TheNational Association of Hispanic Publications held its 40th annual convention lastweek and Reflejos was recognized with eight Outstanding Awards.

Reflejos competes with afield of 242 other media outlets across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. These publications are informational sources for manygrowing Hispanic communities.

“This was quite an honor and appreciated recognition of our efforts to continually bring informative content to the readers we have served for 32 years,”said Linda Siete, Reflejos manager.

“Three of the awards this year recognized our annual Collegeand Career Guides,”Siete said, “which is akey niche for Reflejos, as our focus has always been on bringing information bilingually and connecting our colleges to all our communities. JOLIET,ILL. –The UniversityofSt. Francis (USF) is pleased to announce thatsenior education major Diana Ortega from Joliet has been selected as this year’s Student Laureate of TheLincoln AcademyofIllinois. Through this special program, the Lincoln AcademyofIllinois honors Student Laureates from each of the participating Illinois colleges and universities for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanityand for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.

This year’s honorees were invited to watch an online program thatincluded a congratulatorystatement from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and words of encouragement from pastLincoln Laureates. Honorees also received aletter of congratulations from the Academy, acertificate signed by Governor Pritzker,amedallion, achallenge coin, and amonetarygrant.

Ortega, who was nominated for the honor by USFhistoryprofessor Cathleen Schultz, Ph.D., the USFhistorydepartment, and USFdean of student life Mollie Rockafellow,Ed.D., was surprised to learn thatshe was selected as this year’s honoree from USF.

“I was shocked. When Iwas told, I thought Iwas coming in to help with aprojectbut soon found out thatIwas called in to be told thatIwas this year’s Lincoln Laureate,”said Ortega.

“I was so happy.Iimmediately called my dad (Pedro) and he was so happy and so proud. And as my friends and other USF staffmembers heard the news, theyweso happy for me, as well,”she added.

While leadership and service at USF have been laced throughout her collegeexperience, these characteristics for which Ortega is known extend beyond the pastfour years. She was also an active student during her time at JolietWestHigh School, where she participated in Student Council, class committees, choir,new student mentoring, and was amember of the National Honor Society.

However,even with thatlevel of leadership and service through high school, Ortega originally planned to attend alarge universitywhere it would be easy to be “just another student”.

“I really thought thatIwould end up at alargeschool in abig citylikeChicago. I didn’t likeattention and wanted to be independent,”Ortega said.

All thatchanged, though, when she toured USF.

“I wasn’t planning on checking out USF because Iwanted to getawayfrom where I

had grown up. Still, Idecided to visit USF and ended up completely falling in love with it. Theatmosphere was amazing and everyone was justsowelcoming and friendly.It felt right from the firstday thatIset foot on campus,”she said.

Since then, Ortega created apathfor herself at USFthatwas similar to her high school experience. During her time at USF, she has been active in manycapacities at USF, including roles as aresident assistant supervisor and aSaints Ambassador.She is also active with the USFStudent Government Association and is aSchmittScholar.

With graduation only six months away, Ortega offered advice for next fall’s freshman class at USF.

“Makeyour USFexperience whatyou want it to be. Go to club meetings, reach out to people, and look at on-campus work op-

portunities. Igoback to the motto Ifollow: you won’t know until you try. When you are willing to put yourself out there, you’ll be amazed at whatyou might find,”Ortega said.

Following her graduation in the spring, Ortega plans to stay at USFfor one more year to earn amaster’s degree in education through a4+1 program offered through the university. During thattime, she will also complete her student teaching. After earning her master’s degree, she plans to work for alow-income school districtasahigh school historyteacher or middle school science teacher for five years as partofher academic scholarship through Golden Apple.

Los centenares de carpas estaban instaladas en la zona de frontera entre México yEstados Unidos yaloja-ban alos migrantes que querían cruzar asuelo estadouni dense.

Según prensa local, la razón de trás de la decisión del desalojo fue el riesgo de incendio que, para la Protec-ción Civil Estatal de México, existía debido alas fogatas que los migrantes encienden cer

ca de las casas de campaña para mitigar el frío.

Pero no fue un proceso sencillo, Se observa fuego en las carpas, algunas personas resultaron heridas ysepresentaron así forcejeos entre migrantes yagentes de po licía.

BBC Mundo pudo con rmar que no todas las personas que se encontraban en el campamento aceptaron la oferta de las autori dades de ser trasladadas aunrefugio.

El campamento estaba instalado aorillas del río hace más de un mes después de que el gobierno del presi-dente estadounidense, Joe Biden, anunciara el cierre de la frontera con México para los venezolanos, con el objetivo de “abordar la migración irregular

At the event, studentsand families learnedabout free WaukegantoCollege programs thatcan help them enter and succeedinhigher education.

Moises Arreola,aWaukegan to Col legesuccessstory, now astudent at Lake ForestCollege, addressed the students. Arreola explainedhow his own experiences with Waukegan to Collegehelped shape his academicsuccess at Waukegan High School and in college. He cred itsthe organization with leading him to newcareer goals in computer science.

“I was an oblivious eighth grader without verymuch direction,”hesaid. “One day, Iwas forced to attend aschool fair by my mother.Mymom stopped by acollegereadiness program centered around helping students likeme. Ini tially,I wasn’t interested, but Ifigured I would demonstratecourageand apply. Iended up in aWaukegantoCollege math enrichment class. At first, Ifelt overwhelmed,but my tutor was aston ished by the progress Iquickly made.”

Arreola’ssuccess inspired him to become amathtutor with Waukegan to College.

“Each student encounters different challenges and needs different methods to overcome their challenges,”hesaid “I’ve learned thatnomatter how inade quate some students’ math foundations are, Ican find ways to motivatethem and show them thatmathcan be avery exciting subject.

“The services Waukegan to College offers to its students makeitpossible for anyfirst-generation student to go to col lege,”Arreolasaid. “If you are afirst-generation student with dreams of going to college, you would be doing yourself a hugefavor.”

Waukegan to Collegestaffadvisers, along with volunteertutors and men tors,help students realizetheir poten tial and defy higher education barriers. Comprehensive programs startasyoung as fifth grade and involve afamily-based, wraparound model of support.

Theprograms include individual tu toring and mentoring, SAT/ACTprep, collegeadvisingand application assis tance, studentand familyworkshops, field trips and site visits, financial aid assistance and more.

Local schools have limitedresources to assistWaukegan students with the challenging and nuancedpathtocollege. Sinceits start13years ago, Waukeganto College, a501c3 nonprofit, has grownto serve more than 400students.

In thosesame years, 78 students have

graduated from avariety of colleges and universities from coasttocoast. These schools include UniversityofIllinois, Lake ForestCollege, CollegeofLake County,Northwestern University, Knox College, Georgetown, Brown,Tufts, Duke, Vanderbilt, and more Twenty-one graduating high school seniors this year,all of whom were participants in Waukegan to College programs, received acombined total of nearly$14 million in scholarships through the organization’s Scholarship Club. Program aimed to inspire men of color at the WE TRIUMPH: MenofColor Empowerment Summit on Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Student Center Cafeteria (B Building).

Students from Kennedy-King College, Elgin CommunityCollegeand Waubonsee Community College were also in attendance.

Thesummit featured keynotespeaker Julian Green, senior vice president of Com munications and CommunityAffairs for the ChicagoCubs, as well as breakout sessions and apanel discussion.

Theevent began with welcome remarks fromRobertN.Isaac, the studentsuccess ad visor for theTRIUMPHProgram.

“Asmembers of TRIUMPH, we are de termined,”Isaac said. “Weare victors, not victims. We are the authors of our own story.”

Keynote speaker Julian Green explained to the youngmen how important it is for them to use their time wisely,plan for suc cess andrespect their competition.

“Time is veryimportant in life,” Green told the crowd. “Wecannot buy or rent more time. We mustliveinthe present towards health,happinessand success. ”

Theremainder of the summitincluded aspeechvia Zoom from presenter Dr.Paul Oritz, professor of Historyand director of the Samuel Proctor Oral HistoryProgram at the UniversityofFlorida. Theevent conclud ed with apanel discussion frommen in pro fessions rangingfrom community leaders to musicians.

Everyone in attendance received swag bags with acopy of Dr.Oritz’sbook, An Af rican American and LatinX Historyofthe United States included. Isaac felt the summit was agreatopportunityfor young men

of color to hear how inspirational leaders achieved their levels of success.

“Hard work,networkingand dedication pays off,”explained Isaac. “I wantthese young men to know thattheycan do anything, despite where theycome from. There is nothingbetween us besides air and opportunities.”

TheTRIUMPH Program was created to supportand inspire men of color on their path to achieving academic and personal success. En lugar de utilizarlo para captar imágenes, lo han empleado para generar electricidad apartir de la emisión de radiación térmica infrarroja. Here’s how you can avoid holidayscams

TheBetter Business Bureau has received reports of nearly $380 million in online retail fraud losses in 2022 so far, but ‘tis the season when scammers really up their game.

With the post-Thanksgiving traditions of Cyber Mondayand Giving Tuesday, the BBB and others are encouraging people not to leturgent or emotional appeals makethem forget everything they’ve learned about protecting themselves from online forms of stranger danger

“I’ve been doing this for 35 years, and the scammers are getting better at what theydo,”said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the BBB of Chicagoand Northern Illinois. “Everybody should do research and seek information before doing business with someone. If the offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

According to the BBB Scam Tracker launched in 2015, criminals tend to target three keymoments in the online shopping process: when consumers see ads, especially over social media; when theybuy after being enticed by unrealistically low prices or fakewebsites; and after transactions, when scammers send false tracking information and ask for more moneyfor safe delivery.

There’s littleinformation to create a profile of typical scammers, including how and from where theyoperate, because they’re rarely caught, Bernas said. That makes prevention the chiefprotection for consumers.

Unlikeinyears past, when fraudulent websites were more easily identifiable by their misspellings or lack of sophistication, today’sphonysites often appear close to the real thing. They maybeoff by only one letter in their URLs, including starting with an “HTTP”instead of the “HTTPS” secure sites have.

TheIllinois Department of Innovation &Technologyadvises people to keep tabs on their bank and credit card statements, continuously checking accounts for unauthorized activity. Good record-keeping is one of the top tools in maintaining one’s cybersecurity.

“The holidays are abusy time of year for folks shopping virtually,making trav el arrangements and wanting to give back to charitable organizations, but it’s also a busy time for cyber criminals who are trying to takeadvantageofpeople,”Jennifer

While much of today’sfraud occurs online, Bernas warns thatold-school tactics such as check washing are on the rise again this year,with its practitioners seeking to steal mail likely to have checks inside. Scammers use chemicals to remove the original recipient and amount of acheck, so thatthose spaces can be refilled.

He advises people to avoid unsecure mailboxes when sending checks including the blue postoffice mailboxes on weekends when the mail inside is likely to rise to the top and use only indelible black ink when writing checks.

And those who maysee shopping in person at brick-and-mortar stores as protection should remain cautious of age-old scams likepickpocketing and the choreographing of parking lot fender benders in hope of negotiating aquick, off-the-record cash payment. Police or mall securityalways should be contacted after an apparent vehicle accident, Bernas said.

Those victimized by online scams should reportittothe BBB Scam Tracker at bbb.org/scamtracker,the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov or by calling (877) FTC-Help, and their credit card issuer,even if atransaction wasn›t completed.

•Use your credit card. If questionable charges turn up later,you will be able to contestthem. Debit cards don’t offer the same protection.

El cantante yactor español Miguel Bosé advirtióque hay que tener “cuidado” con el éxito ya que es “ve-ne noso”, alavez que subrayó su papel como “primer ídolo” popular de la Transición española, durante su participación en la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (FIL) para presentar su libro “Historia secre-ta de mismejores canciones”.

En una entrevista con EFE en un hotel de Guadalaja ra, Bosé se mostró relajado comentando el libro que reúne las situaciones detrás de sus sesenta mejores canciones, entre ellas éxitos como “Sevilla”, “Súper Superman” o“Amante bandido”.

“Era un libro necesario, una de las piezas de una operación que comenzó con ‘El Hijo del Capitán True no’, la autobiografía, que sigue con la serie que se está emitiendo ahora. La serie es muy musical.
