'The Matrix 4': What Could Be Next For Keanu Reeves' Neo And Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity?

Given how Keanu Reeves' Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity breathed their last in 'The Matrix Revolutions', how are they returning for 'The Matrix 4'?

Okay, so it is official now. We are getting a fourth installment of The Matrix with Lana Wachowski set to write and direct. The Keanussance (The Keanu Reeves version of the Renaissance) continues!

The morning began with the greatest news of all time (that's until George Miller announces a sequel to Mad Max: Fury Road) and Variety was the newsbearer. They reported that Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich has said,

"We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana. Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe."

Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell will be assisting Wachowski in writing the script and Grant Hill will be co-producing it with her. In addition to that the movie is supposed to begin production in 2020.

Wachowski has said,

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

Back in 2017, Keanu Reeves had said that he would be ready to re-enter the Matrix if the Wachowskis were involved. So, it's no wonder why he has jumped on-board after Lana Wachowski was roped in. He had said,

"The Wachowskis would have to be involved. They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not? People die, stories don’t, people in stories don’t."

Surprisingly enough, the internet was absolutely calm about--I am kidding, I am kidding. Netizens absolutely lost their mind and started celebrating as if The Matrix 4 is releasing today. Here, check out the reactions.

Now, I am a Keanu Reeves fan. I am a Carrie-Anne Moss fan. And I am a fan of The Matrix trilogy. But we need to take a few things into consideration when it comes to the fourth chapter. As far as I remember, Moss' character Trinity is dead. She was last seen in The Matrix Revolutions trying to save Neo from The Machine pursuers by piloting a hovercraft. However, they ended up crashing into the machine city, causing power cables to impale Trinity's abdomen and arm. Additionally, Neo is dead as well, at least technically, because he got assimilated into the Matrix, thereby leading to its reboot. So, how the hell are they coming back?

Well, the first thing that came to my mind is that The Matrix 4 is probably going to be a prequel. Remember the whole news about Michael B. Jordan being cast as a young Morpheus? And remember how Morpheus made it his number one goal to look for Neo? That's why it is quite possible that the new movie is going to show Neo and Trinity meeting a young Morpheus and incepting the idea of searching for the One. Yes, I just predicted a crossover of ideas between two of the great science-fiction movies of all time: Inception and The Matrix. However, that might need a lot of de-aging to justify why Neo and Trinity look old. Hence, brace yourselves.

The second possibility that the fourth installment can explore is the state of the rebooted Matrix. It's true that The Matrix Revolutions ended on a beautiful note topped with a sunshine and everything. But the Oracle also provided two haunting remarks. One, is that peace will last "as long as it can". Two, Neo will return. Which means that the Matrix and the real world is going to be thrown into turmoil due to a new threat, leading to the emergence of Neo. Because while Neo's actual body might be dead, there's a chance that he lives as a part of the Matrix. And upon discovering this new threat, the Matrix can use Neo as a white-blood cell. As for Trinity, well, it's possible that there's a part/memory/code of her that resides in the Matrix, thereby justifying Moss' character's return.

But I know what you might be thinking: 'Why make this movie? Why return to the franchise when the story had reached a conclusion?' In my opinion, it's because we learned jack from The Matrix. The whole purpose of the series was to teach us about free will, about severing the hold that machines have/will have over us, and building true connections in the real world. And here we are slapping VR sets onto our eyes and gushing about how the virtual world is much more satisfying than the real world. So, yeah, the movie needs to exist to give us yet another reminder about what might happen if we give full control to the machines via artificial intelligence.

In conclusion, what I want to say is that I can't wait for the trailer of The Matrix 4 to hit the internet!
