It has been two years since Colombian singer and songwriter Shakira parted ways with former beau and former professional footballer Gerard Piqué Bernabeu, but the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer doesn’t seem to have forgotten the hurt and betrayal. Reflecting on her relationship with Gerard, who she was with for 11 years and shares sons Milan and Sasha, and why she chose not to get married, Shakira said, “In a way, it’s kind of good not to have a husband because that… I don’t know why it was dragging me down, man,” during a recent conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on his podcast.

The singer revealed that she has used the difficult experience she went through during her separation from Gerard to create music and to heal. “Now I feel like working. I feel like writing songs. I feel like making music. It’s a compulsive need of mine that I didn’t feel before,” said Shakira adding, “When life gives you lemons, you have to make lemonade.”

She said she tried to make the most out of those traumatic experiences and channelised her desires, anger, feelings of frustration and disillusionment into productivity, creativity and resilience. “I am still healing. Only robots don’t experience pain but artistes pour their pain into their art,” she stressed.

Shakira, is known for her tracks like “Waka Waka,” “La La La,” “Whenever, Wherever,” and so on, said she teaches her songs to be open to the idea of love despite going through a traumatic experience while being in a relationship with their father, Gerard.  The three-times Grammy Award-winning artiste, opening up about how she discusses her past relationship with her sons so that they’re aware of the reality, added, “There were many lessons in that whole experience. Society teaches us to conceal our feelings in front of our kids. But I think that’s a mistake, because they know better, and they perceive things in many different ways. But if you’re brave enough to talk about things, talk about it with them to understand how they’re perceiving reality as well (sic).”

Now a single mother, Shakira added that being a single mother is tough, highlighting, “I have been very self-critical of myself and that can be exhausting. For me, my happy place is being with my children in my home and at my studio.”

The 47-year-old, who “put her career on hold” to focus on her relationship with Gerard, with whom she parted ways in 2022, has called her ex-boyfriend “Voldemort” in her new diss track Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore) — her first song in seven years.  ‘Voldemort, that one that shouldn’t be mentioned? It’s hopefully the last song that I will write about this, and to him,” she said in a recent interview with The Sunday Times.

Amid speculation of the former soccer player cheating on Shakira, the former couple, in 2022,  announced their break up in a joint statement. “We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding (sic),” it read.
