals : 1990

The Team

The Cameroon squad has quite a number of players playing in the top European leagues. One of the big names to look out for is former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea veteran forward, Samuel Eto’o, who is arguably the best African player in the past decade, having won the African Player of the Year Award a record 4 times. He will be out to prove his critic(s) that he is not that old. Another big name is former Arsenal and current Barcelona midfielder Alex Song. With many such talents, Cameroon will hope to lead Africa’s charge in Brazil.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD CUP

World Cup Logo Oh, its back! The biggest and most awaited spectacle in the world is back. The 4 year long and excruciating wait is over. The FIFA World Cup has arrived, bigger than ever, this time, in the place many call ‘The Home of Football’ – Brazil.

A billion dreams to be fulfilled and shattered, hearts to be won and broken, spirits to be raised and dampened. But in the end, only one team can stand above all, look down with a sly smirk and shout at everyone else, “We’ve conquered the world!.” Every person in the world who has ever kicked a football, dreams of that moment. Basking in all that glory, knowing that you can now die in peace, knowing that you have made a mark in history, knowing that you are a hero.

So, let’s look at what’s in store for this wild journey. Let me take you through the reasons why your summer couldn’t be any better. My dear readers- Welcome to the World Cup – where legends are made.

FIVE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CANCEL ALL OTHER PLANS FOR THE SUMMER

  • Most Watched Event In The World

The FIFA World Cup is one of the most watched and followed events in the world. Although only 32 countries actually take part in the tournament, the World Cup is watched in every country that has football fans. Across 7 continents (I bet there’ll be somebody watching it from Antarctica too!), 200+ countries and 20 odd time zones, everything else takes a step back from June 12th 2014. Talk of the World Cup fills homes, schools, colleges, offices, bars, restaurants, parties etc etc. It brings people together and helps you meet new people. With people supporting a variety of teams, a mood of competition arises in every group. You just don’t want to be left out of this spectacle. A billion people cannot be going nuts over nothing, right?

  • BRAZIL – The Home Of Football

They say Brazilians live and breathe football. They have the sport running through their veins. Every kid in Brazil, grows up playing football. It’s part of their culture and a way of life. Not many can match the passion for the game that Brazilians have. Which is exactly why this World Cup will be all the more special. No other country can provide a better atmosphere for the event. Expect fully packed stadiums for every single match, each with an atmosphere better than the other. Fans travelling to Brazil are in for the experience of a lifetime. Everyone across the globe, watching it on their televisions, get ready to feel the electricity through the screens. Be prepared to sit on the edge of your seats and bite your nails for the next month, because football is coming home!

  • Never Too Late To Start

If you don’t know anything about football and you’ve always wanted to, but you just didn’t know where to begin, look no further! There couldn’t be a more perfect time to join the footballing family. I speak from personal experience. In 2006, the only football player I knew was probably David Beckham, and here I am, writing a football blog. What triggered the interest? The World Cup.  It’s never too late to start, whether you’re a boy or a girl, young or old, you’ll never regret it. It’s not that difficult too. With the rise of the internet, almost every bit of information is available online. You couldn’t go more than one minute on your Facebook news feed without finding some friend posting about the World Cup. News, Talks and Gossips of the World Cup is present in newspapers and television channels. So, what are you waiting for? Join the World Cup bandwagon, because it’s going to be one hell of a ride!

  • Follow The Minnows Too

Many people think that the World Cup is worth watching only from the Quarter-Finals or the Semi-Finals. I admit, watching a match like Ecuador vs Iran isn’t exactly appealing at first thought, but I beg to differ. Every team at an event like the World Cup plays with the flair of champions. Even the small teams, even though they don’t have Messis or Ronaldos in the team, play in the highest spirits and will be bursting with confidence. The weight of an entire country’s dreams rests on each of the players’ shoulders at the World Cup. This is the biggest stage in world football and everyone wants to leave a mark on history. Every single one of the 64 matches in this tournament will be worth your time. So, don’t just wait for your favorite teams to play, watch every minute it.

  • The Making Of Legends

You look at history and pick out the best players to have graced the sport in the last century, nearly everyone is remembered for their exploits in World Cups. No-one can ever forget the likes of 17-year old Pele in ’58 and ’70, the speedy squat Maradona in ’86, Beckenbaeur and Cruyff in ’74, Baggio in ’94, Zidane in ’98 and ’06, Ronaldo in ’02 and the list goes on. 20-30 years from now, when people want to look for the legends of the past, they’ll look at this year’s World Cup. With both the best players of today, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, not having made a significant mark on the biggest stage yet, this may well be their year. So I repeat what I said earlier in this post.

Welcome to the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 – Where Legends Are Made.
