Japan’s top 5 Kiki’s Delivery Service moments!

Last weekend Hayao Miyazaki’s 1989 classic Kiki’s Delivery Service was shown on Japanese tv taking a 12.5% share of the tv audience and following the screening the Japanese public could vote for their favourite film moments. Heres what they voted for (which i thought was quite surprising) -

5th place with 73,419 votes - Osono offers Kiki the spare room to stay at the Gütiokipänjä bakery after she returns the babies lost pacifier.

4th place with 75,459 votes Kiki and Tombo are friends. Kiki and Tombo ride his bicycle to the sea and whilst talking Kiki realises she has found a friend of the opposite sex that she gets along with well. But Kiki gets jealous when his friends turn up and sees that among them is the ungrateful girl she delivered the herring pie to.

3rd place with 76,097 votes Kiki and Ursula hitchhike to Ursula’s cabin in the countryside. In the original Japanese version Minami Takayama is the voice actor for both Kiki and Ursula.

2nd place with 76,704 votes - Kiki breaks her broom. Kiki’s powers have weakened and she tries flying exercises with her broom. Kiki realises she can’t understand Jiji’s words and that her magical spirit has become weak. Its said that because this was Kiki’s first encounter with real frustration that the scene left a strong impression with the Japanese public.

1st place with 84,480 votes “Milk Porridge” - Osono makes milk porridge for the under the weather Kiki and Jiji, Supposedly Japanese people like that the sweet milk porridge in this scene is made the same way as in Sweden with warm milk and oats instead of rice.
