Arsenal meanwhile announced a net debt of £97.8m for the year 2011 and although their match-day revenue has fallen slightly, the Emirates is still a cash cow worth a minimum of £93m a year. Wenger's acceptance of club policy is disappointing the supporters but the man should receive manager of the decade by keeping Arsenal in the top four while being forced to sell his best players every year. For every player bought and sold at Arsenal in the last five years Wenger makes a £2m profit on average while Chelsea lose about £7m and City throw roughly £12m per deal down the toilet.

ARSENAL: THE SELLING CLUB IF you think that departures of Robin van Persie and Alex Song have officially rubberstamped Arsenal as the Premier League's premier selling club, then you need to cast your mind back to the summer of 2000. Two years after Arsene Wenger had gone from "Arsene Who" to a double-winning manager the Frenchman promptly upset the Highbury faithful by off-loading star midfielders Emmanuel Petit and Marc Overmars to Barcelona for a figure believed to be about £30million. And just a couple of months later, in November, Arsenal submitted their plans for Ashburton Grove Stadium, or as we now know it today - Emirates Stadium. The hierarchy at the club had been considering such a venture since the late 1990s in order to boost matchday revenue and keep pace with Manchester United and other clubs whose ground capacities were growing all the time. In the long-term, Highbury's 40,000-capacity limit wasn't going to cut it, but that would mean in the near and medium term their assets had to be turned into cold, hard cash and at a football club the easiest items that turn a profit are the ones in the dressing room.

The total cost of constructing the Emirates came in at £390m. The club took out a loan of £260m raised another £100m by selling off the naming rights to the middle-eastern airline and still had another £130m to make up, and that was before interest payments came into it. Already from the sales of Overmars, Petit and Nicolas Anelka (sold the summer before for £23m) Arsenal were cash heavy and the policy of selling their best would remain, after all, in Wenger they had a manager with a keen eye and a razor-sharp instinct for spotting young, cheap talent. Already this season Arsenal have broken even in the transfer market. Van Persie and Song have brought in the £39m needed to cover the costs of Lukas Poldolski, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud. In the past five seasons Arsenal have been left with a deficit from their transfer dealings just once and have made an estimated profit of £23m while qualifying for the Champions League every single season (that's 15 years in a row now). By contrast Manchester United are running at a loss of £62.85m from transfers - that would read closer to £140m had they not sold Ronaldo for £80m in 2009. Chelsea are in the red to the tune of £235.55m while the princes of Arabia at Manchester City have dug a transfer hole of £389.09m and that's without adding on the undisclosed fee they paid for Carlos Tevez. All three clubs, however, have claimed Premier League titles during this spending spree but in truth Chelsea and City would be facing administration if their playboy owners got bored and decided to take their oil money elsewhere while United are constantly on the precipice of turmoil with the almost £450m of debt leveraged onto the club by the Glazers' takeover in 2005.

-3-

But one number stands out above all the rest when it comes to Arsenal. The sales of Emmanuel Adebayor, Gael Clichy, Kolo Toure, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Alex Song and Robin van Persie made a staggering profit of £114.05m. However, Wenger acquired the lot for just under £27m and sold them for a total of £141m. It won't always be the way for Arsenal, the days are coming when the stadium will start paying for the team instead of the team financing the stadium. In the aftermath of Glasgow Rangers’ demise and the fact that their Premier League rivals’ long-term security tied to the whims of billionaires, the north London club can breathe comfortably in the knowledge that they will be able to provide for themselves. The club may have won few trophies in over a decade of being a "selling club", but if it provides Arsenal with a platform for the future then their fans may look back at it as their most successful period ever.

SPAIN LFP ADVERTS AN OPENING DAY STRIKE The 2012-13 Primera Division season went ahead as planned this weekend after the Spanish Football League (LFP) staged an extraordinary general meeting with 13 discontented clubs last Tuesday, yet the dispute surrounding television rights is set to rumble on into the new campaign. The LFP called the conference after Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Espanyol, Getafe, Granada, Real Mallorca, Osasuna, Rayo Vallecano, Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Real Zaragoza last week released a list of demands concerning television rights and unreasonable kick-off times.

While officials from the 13 clubs said that these issues had not been resolved, they expressed their satisfaction that progress is being made and that Spain’s Secretary of State for Sport, Miguel Cardenal, is fully briefed on the situation through his presence at the meeting. “We discussed issues to do with the league, with governance and with television broadcasts,” said LFP president Jose Luis Astiazaran. “There will be games this weekend that will start at the scheduled time.” The demands from the 13 clubs include a call for the LFP to form a “transparent and regulated” system for drawing up kickoff times. Several clubs have voiced their frustration at games being scheduled as late as 23:00 CET in the opening round of fixtures, stating that the drawing up of kick-offs favours some teams. However, the main area of dissatisfaction revolves around the current battle for supremacy between pay-television operator Prisa and the Mediapro agency. Prisa has accused Mediapro of launching an “illegal” sales process for rights covering the country’s top two football divisions for the next two seasons. The 13 clubs have stated the Prisa-Mediapro battle has created “a situation of serious legal insecurity which affects all the clubs”.

-4-

They have called on the companies to settle any outstanding debts with the clubs and to drop any legal demands against them. “There will have to be a solution but it won’t be ready tomorrow,” Miguel Guillen, president of Real Betis, told the club’s radio station. “It was an extremely important step forward that the Secretary of State (Cardenal) is perfectly aware of the issues to be addressed.” The subject of the distribution of TV rights revenue in the top flight was also on the agenda at Tuesday’s meeting. The Primera Division stands apart from its major European rivals in utilising a team-by-team, rather than collective bargaining process. The disparity in TV revenues generated by Barcelona and Real Madrid, when compared to the rest of the league, is one of the key reasons cited for the current competitive gulf that exists in the Primera Division. The Primera Division clubs’ broadcast revenues are expected to reach €650M for the forthcoming season and Spain’s big two account for nearly half that figure alone. Guillen said Spain would be well advised to model itself on the system employed by Germany’s 1.Bundesliga. “We fully agree that the way football is organised in Germany would be an ideal formula to apply in Spain, both in the equitable distribution of (cash from) audiovisual rights and treating the fans with maximum respect,” he said.

FABRICE MUAMBA RETIRES FROM FOOTBALL The player who collapsed while playing for Bolton Wanderers against Tottenham Hotpsur in an FA Cup match in March. Despite making an astonishing recovery he has been forced into retiring from professional football. Muamba, 24, has called time on his career following medical advice and admits the decision has left him devastated. The football world was shocked when Muamba collapsed while playing at White Hart Lane on 17th March. He received lengthy attention on the pitch and it later emerged that his heart had stopped for 78 minutes. Remarkably he made a stunning recovery and left hospital a month later but in his announcement he admitted: "While the news is devastating, I have much to be thankful for. I thank God that I am alive and I pay tribute once again to the members of the medical team who never gave up on me." Muamba told Bolton's official website: "Since suffering my heart attack and being discharged from hospital, I have remained utterly positive in the belief I could one day resume my playing career and play for Bolton Wanderers once again. As part of my on-going recovery, last week I travelled to Belgium to seek further medical advice from a leading cardiologist. "But the news I received was obviously not what I had hoped it would be and it means I am now announcing my retirement from professional football. Football has been my life since I was a teenage boy and it has given me so many opportunities. Above all else, I love the game and count myself very lucky to have been able to play at the highest level. I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career, and the Bolton fans who have been incredible. I am blessed to have the support of my family and friends at this time." Bolton chairman Phil Gartside said: "To have Fabrice here and with us is truly amazing and we are all very thankful for that. We are all hugely disappointed that Fabrice will be unable to return to his playing career but we have to be guided by the medical recommendations and the best interests of Fabrice. The most important thing is that Fabrice and his family have the rest of their lives ahead of them." Bolton boss Owen Coyle added: "We have spoken with Fabrice and he knows we will always support him in whatever he wants to do and that we will always be here for him. He is obviously massively disappointed that he won't be able to carry on his career, but everyone has seen what a fighter and strong person he is in mind and body. We know that he will go on to achieve great things and within all this disappointment, the most important thing is that he is here, alive, today." Muamba and his family fled war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, seeking asylum in the UK. Despite arriving in London age 11 and unable to speak English, he went on to achieve ten GCSEs and three A levels and joined Arsenal's youth academy in 2002. He later joined Birmingham, before moving to Bolton in 2008.

NEWS SHORTS SOUTH AFRICA: Leading South African club Kaizer Chiefs has seen its general manager charged with corruption in relation to the development of Nelspruit’s stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.Bobby Motaung, the son of the Johannesburg club’s founder, Kaizer Motaung, was charged on Thursday with fraud, forgery and theft, along with a fellow director of consulting firm Lefika Emerging Equity. Reuters reports that elite South African police unit the Hawks have accused Lefika of fraudulently securing a tender to design Nelspruit’s R1.2 billion (US$146 million) stadium, which hosted four games during the World Cup and is set to stage matches during South Africa’s staging of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Lefika has been accused of submitting false tax documents that inflated the status of the company in what had been a controversial tender process for the stadium. Hawks spokesman McIntosh Polela told Reuters that the pair have been released on bail of $6,000 each and were due to appear in court again on October 15. Kaizer Chiefs confirmed Motaung’s court appearance, but added in a statement: “This is not a club matter and should not be treated as such.” ENGLAND: Martin Skrtel has committed his future to Liverpool by signing a new long-term deal with the club. The 28year-old, who was voted as the Reds' player of the year last season, has been recently linked with a move away from Anfield - with Manchester City, Arsenal, AC Milan and former club Zenit St Petersburg among the sides reportedly interested in the defender. However, the Slovakia international quashed those rumours by putting pen to paper on a new contract with the Merseyside outfit, declaring that he wants to make history with 'one of the biggest clubs in the world'. "I'm happy because I am a part of one of the biggest clubs in the world. After last season there was a lot of talk about my future but I have to say that the first priority for me was always to sign a new deal with Liverpool. "For me it's a great thing to play for Liverpool. I am proud to play for Liverpool with these great players - probably some of the best players in the world.

MALTESE INTERNATIONAL SAMMUT GETS 10 YEAR BAN UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary body announced on Monday night that former Malta international midfielder Kevin Sammut had been found guilty of match fixing and banned from UEFA competition for 10 years. Further to this, UEFA also stated that it would appeal to FIFA to have the ban extended – barring the 31 year old from any football-related activity worldwide. The charges relate to a match in Norway, a 4-0 Euro 2008 qualifying win for the hosts against Malta. Norway had scored 3 goals in the final 18 minutes, however Sammut was substituted at half-time with the score just 1-0. Evidence was heard from notorious Croatian fraudster Marijo Cvrtak, who had instigated the case when giving evidence at his own trial last year. He claimed to have met at least three Maltese players in an Oslo hotel before the game. Two other players, Stephen Wellman and Kenneth Scicluna, were also charged as part of the investigation. However, despite playing the full game and the suspicion from UEFA that the players were intricately involved in the match fixing, the pair were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

BRAZIL: The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has agreed a 10-year contract for the Pitch International agency to organise, promote and commercialise all Brazil international friendly matches. The London-based sports marketing agency’s relationship with the CBF will begin on the FIFA match date of October 16. Pitch International, which replaces Kentaro in the role, will be responsible for all organisational and commercial aspects of Brazil’s friendly matches both at home and abroad through to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In addition to organising matches, Pitch International will be responsible for the commercialisation of all broadcast, sponsorship, stadium signage, ticketing and commercial rights of the friendly matches of the five-time World Cup winners and the planet’s most marketable international team. CBF president Jose Maria Marin said: “The CBF are delighted that Pitch International will exclusively organise and commercialise the friendly matches of the Seleção, both in Brazil and outside of Brazil, until the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. We have been impressed with their innovative ideas, enthusiasm and extensive network of international football and commercial contacts and look forward to a long and successful working relationship with them.” Jonathan Rogers, managing director of Pitch International, added: “It is a great honour for Pitch to enter into such a prestigious partnership with the CBF. We are extremely proud to count the CBF as a new long-term partner of Pitch and will work tirelessly to deliver on their goals and objectives. This partnership also demonstrates the continued expansion of the Pitch business and highlights our growing sponsorship rights and event management business.” CONCACAF: The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) has signed a four-year agreement that will see US network Fox Soccer broadcast its Gold Cup and Champions League competitions. The deal starts with the current Champions League season, continuing through the 2015-2016 edition. It also covers the 2013 and 2015 Gold Cups, giving Fox Soccer exclusive English-language rights in the United States to both of CONCACAF’s showpiece events. The Gold Cup national team competition is traditionally hosted in the United States.

PSL TRANSFERS RUNDOWN The new Premier Soccer League season may be underway, but South Africa’s elite clubs are still chopping and changing their squads in a late attempt to improve their chances of success in 2012-13. Recent weeks have seen imports from other African leagues, potential exports to Europe and a number of notable transfers between rival PSL clubs. Perhaps this week’s most surprising story is SuperSport leftback Innocent Mdledle’s (pictured right) pending transfer to Wits University – just one month after signing a two-year deal at SuperSport. The defender only left previous club Mamelodi Sundowns in July but appears to be heading to his third club in two months after realising playing time at SuperSport may be limited. Not-so-innocent Mdledle was shown the door by Mamelodi after being arrested for drinkdriving. Another former SuperSport player looking for increased first-team opportunites is 21-year-old Orlando Pirates midfielder Mduduzi Nyanda, who is currently training with Bloemfontein Celtic. Unable to break into Pirates’ starting XI, Nyanda was loaned to both SuperSport and Platinum Stars last term, and

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens seems to have closed the door on young defender Siyanda Xulu’s move to Russian outfit FC Rostov by telling reporters there would be no more transfers at the Pretorian club: “I am happy with the players who are here now, so I don’t need any more players and nobody has to go.”

has decided that his future lies away from the Orlando Stadium. Platinum Stars have themselves completed the signing of Botswana no.1 Kabelo Dembe from Township Rollers in the goalkeeper’s homeland. Already his country’s first-choice custodian at the tender age of 22, Dembe impressed several PSL clubs after shining in Botswana’s 1-1 draw with the South African national team in June.

Russian Premier League side Rostov had seen their initial bid of R5 million turned down by Sundowns, much to Xulu’s chagrin: the 20-yearold took to his Facebook page to slate his current employers, sighing “What about my dream; what about my career [?] It is always about money.” Keen to move abroad, Xulu has already enjoyed trials at European giants Barcelona and Arsenal, but looks set to remain in South Africa this season after Neeskens said “He can go if [Rostov] come in with a better offer”, and told the defender’s potential suitors that unless the transfer is completed by the end of the week, the deal is off.

Elsewhere in the league, defending champions Orlando Pirates added Zambian international Collins Mbesuma to a fearsome forward line that already includes ex-Blackburn forward Benni McCarthy – South Africa’s all-time topscorer – as well as another new signing, Takesure Chinyama, who enjoyed a prolific spell in the Polish top flight, and promising youngster Bongani Ndulula, who is nicknamed “Drogba” by team-mates and coaches alike. Portly striker Mbesuma, 28, joins on a 3-year deal from Golden Arrows, and Pirates coach Augusto Palacios has confirmed that the transfer marks the end of the club’s summer dealings, calling Mbesuma “the last player [who is] coming to Orlando Pirates to reinforce the squad for the PSL”.

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES

The World Cup qualifiers are fast approaching, and the world’s top nations were in warm-up action this past Wednesday evening, here’s a few reports from selected results. SWEDEN 0-3 BRAZIL - Second-half substitute Alexandre Pato (pictured left) helped Brazil to a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden. Pato scored a quick-fire brace in the 84th and 87th minutes, the latter a penalty, to ensure Brazil's dominance over a Swedish side missing injured captain Zlatan Ibrahimović was evident on paper. Pele and other members of Brazil's 1958 World Cup-winning team were eager onlookers at the soon-to-be demolished Rasunda Stadium, centrepiece of those World Cup finals which Brazil won after beating hosts Sweden 5-2. PUERTO RICO 1-2 SPAIN - Spain picked up a 2-1 win over Puerto Rico, but will be disappointed not to have won by a bigger margin. The hosts made it difficult for Vicente Del Bosque's men with their compact defending but goals from Arsenal new boy Santiago Cazorla and former Gunner Cesc Fabregas ensured La Roja went into half-time with a two-goal cushion. However, the Spaniards failed to enhance upon that advantage and El Huracan Azul pulled a goal back through Marc Cintron to earn a hugely respectable result. La Roja will be hoping for a far improved performance when they begin their World Cup qualifying program against Georgia next month. GERMANY 1-3 ARGENTINA - Argentina took advantage of Ron-Robert Zieler`s red card, to record a comfortable 3-1 victory over Germany in their friendly encounter in Berlin. The Hannover keeper was given his marching orders after half an hour for bringing down Jose Sosa in the area, though Lionel Messi saw his resulting penalty saved by substitute keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. However, Sami Khedira`s own goal on the stroke of half-time gave Argentina a lead they would never relinquish, with Messi atoning for his spot-kick faliure with the visitors` second goal on 52 minutes. Angel Di Maria`s stunning drive, from 30 yards out, sealed the victory with just over a quarter of an hour to go, rendering Benedikt Howedes` 81st minute header nothing but mere consolation. Argentina host Paraguay next month in their first WC qualifier as Germany face an easier task at home to minnows the Faroe Islands. ENGLAND 2-1 ITALY - A stunning Jermaine Defoe goal ten minutes from time handed England their first win against Italy in 15 years, the Tottenham hitman sealing a 2-1 victory for Roy Hodgson’s men. England had to come from behind, with Daniele De Rossi heading in to give the Euro 2012 runners-up a 15th-minute lead, before Phil Jagielka equalized 12 minutes later with another header. However, just when it appeared as if the match was petering out to a draw, Defoe finished off a counter-attack led by fellow substitute James Milner before sending a long-range shot arrowing into Salvatore Sirigu’s top-left corner. SCOTLAND 3-1 AUSTRALIA – Craig Levein’s side ran out 3-1 winners against Australia at Easter Road, Edinburgh. The hosts nearly took the lead in spectacular fashion when Jordan Rhodes's cheeky backheel flew just wide of the goal. Steven Naismith then had his effort saved as the Scots dominated the opening period. However, they found themselves behind on 19 minutes when Mark Bresciano found the net for the Aussies with a dipping volley from all of 30 yards. Craig Levein's men equalised after 28 minutes thanks to a Rhodes header on what was the striker's first senior start for his country. The home side got themselves in front just after the hour as substitute Jason Davidson, who was making his debut for the visitors, headed in to his own net. The win was sealed with 15 minutes left to play thanks to Ross McCormack's solo effort which saw the substitute end a dynamic run with a low shot across Adam Federici.

Will Burns Twitter @WillBurns6 RUSSIA 1-1 COTE D’IVORIE - Fabio Capello took charge of the Russian national team for the first time this week when they met Ivory Coast in Moscow. Capello decided to put captain Andrei Arshavin on the bench therefore handing the armband to Zenit’s Igor Denisov. Despite Ivory Coast starting the better of the two sides, it was Alan Dzagoev’s free kick which gave Russia the lead ten minutes after half time. When Arshavin was brought on, he received a chorus of boos after controversial comments after Russia’s exit from Euro 2012. Max Gradel spoiled Capello’s debut equalising twelve minutes from time.

Neal Doyle Twitter @Neal34Doyle & @RussiaNT_LIVE

UKRAINE 0-0 CZECH REPUBLIC – Ukraine started off the post Shevchenko-era with a 0-0 draw in Lviv on Wednesday night. Though the home side dominated for the vast majority of the 90 minutes they could not find a way past Petr Cech's goal. There were plenty of positive signs for Ukraine manager Oleh Blokhin, but the poor finishing will be a matter of concern. Ukraine kick off their qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup on September 11 at Wembley against England in a rematch of Ukraine's final group stage match at Euro 2012.

CHARLEROI FEEL THE HEAT; STANDARD HIT THEM FOR SIX Temperatures in Belgium on Saturday night were the second highest ever recorded and it showed. As in many countries, all games were stopped half way through the two halves for a drinks break. It was tough for all clubs but even tougher for those teams that found themselves playing with 10 men for lengthy periods of the match. That was the case for two clubs carrying the flag for Wallonia: Charleroi and Mons. Charleroi played for 53 minutes with 10 men against Standard and they couldn’t hold it together – losing 6-2 at home. Meanwhile, Mons played for 33 minutes with reduced numbers at Anderlecht and, despite a plucky performance, lost 2-1. The “Walloon derby” – the first time Standard have played at Charleroi for 18 months - was forecast to be a hot affair and so it turned out. The stars of the show for Standard were Venezuelan winger Luis Seijas (a goal and three assists) and 19 year-old Nigerian Imoh Ezekiel. Everything that Seijas touched turned to goals and the young Ezekiel reminded this observer of a young Michael Owen: fearless, fast and with a great eye for goal. It’s often said that big teams get the rub of the green and so it seemed at the weekend at Anderlecht with Mons being unlucky to have Aloys Nong given offside incorrectly on two occasions. Mons coach Enzo Scifo was not too happy with the referee but he did get the Anderlecht crowd chanting his name in memory of times gone by. Anderlecht were not on the top of their game and were probably thinking about their Champions League date in Cyprus on Wednesday. Georges Leekens made a few changes at Club Brugge and left Meme Tchite on the bench. In the end the home side ran out 3-1 winners vs. Beerschot but it was hard not to feel sorry for the visitors as Jonathan Blondel clearly fouled Hernan Losada before the Brugge midfielder scored the second goal. Zulte Waregem continued on their winning ways with a 2-0 victory over a poor Kortrijk. Franck Berrier was heavily involved in both goals and he must be wondering where it all went wrong in his time at Standard. Lokeren took the three points against hitherto undefeated KV Mechelen. KV had the best of the game until 19 year-old South African full back Ayanda Patosi was introduced at the break; his crosses were rather Beckham-esque and he is certainly one to watch. Lierse twice hit the post against Racing Genk but the ex-champions hung on to their undefeated record; one win and four draws. As for Waasland-Beveren, they had several chances that went begging when Gent were the visitors. Trond Sollied’s men then showed some efficiency at last by breaking away with goals from Hans Van der Bruggen and Christian Bruls. The final game was a cracker with Cercle Brugge twice taking the lead at Leuven only to lose 3-2 at the death.

EVERTON UPSET MAN UTD, WBA SHOCK REDS

RESULTS Saturday 18th August Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland Fulham 5-0 Norwich City QPR 0-5 Swansea City Reading 1-1 Stoke City West Bromwich Albion 3-0 Liverpool West Ham United 1-0 Aston Villa Newcastle United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

A double shock occurred in the opening weekend of the Premier League season and the first came from The Hawthorns. Steve Clarke’s West Bromwich Albion trounced Liverpool, running out 30 winners. It was the same old story for Liverpool, creating numerous chances, most of which falling to Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez who missed every chance. New Reds boss, Brendan Rodgers bemoaned the standard of refereeing however he must regret that upon seeing the replays. The incidents in question were two penalty awards and subsequent sending off of Daniel Agger. Shane Long missed the first penalty and Martin Skrtel fouled Long for the second which was put away from Peter Odemwingie. A thunderbolt from Zoltan Gera started the scoring with a Romelu Lukaku debut goal finishing up. Over at Loftus Road, big spenders Queens Park Rangers came undone by a fantastic performance from Michael Laudrup’s Swansea. Swansea started as ferocious as lions and duly humiliated QPR 5-0 with goals from Michu (2), Nathan Dyer (2) and Scott Sinclair. The pick of the goals came from a counter-attack with Michu scored a stunning curling shot, and looked a bargain with his £2M price tag from Rayo Vallecano. In another 5-0, Fulham hammered Norwich City. Martin Jol’s side started without the want-away Clint Dempsey who has refused to play for the club, trying to force a move to Liverpool. In his absence, new boy Mladen Petric stepped up scoring two and was a thorn in Norwich’s side throughout. The other goals coming from Damien Duff, Alexander Kacaniklic and Steve Sidwell. Andre Villa-Boas’ Tottenham Hotspur started the season with a defeat at Newcastle United. Spurs looked bright hitting the woodwork twice, however an inspired performance by Hatem Ben Arfa helped The Toon to a vital win. Goals from Demba Ba, his first since February, and Ben Arfa himself with a penalty that he won. In-between there was a goal for in-form striker Jermain Defoe. The game was marred by an altercation between Alan Pardew and the linesman Stuart Burt, when the Toon boss believed the ball had went out for a throw in, he pushed Burt and was sent to the stands by referee Martin Atkinson. Arsenal started the season without Robin van Persie however recent signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla did play. Podolski was below his best and could not produce a goal for Arsenal, however Cazorla impressed on his debut with his neat passing and ability to see passes no one else can. Unfortunately for Arsenal they, or Olivier Giroud could not find a winner but don’t take things away from Sunderland. The Black Cats were resilient all game and stuck to their task, coming up with a great result in their eyes. Reading’s return to the top flight paired them with Stoke on the opening day of the season. Adam Le Fondre scored a late penalty to rescue a point for Reading after Gareth McCleary was fouled by Dean Whitehead in the box, the Stoke man receiving a second yellow for the challenge. Earlier in the game, new Stoke signing Michael Kightly scored on his debut, however, there was egg on keeper Adam Federici’s face as the shot was rather tame, and it squirmed through his arms. A controversial Kevin Nolan goal was enough for West Ham against Aston Villa in a game of very few chances. West Ham’s Ricardo Vaz Te was deemed to be in an offside position when the ball was played to him, and with the linesman Simon Long flagging the Villa defence hesitated, Nolan was free to slot home. The referee Mike Dean deemed that the ball had come off a Villa player. Dean spoke to the Long and allowed the goal to stand, and after the game on the replay it showed that Dean made the correct decision. Chelsea’s opener came at Wigan and started with two goals in the opening six minutes. A fast break on two minutes, allowed Branislav Ivanović a free run at the Wigan goal, the player starting the game right back, slid the ball neatly past Ali Al-Habsi like a seasoned striker. New signing Eden Hazard impressed in midfield and was heavily involved with both goals. The first he had slid the ball into Ivanović’s path, and the second he wiggled and squirmed his way into the box, before being brought down by new Wigan signing Ivan Ramis. Frank Lampard scored the resulting penalty. Manchester City’s defence of their title began entertaining new boys Southampton and needed a late winner from Samir Nasri. The Saints showed no fear and played well, but it was City who had the first real chance. Carlos Tevez won a penalty after he was tumbled by a clumsy Jos Hooiveld challenge. With Sergio Aguero being earlier carried off the pitch, the kick fell to David Silva, it was weak and easily saved by Kelvin Davis. Carlos Tevez ensured Man City went in at the break one up, sliding the ball neatly past Davis at the front post. After the break, Southampton’s top scorer from last season Rickie Lambert came off the bench, and it didn’t take him long to make his mark, curling the ball past Joe Hart to level the game. This gave the Saints more purpose and shortly after debutant Jack Rodwell gave the ball away, the new boys punished them racing up field and Steven Davis scoring to take Southampton 2-1 up. The Sky Blues rallied at this point and turned the pressure up on Southampton, with a mistake by Davis allowed Edin Dzeko to slot home. Ten minutes from time Samir Nasri pounced on a loose ball to tie the win up for City in a thrilling game. On Monday night, we saw the second upset of the weekend as Manchester United’s fell to Everton 1-0, thanks to a second half header from the outstanding Marouane Fellaini. Fellaini was a constant threat to the Red Devils that started new signing Robin van Persie on the bench. Everton hassled Man United from the off, and rarely gave them time to settle on the ball, producing a great display to upset Sir Alex’s men.

FRENCH LIGUE 1 - WEEK TWO

PSG FALTER AGAIN BUT IT IS ONWARDS AND UPWARDS FOR BASTIA

RESULTS Friday 17th August Lille 1-1 Nancy Saturday 18th August Lyon 4-1 Troyes Lorient 2-1 Montpeiller Bastia 2-1 Reims Brest 1-0 Evian TG Toulouse 2-1 Saint-Etienne Valenciennes 0-0 Nice

Following last week’s frantic start to the Ligue 1 campaign its second instalment had a lot to live up to and in typical fashion Ligue 1 delivered. Lille were hoping to make it two wins from two as they hosted Nancy at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole, but despite home advantage Rudi Garcia’s men found themselves a goal down 10 minutes before the interval. Nancy winger Djamel Bakar cut in from the right flank before firing a low curling shot past the helpless Mickaël Landreau in the Lille goal. Before half time Lille responded. Summer arrivals Marvin Martin and Salomon Kalou combined to level the scores. Martin’s pinpoint cross was headed home by the former Chelsea forward on the stroke of half time. After the interval both teams squandered chances before Nancy forward Benjamin Moukandjo was dismissed for a second yellow card for dragging back Dimitri Payet. Despite playing the final 10 minutes with 10 men, Nancy held on for a much deserved point. Lyon made it two wins in two as they brushed aside ten-man Troyes. After a dull first half the game sprung into action after the interval. Troyes took a shock lead through Jean-Christophe Bahebeck to silence the Stade Municipal de Gerland two minutes into the second half, but their lead did not last long as Lyon responded three minutes later. Lisandro saw his penalty well saved by Troyes goalkeeper but from the resulting corner Gomis equalised with a bullet header. Michel Bastos then put Lyon in front with an exquisite over head kick from 16 yards out. Things then went from bad to worse for Troyes as Julien Faussurier was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Cris. Lyon then went for the jugular scoring twice in the last five minutes. First Lisandro made up for his earlier penalty miss with a fine strike before Gomis scored his second after a good turn and neat finish to secure all three points for OL. Bastia came from behind to beat Reims 2-1. The away side took the lead with just five minutes on the clock through Nicolas Fauvergue. After the interval the tide turned as Anthony Weber conceded a penalty kick and was sent off for his challenge on Florian Thauvin. Anthony Modeste converted the penalty to level the scores. Reims shot themselves in the foot as they finished the game with nine men following Mickaël Tacalfred’s dismissal. And in the 95th minute Bastia scored a dramatic winner through Ilan to pinch all three points. Brest left it late to beat Evian at the Stade Francis-Le Blé. The home side dominated throughout but could not find a way past the resilient Evian defence until the 91st minute. Defender Baysse headed home a late winner to secure all three points for Brest. Montpellier were denied a first win of the season as Lorient netted twice in injury time to nick all three points. The reigning champions took the lead in the first half through Herrera, the Argentine finished off a well worked Montpellier move to give the away side the lead. The champions looked set to see out the final four minutes with ease but Lorient thought otherwise. Alain Traoré levelled things up with an unstoppable strike. And before the home crowd could settle, Aliadière struck a late winner sending the Stade Yves Allainmat into ecstasy. Toulouse secured their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Saint-Etienne. The home side took the lead just after the half hour mark when Étienne Capoue lost his marker and finished off a well worked corner routine. Wissam Ben Yedder then doubled the home side’s lead with an unstoppable long range effort which nestled in the back of the net. The travelling side’s fight back failed to materialise until the 92nd minute as Gradel fired home a spot kick, but it was too little too late as Toulouse held on for the win. Marseille cruised to a 2-0 win over Sochaux at the Stade Vélodrome. Gignac finally opened the scoring on 55 minutes as the prolific striker scored a header from six yards out. Despite constant pressure the home side failed to add to the score until second half injury time. Fanni scrambled home the ball following Amalfitano’s free-kick. Bordeaux beat Rennes 1-0 in a game which lacked goal mouth action. The home side missed a penalty early in the first half as Henri Saivet’s strike was well saved by Costil in the Rennes goal. Both sides were restricted to long rang efforts throughout the game, but eventually there was something else to talk about as Obraniak netted the only goal of the game on 75 minutes. Francis Gillot's side have now won eight Ligue 1 games on the bounce stretching back into last season. High spending PSG were once again held to a draw, this time against Ajaccio. And with things not going the capital team’s way frustration clearly set in. First summer signing Lavezzi was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Benjamin André before manager Ancelotti was sent to the stands for kicking a water bottle on to the pitch in frustration. Both teams settled for a point, all in all a fair result. Valenciennes and Nice took a share of the points as both teams failed to break the dead lock in what was a boring affair.

DUTCH EREDIVISIE - WEEK TWO

AJAX AND PSV WALK TO VICTORY BUT TWENTE STAY TOP

RESULTS Saturday 18th August PSV 5-0 Roda JC NAC Breda 0-1 FC Twente PEC Zwolle 0-1 Vitesse VVV-Venlo 1-3 FC Utrecht Feyenoord 1-1 Heerenveen

After an opening day defeat at the hands of RKC, Dick Advocaat’s PSV bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Roda JC. The Kerkrade side got off to a good start but quickly receded as Kevin Strootman (pictured right) gave the Eindhoven club the lead with a header from a Dries Mertens free-kick inside the first quarter of an hour. Luck played a significant part in PSV’s second and third goals as Mertens’ shot from the edge of the area took a deflection and rolled towards Ola Toivonen who was able to divert past Filip Kurto with a back-heel. Then Jeremain Lens’ effort side took a wild deflection before landing in the back of the net. Lens’ second of the game was all his own work, however, with a fantastic run down the right wing before cutting in and firing in. Georginio Wijnaldum put the icing on the cake when a one-two with Tim Matavz ended with the 21-year-old knocking past Kurto. Twente ensured they remain top of the league for another week at least with their 1-0 win over NAC Breda. Steve McClaren’s men were by far the better side and as they passed up several goal scoring opportunities before eventually taking the lead through Leroy Fer whose free header from Dusan Tadic’s corner flew into the net. The visitors could have doubled their lead but Fer and Luc Castaignos both missed the target. NAC came close to capitalising on Twente’s wasted opportunities and stealing a point as Danny Verbeek fired towards goal, his shot took a deflection off of Douglas but went just wide. Vitesse recorded a victory over Eredivisie newboys Zwolle, who were playing their first home match in the Dutch top flight for eight years. The visitors put pressure on their opponents’ goal from the early stages and had a chance to take the lead but Guram Kashia effort from a corner was blocked by Bart van Hintum. Fred Benson and Giovanni Gravenbeek both broke forward later in the first-half but neither could put Zwolle in the lead. It was Renato Ibarra who scored the winning goal just after the hour mark when Marco van Ginkel’s sublime through ball set him up perfectly to slot past Leon ter Wielen. Utrecht fought back from a goal down to record a 3-1 win over VVV on Saturday night. The Venlo club took the lead when Yanic Wildschut fired from distance after 26 minutes. Nana Asare ensured the teams went in level at the break when he knocked it past Niki Maenpaa. Utrecht went ahead early in the second period when Cedric van der Gun was able to tap in after a mix-up in the VVV box, then Adam Sarota found Alexander Gerndt with a delightful through ball and the 26-year-old rounded goalkeeper Maenpaa before tucking it away. Marco van Basten recorded his first point as Heerenveen coach as his side drew 1-1 with Feyenoord. The Frisian side will be disappointed to have surrendered the lead which was gifted to them by Joris Mathijsen. The veteran defender brought Filip Djuricic down inside the box, leaving the referee no choice but to dismiss him on his debut before Djuricic converted the penalty. But Ronald Koeman’s men fought back and Ruben Schaken managed to rescue a point for last season’s runners-up when he drove into the box and slammed into the net. Groningen should have had the game tied up by half-time as they enjoyed the majority of possession over a Willem II side which offered nothing going forward in the first 45. Robert Maaskant’s side took the lead 26 minutes into the match when Mitchell Schet headed across goal for David Texeira to divert over the line. Willem II came out a much better side after the break and went on to draw level with Marc Hocher playing a delightful one-two with Hans Mulder before smashing it into the bottom corner. AZ disposed of Peter Bosz’s Heracles with relative ease on Sunday as they picked up their first win of the new campaign. Jozy Altidore opened the scoring for the Alkmaar club when he nodded in a Roy Beerens cross. A fantastic passing move led to Adam Maher squaring for Maarten Martens inside the box who made it 2-0. Samuel Armenteros reduced the deficit to one goal when he flew in to head Luis Pedro’s cross past Esteban but Altidore went on a great individual run, capping it off with a lovely finish to secure the three points. A last minute Danny Holla free-kick earned a point for ADO Den Haag as they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with RKC. Teddy Chevalier’s opener put the visitors in the ascendancy but Vito Wormgoor levelled soon after. Chevalier looked to have secured the three points when he netted after 89 minutes. But Holla came to the rescue two minutes into injury time with a sublime set-piece from the edge of the area. Ajax strolled to a 6-1 victory over an NEC side which put up no fight at all. Jody Lukoki (pictured right) opened the scoring when he blasted past Gabor Babos. Christian Eriksen made it 2-0 in 17 minutes and Tobias Sana extended the Eredivisie champions’ lead three minutes later. The boos started ringing out from the home crowd as Theo Janssen made it 4-0 before 40 minutes had been played. The visitors’ fifth goal illustrated exactly how unfortunate NEC were when Michel Breuer’s attempted clearance hit Siem de Jong and bounced into the net. Substitute Bram Nuytinck grabbed a consolation goal for Alex Pastoor’s side when he diverted past Kenneth Vermeer but Sana was on hand to restore Ajax’s five goal lead when Siem de Jong squared to the 23-year-old who nudged it over the line.

RUSSIAN PREMIER LEAGUE - WEEK FIVE

SPARTAK COME FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT RUBIN

RESULTS Saturday 18th August Spartak Moscow 2-1 Rubin Kazan Krasnodar 0-0 Rostov Volga 0-2 Lokomotiv Moscow

After last weeks humiliating 5-0 defeat at champions Zenit, Unai Emery called on his side to respond positively ahead of the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Fenerbahce on Tuesday. Spartak certainly started the brighter, applying plenty of pressure and coming closest through Brazilian striker Ari. However, it was the away side who struck the first blow when Paul Kasaev went down, somewhat easily, under the challenge of Rafael Carioca just inside the penalty area. This left Israeli international Bibras Natcho to step up and convert his third spot kick of the season. Rubin also started the second period on top with new signing Salomon Rondon causing all sorts of problems with his physical presence. The equaliser came fifteen minutes from the end through Spartak’s latest acquisition. Another one of Bilyaletdinov’s threatening corners was finally turned into a goal when Brazilian international Romulo managed to rise highest at the near post and power his header Ryzhikov in the Rubin goal. The match was decided on eighty four minutes when Welliton was through on goal and was met with a crunching tackle from Argentinian full back Cristian Ansaldi. The only decision referee Aleksei Nikolaev had to make was whether the challenge took place inside or outside the area. Having decided that it took place inside the eighteen yard box, it was left up to Dmitry Kombarov to seal the three points for the home side. The Russian international managed to send Ryzhikov the same way Andriy Dikan was sent by Natcho in the first half. Elsewhere this week, Zenit St. Petersburg dropped their first points of the season at super-rich Anzhi. Despite taking the lead through Konstantin Zyryanov thanks to good work by Bystrov, Zenit were never able to have control on the match as they are so normally used to. Anzhi were level on sixty six minutes after Rasim Tagirbekov’s long throw was flicked on at the near post by Chris Samba and somehow managed to be squeezed in by Oleg Shatov at the far post. It was no more than Guus Hiddink’s side deserved as they battled hard without starman Samuel Eto’o. The return of Alan Dzagoev saw CSKA return to their fluid best with a convincing 3-0 win at Mordovia Saransk. Slutsky’s men made the breakthrough after half an hour through Zoran Tosic after being set up by Keisuke Honda. It was Dzagoev who affirmed the Red Army’s lead just before the break thanks to help from Rasmus Elm. Dzagoev turned provider for Latvian international Aleksandr Caunas to wrap up the three points on fifty seven minutes and secure the three points in what was seen as a tricky fixture for CSKA. Slaven Bilic’s Lokomotiv side returned to winning ways this week at struggling Volga who have now lost their last four matches. Despite being in control for the vast majority of the match, Lokomotiv failed to make thir dominance tell until well into the second half when Felipe Caicedo managed to give the away side the lead. Denis Glushakov confirmed the three points for Lokomotiv four minutes from time. Dan Petrescu was confirmed as the new Dinamo Moscow manager earlier this week but didn’t officially take over until Monday. This allowed him to have a first hand look at his new side when they met Terek Grozny. However, he must be far from pleased at what he saw as Dinamo were not only beaten by Terek Grozny but also showed a complete lack of discipline as both Vladimir Rykov and Kevin Kuranyi were dismissed. Maciej Rybus put Dinamo to the sword with an impressive brace. The first came on thirty minutes and for much after that Dinamo didn’t seem to have an answer. Yet Balasz Dzsudzsák did manage to equalise with just fifteen minutes left. However it was a familiar story for Dinamo when Rybus took advantage of some poor defending to ensure they haven’t taken a single point from their opening five matches. Kuban’ Krasnodar continued to show how inconsistent they are when they were beaten at Alaniya. The home side took the lead on thirty seven minutes via a penalty from Brazilian Danil Neco which also saw Alexandre Lolo sent off after receiving his second caution. It didn’t take long for Kuban’ to respond though and it was Spaniard Angel Dealbert who got the goal after some fine work from Ionov. However, the one man advantage told in the end and it was the Alaniya marksman Neco who got the winner just after the hour mark. Amkar Perm’ managed to go away to Krylya Sovetov and secure what was seen as a surprising three points. Young striker Nikita Burmistrov scored Amkar’s first after twenty-four minutes. Estonian international Konstantin Vassiljev (pictured right) secured the three points for the away side in injury time in the first half from the penalty spot. Krasnodar and Rostov played out the only goalless game of the weekend. The result ensures that Rostov still haven’t managed to win a game yet this season.

BARCA THRASH SOCIEDAD, CHAMPIONS ARE HELD BY VALENCIA

RESULTS Saturday 18th August Celta Vigo 0-1 Malaga Sevilla 2-1 Getafe Mallorca 2-1 Espanyol

Barcelona topped the table after a 5-1 spanking over Real Sociedad, but Real Madrid dropped points at home as Valencia hung on for a point at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid started their title defence with a dissapointing result against a strong Valencia side, the La Liga champions opened the scoring through Higuian on the tenth minute. Valencia ‘keeperm Alves saved the striker’s first two efforts but couldn’t stop the third, which was lashed into the roof of the net. It took the away side just half an hour to equalise, Jonas scored the goal to dampen the spirits at the Barnabeu. Valencia then fought hard in the second half to keep the likes of Ronaldo, Ozil and Higuain out and their hard work paid off as the side we rewarded with a point away to the champions. With the Real Madrid result confirmed, Barcelona had an extra bit of encouragement going into their game with Real Sociadad at the Camp Nou. The Vilanova era took a great start as Puyol headed home a corner after finding space in the penalty area just three minutes into the game. The Copa Del Rey winners were soon sat-back though, Gonzalo Castro thumped the ball into the net after being set up by Illarramendi, much to Phillipe Montanier’s delight. It was clear that this match was going to be a corker, just ten minutes in and the fans were gifted with the third goal of the game. This time it was none-other but Lionel Messi, after receiving the ball from Pedro, the little Argentine took the ball passed two defenders and place the ball into the top corner of the net. Just four minutes later saw the fourth goal, incredible scenes as Cristian Tello scuffed his cross towards Messi, who did the rest with a fine driving finish into the bottom corner of the goal. The goals then dried up until three minutes before half-time, Tello involved again in the build up as he crosses the ball far post for a number of Barca players, who were queing up to put the ball in the net, but Pedro got the final touch. Vilanova’s men really started playing some decent football in the second half, the team looked very comfortable and eventually got their fifth goal for the home supporters; David Villa scored on his return after playing a neat one-two with Iniesta, the striker then put the ball in the top corner from eight yards out. The opening game of the weekend saw Celta De Vigo take on Malaga, the away side have been in the news constantly recently with there problems off the field, but despite selling last season’s top scorer Santi Cazorla nd Salomon Rondon, Malaga took all three points at Estadio Balaidos. Record-breaking Fabrice Olinga gave Malaga a late winner to make the teenager the youngest scorer in La Liga, beating Athletic Bilbao’s Iker Muniain to the award. Next up saw Getafe take on Sevilla at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Before kick-off a minute’s silence was observed to commemorate Sevilla left-back Puerta, who died aged 22 after suffering cardiac arrest during this same fixture a week short of five years ago. Sevilla’s Fazio leaped in with a header past the keeper as a high ball in from Rakitic caused Havoc. Negredo doubled the home side’s lead as he rolled a penalty kick down the middle after a trip from Valera. Getafe pulled one back five minutes into the second half, Alexis was the scorer, who is on-loan from Sevilla, which resulted in muted celebrations from the defender. The final game on Saturday saw RCD Mallorca take on RCD Espanyol. Tomer Hemed scored at either end of the match to earn Mallorca a season-opening win over the away side. The Isreal international was on the spot after two minutes and then pounced on a stray ball with five remaining to render Mubarak Wakaso’s equaliser worthless. The highest scoring game of the weekend involved Athletico Bilbao and Real Betis, eight goals were scored at San Mames in Bilbao. With Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente looking set to leave Athletic before the end of the month, both Spanish internationals were left out by Marcelo Bielsa and their presence was missed as Betis soaked up Athletic's dominance in possession and broke with ease in the first period. The visitors had flown into a 3-0 lead after just half an hour thanks to calm finishes from Ruben Castro and Jorge Molina were followed up by a wonderful strike by Benat Extebarria. Although it was Athletic who stormed out of the traps after half-time when Oscar de Marcos reduced the arrears within 60 seconds of the restart. Mikel San Jose then twice headed home mfrom corners to bring the Basque side level but Betis were back in front four minutes later as substitute Jose Canas and Alex Pozuelo combined to allow the latter to slot home. With the Athletic defense all at sea, another fine counter-attack from the visitors saw Jonathon Pereira release Molina to seal the points with a delicate chip over Gorkra Iraizoz. Levante and Europa League champions Atletico Madrid started their respective La Liga campaigns with a point each at Cuidad de Valencia. Nabil El Zhar scored his first goal since joining Les Granotes last summer to put the hosts ahead on five minutes. Arda Turan levelled the scores 17 minutes later with a fizzing strike from outside the box. Falcao went close to winning the match for the visitors late on, but his athletic header landed narrowly wide. On Monday, the final three games of La Liga’s opening weekend took place, Deportivo La Coruna started the evening by beating Osasuna 1-0. Riki and Nelson Oliveira found the net for the home side, although Riki could have scored beforehand when Bruno Gama was brought down inside the area, but Riki put the resulting penalty wide. Depor secured the points in stoppage time as Oliveira scored from just inside the area. Rayo Vallecano edged a 1-0 victory at home to Granada CF after Roberto Trashorras struck a perfect free-kick over the wall and straight into the top corner. Granada manager Juan Antonio Anquela will be devastated considering the free-kick was virtually the last kick of the game. Real Zaragoza hosted the newly-promoted outfit of Real Valladolid in the final match of the weekend, Oscar Gonzales took the lead in the 45th minute for the away side, giving Zaragoza the second half to press and looks for a goal but the La Liga new-boys held on for all three points.

UKRAINIAN PREMIER LEAGUE - WEEK SIX

MKHITARYAN SENDS SHAKHTAR CLEAR

RESULTS Friday 17th August Arsenal Kiev 2-1 Illichivets

Shakhtar Donetsk’s 5-1 rout of Chernomorets Odessa on Sunday night sees them go three points clear of fierce rivals Dynamo Kiev at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League. Shakhtar’s star Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mhitaryan (pictured right) was once again brilliant. With his hat trick he has now scored an astonishing 10 goals in just six matches, four ahead of his nearest competitor. Shakhtar have been a class above the rest thus far this season, and this match once again demonstrated the gap in quality between the three time reigning champions and the much of the competition. The Brazilian duo of Teixeira and Willian also scored for the Hirnyky, whose scoring record thus far this season is 23 scored and just 3 conceded. The Odessa side, meanwhile, drop three spots to a tie for 10th place. Dynamo Kyiv dropped points for the first time this season in a 1-0 defeat on the road to Vorskla Poltava. Though prior to this match Dynamo had taken the maximum 15 points, their performances were hardly convincing. Syomin has had trouble integrating many of the new players into the squad, and these were problems were on full display Saturday night in Poltava. New signings Taye Taiwo and Raffael were poor, while Niko Kranjcar did not get any playing time despite starring in Dynamo’s victory last weekend. Credit must be given to Vorskla, who went ahead in the 25th minute through Gromov and defended fiercely for the rest of the 90 minutes, holding out for just their second victory of the season. But the pressure is increasing on Syomin to finally get Dynamo playing as a cohesive unit. Metalist Kharkiv got back to winning ways with a 3-0 demolishing on the road of bottom side Hoverla Uzhhorod. Metalist, the perennial third place finishers in the UPL behind the duo of Shakhtar and Dynamo, had been struggling this season and there have been rumours of unrest in the locker room. But this convincing display should ease the nerves of Metalist supporters. A brace from Cristaldo and another goal from Willian Gomes secured the three points for Metalist, who move up to 4th spot. Hoverla, meanwhile, sit pointless at the foot of the table. Though it’s only August, the battle to avoid relegation has begun. In Friday’s lone fixture Arsenal Kiev defeated Illichivets Mariupol’ 2-1. Maksim Shatskikh opened the scoring in the 11th minute to put the home side ahead, but Mariupol equalized via Okriashvili in the 26th. A late goal from Volodymyr Homenyuk brought the home side the victory, moving them up to into a tie for 5th place. Kryvbas and Dnipro played out the only scoreless draw of the 6th round. Ukraine’s friendly against the Czech Republic on Wednesday may have had an adverse effect on Dnipro; their star striker Roman Zozulya started for the national side but did not start here, perhaps due to fatigue. Kryvbas were impressive, and although they failed to score they threatened Dnipro’s goal on several occasions. Dnipro remain in 3rd place but gain ground on 2nd place Dynamo, while Kryvbas fall into a tie for 5th. Metalurh Donetsk and Tavriya drew 1-1 on Saturday night in Donetsk. Both sides have had their fair share of struggles this season, so this was a chance for both to potentially break into the top half of the table. Metalurh appeared to be headed for victory until Ukrainian national team midfielder Serhiy Nazarenko equalized for the visitors in the 89th minute, granting each side a share of the spoils. Karpaty Lviv defeated Metalurh Zaporizhya 2-1 at home to jump four spots up to 8th place. Pavlo Ksyonz and Oleksandr Kasyan put Karpaty up 2-0, and although Ivan Matyazh got one back for the visitors they could not find the equalizer. With just one point from six matches, Metalurh are early candidates for relegation. Volyn and Zorya played out a 2-2 draw in Lutsk on Sunday night. The home side will be very disappointed, as they let a 2-0 lead slip away late on, allowing Zorya to escape with a draw that will feel like a victory. Volyn eased off the pressure late and were punished by two goals in the final eight minutes, including a last minute equalizer.

PRIMERA DIVISIŐN TORNEO INICIAL – WEEK THREE

RACING TRIUMPH IN AVELLANEDA CLÁSICO

RESULTS Saturday 18th August Boca Juniors 3-1 All Boys Colón 2-2 Belgrano San Lorenzo 0-1 Estudiantes Sunday 19th August Racing Club 2-0 Independiente Godoy Cruz 2-0 Atlético Rafaela Vélez Sarsfield 0-2 Lanús Tigre 2-3 River Plate

Following Argentina’s mid-week 3-1 friendly victory against Germany, round three of the Inicial served up the first big derby of the season as Racing took on Independiente in the clásico de Avellaneda. Jose Sand opened the scoring with his first of the season after half an hour following Gabriel Hauche’s cut back. Independiente’s day got worse as left-back Claudio Morel was sent off for a second bookable offence just before half-time. Things didn’t get any better as Sand doubled his tally after great persistence from Hauche and youngster Ricardo Centurion – both of who were fantastic throughout – to seal the victory for La Academia. Sand whipped off his shirt in a Balotelli-esque celebration as an affront to those who labelled him ‘fat’. Racing now sit joint top while Independiente remain winless and have STILL yet to score. Topping the table going into round three, Colon had to come back from two goals to draw 2-2 against an unbeaten Belgrano side. Belgrano got off to a flying start when ‘Chiqui’ Perez coolly converted from the penalty spot and then an unmarked Cesar Carranza swept home Guillermo Farre’s cross to make in 2-0 after just 12 minutes. Colon responded with Facundo Curuchet reacting quickly after Gigliotti’s shot was saved by Olave and got their equaliser when Sergio Rodriguez sliced a clearance into his own net. The game was marred by violence when Belgrano fans clashed with local police. Guillermo Burdisso continued his fantastic record of having scored on each of his debuts as Boca beat All Boys 3-1. The centre back rose highest to head home Juan Sanchez Miño’s free kick in the second minute. Ivan Borghello levelled the tie after his diving header diverted JP Rodriguez’s driven free-kick into the roof of the net. It was yet another set piece that put Boca back ahead, Santiago Silva this time nodding in Pochi Chavez’s free kick. Shortly after the break, Tanque Silva slammed home his second after combining well with fellow baldy Clemente Rodriguez. River also emerged victorious in one of the week’s most exciting games, edging Tigre 3-2 on Sunday. Keko Villalva took full advantage of Trezeguet’s absence to fire River ahead and Carlos Sanchez put the visitors two up, heading home at the back post from Rogelio Funes Mori’s dinked cross. Tigre clawed one back with Lucas Orban scoring against his parent club – the ‘Law of the Ex’ as it’s known – four minutes later. River began the second half as they had the first, Manuel Lanzini scoring within 30 seconds after more good work by Funes Mori. An uncharacteristic error from Marcelo Barovero allowed Diego Ftacla to pull one back for Tigre on the hour mark but el Matador couldn’t find an equaliser, although they should have had a blatant penalty late on. Tigre have now lost three on the bounce but have been unfortunate against top opposition and should take some heart. Godoy Cruz went level at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Atletico Rafaela. Mauro Obolo scored his first goal for the club after five minutes and young left back Emanuel Insua put daylight between the two on the cusp of half time, guiding in the rebound after Facundo Castillon’s shot was saved by Guillermo Sara. Lanus got their first win of the season with a 2-0 win away at Velez. Substitute Mauricio Pereyra slide in for the first after Gonzalo Castillejos saw his effort come off the bar. Victor Ayala ensured Granate’s win on 82 minutes as he thundered in a 25 yard bullet. Estudiantes continued their solid start to the season with a 1-0 win against San Lorenzo. Roman Martinez grabbed the only goal of the game, poking home Duvan Zapata’s flicked header. Monday’s fixtures began with Quilmes hosting Union de Santa Fe in a 2-1 win for the home side. Pablo Lima put the Cervecero ahead but Juan Pablo Avendaño equalised soon after. The game was heading for a drawn until Joel Carli got the winner ten minutes from time and continued a fine start for the promoted side. In another entertaining game, Argentinos Jnrs collected their first point of the season with a 2-2 draw away at Arsenal. Talented centre back Lisandro Lopez’s header put Arsenal ahead but a second half strike from veteran Diego Placente and an own goal by Hugo Nervo gave Argentinos a surprise lead. It didn’t last long though, Dario Benedetto capitalising on some slack marking to tie a game that could have gone either way. In the last game of the week Newell’s defeated San Martin 2 –0. A Marcos Caceres header put la Lepra ahead but then had Victor Lopez was sent off after just 21 minutes. Gabriel Heinze, making his first appearance, replaced him but San Martin’s challenge never really arrived. Ignacio Scocco saved the best til last when his thirty-odd yard wonderstrike – an early goal of the season contender - flew into the top corner to wrap up the points. Pointless San Martin remain bottom of the table.

SUPER-SUB BEROLA HELPS MINEIRO PULL AWAY League leaders Atletico Mineiro came from behind to beat Botafogo 3-2 and go three points clear at the summit. Luiz Andrezinho's 36th-minute goal gave the visitors the lead but Damian Escudero levelled two minutes before half-time and Jo put the leaders ahead nine minutes after the restart. Although Andrezinho levelled with an 81st-minute penalty, substitute Neto Berola grabbed the winner a minute from time. On Thursday, Mineiro did slip up away to Atletico-GO drawing with the strugglers 1-1. Goianiense went into the game bottom but stunned the leaders with a tenth minute goal from Dias Luz Ernandes. However, the hosts had Macedo Joilson sent off 11 minutes later and within seven minutes Caldeira Bernard levelled. Second-placed Fluminense failed to take advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cruzeiro on Wednesday. Wellington gave the hosts a third-minute lead but Fred rescued a point for Fluminense two minutes before half-time in a game which saw Cruzeiro's Charles and Fluminense substitute Matheus Carvalho dismissed in the 72nd minute. Flu then edged a victory over Sport Recife on Saturday. The visitors had Tobi sent off 11 minutes from time and Fluminense made them pay four minutes later when Samuel Goncalves netted the only goal of the game. Third-placed Vasco da Gama slipped up twice in a week first drawing on Friday at home to Coritiba and losing to a 39th-minute Vagner Love goal at Flamengo on Sunday. It was dramatic finish on Friday evening. Junior Urso gave the visitors the lead but Felipe equalised four minutes into the second half and Wendel appeared to have won it for Vasco a minute from time, only for Everton Ribeiro to level in the final minute. Gremio moved to within a point of Vasco with a 4-0 drubbing of bottom club Figueirense. Elano broke the deadlock and Leandro netted either side of the break, before Andre Lima wrapped up the scoring a minute from the end. Coritiba were also 4-0 winners, with Lucas Mendes, Ayrton, Roberto and substitute Anderson Aquino netting in the defeat of Cruzeiro. Atletico Goianiense moved off the bottom with a 2-1 defeat of Palmeiras on Sunday, with Eron and Raylan netting either side of a Hernan Barcos goal. Santos edged Corinthians 3-2, with Andre (2) and Bruno Rodrigo on target and Danilo and Juan Manuel Martinez replying for the visitors. Portuguesa and Internacional drew 1-1 in the other game. Substitute Juan put Internacional ahead 15 minutes from time but Marcelo Cordeiro earned the hosts a point with an 82nd-minute goal. Sao Paulo brushed aside Ponte Preta 3-0 to climb two places to sixth. Veteran goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute and four minutes later Rodrigues Lucas doubled the lead, before substitute Osvaldo completed the scoring in the 86th minute. Luis Martinez's 89th-minute goal gave Nautico a 1-0 win over Bahia. Santos came from behind to beat Figueirense 3-1 and move away from the lower reaches of the Campeonato standings. Both teams had a player sent off in the first half, with Santos losing Junior Juan in the 11th minute and Tulio seeing red for the hosts five minutes before half-time. Rodrigo Fernandes gave Figueirense, the bottom club, the lead in the 49th minute, but Santos responded in style. MEXICAN PRIMERA DIVISION APERTURA – WEEK FIVE

TOLUCA MAINTAIN PERFECT START

RESULTS Friday 17th August Tijuana 2-1 Tigres UANL

Substitute Edgar Benitez (pictured right) scored a last gasp winner to keep Toluca on top and maintain their fabulous start to the Apertura. America won big, destroying struggling Queretaro 4-0 whilst Club Leon managed a point to keep them in second place. Champions Santos continue to falter, falling at home to Emanuel Villa’s double for Pumas UNAM, whilst Morelia’s victory moves them to sixth.

Saturday 18th August Morelia 3-0 Puebla Cruz Azul 1-1 Club Leon Queretaro 0-4 America

Toluca left it late to snatch all three points as Hugo Sanchez brought his charges to the Estadio Nemesio Diez in the final game of the weekend. However, the score line perhaps flattered his side as Toluca spurned numerous chances to take the lead in the second half. In the end though it was the result that mattered and second half substitute Edgar Benitez made himself the hero, rounding Rodolfo Cota before slotting home and sending the home crowd into delirium whilst maintaining their 100% record as they sit aloft Liga MX after week five. America MX were the big winners, smashing four past bottom side Queretaro at Estadio La Corregidora. Christian Benitez opened the scoring after just 10 minutes as he rounded the keeper and the lead was doubled by Daniel Montenegro with just a quarter of the game gone. Rubens Sambueza ended the game as a content with the third on the half hour as his free kick found the top corner. Christian Bermudez added a late fourth to tie up a convincing victory for the Águilas. Morelia moved up to sixth spot with victory over visiting Puebla. Joao Rojas hit the opener, tapping home from close range. Carlos Morales’ superb free-kick doubled their lead in the dying moments of the first half. With just over 10 minutes to play the points were secured as Miguel Sabah reacted first to stab home after Carlos Morales’s free kick deflected straight into his path. Two first half goals were enough for Tijuana as they saw off UANL Tigres at Estadio Caliente. Alfredo Moreno gave the home side the advantage on the quarter hour as his swivel and volley from the edge of the area beat the outstretched arm of Enrique Palos. Fernando Arce doubled the lead just after the half hour mark as he nodded home from 6 yards as Palos fumbled. UANL Tigres gave themselves a glimmer of hour with 25 minutes remaining, Elias Hernandez finding space to thump home a back post volley, but Los Perros Aztecas held on for the points. Club Leon remain unbeaten in their promotion campaign, after earning a share of the spoils as they visited Cruz Azul. The visitors, who are enjoying a terrific start to the season took the lead with just 20 minutes remaining through Luis Montes. The on-loan Pachuca midfielder calmly finishing off a flowing team move. But the home side grabbed a point five minutes later as Pablo Barrera’s speculative 40 yard free kick deceived Edgar Hernandez and found the top corner. Current champions Santos Laguna are struggling to find their title winning form and Pumas UNAM capitalised by running victorious at TSM Corona. Emanuel Villa broke the deadlock after half an hour, finding room superbly before firing across the keeper into the bottom right hand corner. The argentine made it two immediately after half time. His header from Efrain Velarde’s corner was too much for Oswaldo Sanchez to keep out. Daniel Luduena pulled one back for the hosts’ but it was not enough and Pumas returned to the capital with all three points. Youngster Carlos Fierro (pictured below right) was the hero for Guadalajara as the substitute took just three minutes to make an impact which stole the points for his side. Both sides had numerous chances but spurned their opportunities as both goalkeepers were called into action. It wasn’t until the 83rd minute when Fierro, just on as a sub was left unmarked six yards out to head home his first of the season which was also his side’s first victory of the new campaign. Atlas entertained Chiapas at Estadio Jalisco on Saturday, with the vistors looking to record their first points of the season. However it was the home side who struck first, Sergio Santana getting the merest of touches on a freekick to deceive Fabián Villaseñor in the Jaguares goal. The visitor’s, who had Mariano Trujillo dismissed just before the final whistle had Franco Arizala to thank for rescuing a point. After doing well to keep his feet on a slippery surface, his right foot strike whistled into the bottom corner from 20 yards. Atlante left it late to snare a point at Monterrey in front of 33,000 at Estadio Tecnologico. Jorge Guagua’s 22nd minute own goal looked like it was going to hand the home side all three points, but despite Luis Venegas’ 75th minute dismissal the visitors struck back. After Hiram Mier fouled Esteban Pardes inside the area, Osvaldo Martinez made no mistake from the spot to silence the home crowd and earn his team a share of the spoils.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER - WEEK TWENTY-FOUR

IMPACT SHOCK SAN JOSE

RESULTS Thursday 16th August Columbus Crew 1-1 LA Galaxy Toronto FC 2-2 Portland Timbers Vancouver Whitecaps 0-2 FC Dallas

Another week of MLS packed with the usual drama, liquid football and stunning goals, Sporting Kansas City retained top spot in the Eastern Conference for another week, Earthquakes stay top again in the Western Conference and yet again Timbers and Toronto are bottom in both divisions.

Saturday 18th August Seattle Sounders 2- 0 Vancouver Whitecaps Toronto FC 0-1 Sporting Kansas City Sunday 19th August Montreal Impact 3-1 San Jose Earthquakes Chicago Fire 2-1 New England Revolution Real Salt Lake 1-2 FC Dallas Colorado Rapids 1-1 Chivas USA DC United 1-1 Philadelphia Union

The first game of the week was between Columbus Crew and LA Galaxy, ending in a 1-1 draw. Julio Arrieta opened the scoring for the home side just after half time, before Robbie Keane cancelled out the early striker with a goal in the 63rd minute, after good work from Sean Franklin down the right, a good away point for Galaxy to be fair. The two bottom sides in both leagues met at BMO Field, Toronto FC playing out a 2-2 draw with Portland Timbers. The away side took the lead in the 20th minute, Sal Zizzo with the tap in the six-yard box.Eric Hassli levelled things up in the 56th minute, opening his Toronto account in the process. Then moments later Toronto lead, thanks to Luis Silva’s goal. But each side ended the game with a point each as Darlington Nagbe scored a late equaliser in the 82nd minute. FC Dallas continued to climb up the table, with a 2-0 away win against Vancouver Whitecaps. Two second-half strikes from Fabian Castillo and a 1st career goal for Jonathan Top handed Dallas their 7th win of the season. Vancouver Whitecaps had a chance to put things right after suffering a 2-0 defeat earlier in the week, but instead they were beaten by Seattle Sounders by the same scoreline. The first goal came in the 63rd minute, Freddy Montero pouncing in the area. Eddie Johnson wrapped up the win four minutes from time with a simple finish, Whitecaps endure their second defeat of the week. League leaders Sporting Kansas City travelled to Toronto FC and stayed top for another week, after beating the Canadian based side 1-0. The game was fairly even, but in the 82nd minute, City made a breakthrough courtesy of Kei Kamara, who netted his 9th goal of the season. Montreal Impact registered their 11th win of the campaign and there couldn’t of been a better game to grab it, winning 3-1 against league leaders San Jose Earthquakes. They went behind in the 22nd minute, Chris Wondolowski converting from the spot to give Earthquakes the lead. It didn’t last long though as minutes later Impact were level, Marco Di Vaio scoring from close range from Felipe’s cross. Then in the 60 th minute, Impact took the lead through Lamar Neagle’s 20 yard curling effort. Patrice Bernier grabbed a third from a penalty after Hernandez brought down Di Vaio, a memorable win for Impact. Chicago Fire cemented their place in the play-offs and climbed above Houston Dynamo for the time being after they defeated New England Revolution at Toyota Park. In the early stages Fire opening the scoring, Chris Rolfe putting away his penalty after he was fouled in the box. New England equalised in the 10 th minute, Fernando Cardenas eventually finding the net. But a first MLS goal for Sherjill MacDonald in the 24 th minute, proved to be the difference between the two sides and Fire held on for the win. Real Salt Lake failed to close the gap on San Jose Earthquakes, as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against FC Dallas. Fabian Castillo made it 1-0 in the 60th minute, latching on to a pass from David Ferreira and calmly slotting his chance away. 15 minutes later Salt Lake tied it up, Alvario Saborio with a header from Morales’s corner. As the game was looking like resulting in a draw, Dallas snatched the win, they broke away and David Ferreira blasted past Nick Rimando. Colorado Rapids entertained Chivas USA at Dick’s Sporting Good’s park, the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Brian Mullan gave Rapids the lead in the 18th minute, stealing possession and firing a shot into the far corner. Seven minutes from time former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel rescued a point for Chivas and ensured Chivas stayed above Rapids. D.C United remain on course for a place in the play-offs, courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union. Brian Carroll netted the first goal of the game in the 7th minute, before Okugo headed into his own net so both sides shared the points. New York Red Bulls provided us with the come-back of the week, coming from 2-0 down to beat Portland Timbers 3-2. Goals from Bright Dike and Darlington Nagbe gave Timbers a shock 2-0 lead, appearing that the game was over. But it wasn’t. Before half-time Red Bulls pulled one back through Kenny Cooper and new signing Tim Cahill struck a controversial equaliser. Then with just under 10 minutes remaining, Jan Gunnar Solli sent in an inviting cross and it was met by Heath Pearce, who headed the ball down into the ground for the winner. The penultimate game of the week was between Houston Dynamo and Columbus Crew, the result was a 2-2 draw. Brad Davis put Houston infront on 18 minutes, smashing the ball into the top corner. Columbus replied through Cole Grossman, who netted a first career goal. Columbus then followed it up with another goal, Eddie Gaven finishing of a swift counter attack. Adam Moffat then hit a shot from distance that was too hot to handle for Andy Gruenebaum, earning Houston a point.

ATALANTA

BOLOGNA

INS: Riccardo Cazzola (Juve Stubia), Luca Cigarini (Napoli (loan)), Alessandro De Leidi (Foggia), Davide Brivio (Lecce), Carlos Matheu (Independiente), Facundo Manuel Carlos Parra (Independiente (Loan)), Facundo OUTS: Guglielmo Stendardo (Lazio), Alberto Almici (Lanciano), Simone Colombi (Modena), Matteo Ardemagni (Modena), Marcello Possenti (Lumezzane), Nicola Malaccari (AS Gubbio), Davide Zappacosta (Avellino), Migjen Basha (Torino), Emanuele Suagher (Pisa), Daniele Baselli (Cittadella)

INS: Alessandro Marchi (Piacenza), Marti Riverola (Barcelona), Robert Acquafresca (Genoa), Cristian Pasquato (Udinese), Francesco Finocchio (Parma), Gianluca Curci (Roma), Mathias Abero (Nacional Ascuncion), Marco Motta (Juventus), Tiberio Guarente (Sevilla), Cesara Natali (Fiorentina), Umunegby Kingsley (AC Milan) OUTS: Marco Di Vaio (Montreal), Andrea Raggi (Monaco), Loria (released), Bernacci (released), Federico Rodriguez (Genoa), Riccardo Casini (Parma), Jean-Francois Gillet (Torino), Matteo Rubin (Torino), Jose Angel Crespo (Verona), Andrea Ingegneri (Foligno), Giacomo Venturi (AS Gubbio), Manuel Gavilan (Nocerina), Gaby Mudingayi (Inter)

In their first season back in Serie A last year Atalanta didn’t do too badly with a 12th placed finish. This is a little bit misrepresentative though since the side, based in Bergamo, were handed a 6 point deduction at the start of last season for their part in an alleged match fixing scandal. Without the deduction they would’ve indeed finished in 9th place. They seemingly struggled for goals at times last season, particularly away from striker German Denis (who bagged 16 Serie A goals last season while on loan at Atalanta), yet their final goal difference of -2 underlines their fair defensive steel. They can potentially do a little better this year but a mid-table finish could well be the same again. Defender Andrea Masiello’s 26 month ban for his involvement in the Scommessopoli scandal could mar the team’s season yet only time will tell if it will have a negative effect on the team.

Bologna did well to finish 9th last season but unfortunately their success has kind of come back to bite them. A host of their stars from last season have left including top goalscorer Marco Di Vaio while Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez (at the time of writing) is still their player but has been linked strongly with a move to the Premier League. Again Italy international Alessandro Diamanti will be vital for them. They have made a host of signings yet it is unlikely these players will be able to perform to quite the level the side achieved last time out. Some have tipped Bologna for a relegation battle but I feel due to the lack of cohesion of some of the teams promoted, along with the Diamanti factor they will be able to stave off one of those relegation battles.

CAGLIARI

CATANIA

INS: Luca Rossettini (Siena), Daniele Dessena (Sampdoria), Mauricio Pinilla (Palermo), Thiago Ribero (Rentistas), Danilo Avelar (Karpaty Lviv), Andrea Cocco (Albinoleffe), Daniele Ragatzu (AS Gubbio), Vincenzo Camilleri (Reggina) OUTS: Paolo Dametto (Lumezzane), Michele Pisanu( Virtus), Michele Canini (Genoa), Daniele Giorico (Lumezzane), Simone Gozzi (Modena FC), Mauro Vigorito (Lumezzane), Marco Mancosu (Benevento)

INS: Amidu Salifu (Fiorentina), Takayuki Morimoto (Novara), Mariano Andujar (Estudiantes La Plata), Fabio Sciacca (Grosseto), Alberto Frison (Vicenza), Mirko Antenucci (Torino), Raphael Martinho (Cesena), Lucas Castro (Racing Club) OUTS: Suazo (released), Andrea Campagnolo (released then Siena), Tomas Kosicky (Novara), Raffaele Imparato (Vicenza), Maxi Lopez (Sampdoria), Alfredo Donnarumma (Como), Raphael Martinho (Verona on loan), Tom (Koper), Juan Pablo Carrizo (Lazio after loan ended)

Even though they finished last season in pretty poor form they did enough to stay in Italy’s top flight. Midfielder Conti, who despite being more defensively minded, chipped in with 4 goals and 5 assists last season and his experience will be vital again this year. CAM Cossu will need to score more for the team to help them steer clear of the dreaded drop zone though the acquisition of striker Sau could help them not to be as low scoring as last season. They have certainly lost some players but might just be ok this season with comfortable (just) safety.

Catania finished 11th in 2011/2012 yet a finish just below this will probably be likely this season. When I asked Waleed about the relegation candidates he said that Serie A expert @FrancesCalcio believes it will be “Pescara, Torino, and Catania for relegation this year. “ Surprising he picks Catania perhaps, though it is possible a bad run could really drag them into the places near the bottom. The front 3 of Barrientos, Bergessio and Gomez isn’t too bad; even if they did only score 15 goals between them last season. Yet again midfielder Francesco Lodi, scorer of 9 Serie A goals last season will be of huge importance to the Sicilians.

CHIEVO

FIORENTINA

INS: Paul Papp (Vaslui), Diego Farias (Nocerina), Salvatore Papa (Foligno), Filippo Fondi (Lumezzane), Pavol Farkas (Vaslui), Lorenzo Marchionni (Ascoli), Roberto Guana (Cesena), Isaac Cofie (Genoa), David Di Michele (Lecce), Adrian Stoian (Roma), Marco Rigoni (Novara), Simo Bentivoglio (Padova), Francesco Dettori (Cremonese), Sergio Viotti (Grosseto), Dario Dainelli (Genoa) OUTS: Francesco Acerbi (AC Milan), Tallo (Roma), Francesco Bonato (Venezia), Massimo Zamparo (Lumezzane), Marco Migliorini (Torino), Manuel Lori (Cesena), Yonese Hanine (Ascoli), Marco Silvestri (Padova), Jacopo Coletta (Lumezzane), Radoslav Kirilov (Lumezzane), Domenico Franco (Paganese), Michael Bradley (Roma), Simone Grippo (Servette FC), Pablo Granoche (Padova), Diego Farias (Padova), Marcello Falzerano (Grosseto ), Ivan Fatic (Verona), Fernando Uribe (Atletico Nacional), Ledian Memushak (Lecce), Antimo Iunco (AS Bari), Amadou Samb (Lumezzane), Raffaele Pucino (Varese), Davide Mandelli (Lumezzane)

INS: Ahmed Hegazy (El-Ismaily), Khouma Babacar (Racing Santander), Facundo Roncaglia (Boca Juniors), Mattia Cassani (Palermo), Mounir El Hamdaoui (Ajax), Cristiano Lupatelli (Genoa), Juan Cuadrado (Udinese), Matias Fernandez (Sporting Lisbon), Francesco Della Rocca (Palermo), Emiliano Viviano (Palermo), Borja Valero (Villareal), Gonzalo Rodriguez (Fiorentina), Alberto Aquilani (Liverpool), David Pizarro (Roma) OUTS: Riccardo Montolivo (AC Milan), Amidu Salify (Catania), Houssine Kharja (Al Arabi), Edoardo Pazzagli (AC Milan), Ryder Matos (Bahia), Amauri (Parma), Cristiano Piccini (Spezia), Daniel Kofi Agyei (Juve Stabia), Paolo Rozzio (Pisa), Luca Bittante (Avellino), Khouma Babacar (Padova), Michel Panatti (Avellino), Lorenzo De Silvestri (Sampdoria), Valon Behrami (Napoli), Alessandro Gamberini (Napoli), Mirko Barbero (Pistoiese), Cesare Natali (Bologna), Niccolo Mandredini (Modena FC), Boadu Acosty (Juve Stabia), Gustavo Campanharo (Juventude), Nikola Gulan (Modena FC)

A 10th placed finish for the ‘Flying Donkeys’ was deserved last season, although they did score the 2nd least amount of goals in Serie A with 35 goals, surpassing only bottom club Cesena’s effort of 24 goals. They were hugely defensively minded last season under manager Domenico Di Carlo relying on counter attacks for goals and this will be the case again this season. They are almost undoubtedly going to do slightly worse this season with the departure of Michael Bradley to Roma looking set to cost them. Veteran striker Sergio Pelissier, who scored 8 goals last season, will be relied upon again up front along with new signing Di Michele, an acquisition from Lecce.

The past few seasons have ended with mid-table obscurity for Fiorentina and that trend looks set to continue this season. Stevan Jovetic has been carrying the Viola’s a little recently, with the Montenegran scoring 14 times in Serie A last term. Three new central midfielders; Aquilani, Borja Valero and Della Rocca will provide some quality in the midfield trio . Aquilani, a signing for Liverpool could really sparkle now his horrible tenure at Anfield has ended even if he is just a replacement for Riccardo Montolivo whose contract ended. Fiorentina’s level of success in the 2012/2013 campaign obviously depends largely on whether Jovetic decides to stay at the club. He’s been heavily linked with a 30 million Euros move to Juventus, as well as a move to Chelsea. If he were to go Fiorentina would miss him. Simple. If he does go though it is unlikely their midtable standing will be threatened. The investment of that money could be vital, yet even if it is not reinvested this summer Fiorentina will most probably still finish in mid-table, with that warm, cosy mid-table feeling but they could well do a little better.

GENOA INS: Steve Von Bergen (Cesena), Daniel Tozser (Genk), Federico Rodriguez (Bologna), Dejan Lazarevic (Padova), Giacomo Bindi (Crotone), Diogo Rosado (Sporting Lisbon), Michele Canini (Cagliari), Anselmo de Moraes (Palmeiras), Anrea Bertolacci (Roma), Julian Velazquez (Independiente), Giammario Piscitella (Roma), Valerio Verre (Roma) OUTS: Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Werder Bremen), Rodrigo Palacio (Inter), Kevin Constant (AC Milan), Samuele Longo (Inter), Louise Parfait (Cesena), Matteo Chinellato (AC Milan), Robert Aquafresca (Bologna), Andrea Caracciolo (Brescia), Selim Ben Djemia (Astra Ploiseti), Mattia Destro (Siena), Eduardo Carvalho (Istanbul BB), Davide Bertonici (Frosinone), Miguel Veloso (Dynamo Kiev), Antionio Caracciolo (Brescia), Mattia Bani (Reggiana 1919), Isacc Cofie (Chievo), Chico (Swansea City), Luca Miracoli (Varese), Cristiano Lupatelli (Fiorentina), Andrea Doninelli (Juve Stabia), Richmond Boakye (Juventus), Sebastian Ribas (Monaco), Nicola Pasini (Spezia), Riccardo Improta (AS Gubbio), Alessio Grea (AS Gubbio), Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Roma), Stefano Sturaro (Modena FC), Kevin Vinetot (Crotone), Mattia Perin (Pescara), Antonio Ragusa (Pescara), Magnus Troest (Varese), Dario Dainelli (Chievo), Masahudu Alhassan (Novara)

Although they ended up finishing six points clear of relegation, thanks to two wins in the last three games, it was a nervy season last season for Il Grifone. The unforgettable confrontation with their ultras certainly brought a lot of attention to Genoa. They should improve on 17th this season however. Losing star striker Rodrigo Palacio, scorer of a whopping 19 Serie A goals last season, to Inter will cost them- as will the loss of Chico-yet the acquisition of Ciro Immobile (an Italian Under-21 international) from Juventus is an inspired one. Unproven in Serie A he may be but Immobile could well be the young star of Serie A this coming season. Goals will probably not be a problem for Genoa, particularly if Immobile and Alberto Gilardino can somehow fit together. Bringing in two new centre backs may help them defensively. Barring a disaster Genoa should just have enough to stay in Serie A. Waleed believes “Genoa won’t struggle this year, they’ll do fine”

INTER INS: Andrea Poli (Sampdoria), Fredy Guarin (Porto), Rodrigo Palacio (Genoa), Samuele Longo (Genoa), Francesco Bardi (Livorno), Matias Silvestre (Palermo), Samir Handanovic (Udinese), Gaby Mudingayi (Bologna) OUTS: Sulley Muntari (AC Milan), Goran Pandev (Napoli), Cristiano Biraghi (Cittadella), Lucio (Juventus), Simone Benedetti (Spezia), Diego Forlan (Internacional), Luca Caldirola (Cesena), Lorenzo Crisetig (Spezia), Marco Faraoni (Udinese), Enrico Alfonso (Cremonese), Francesco Bardi (Novara), Luca Tremolada (Como), Gaetano Monachello (Metalurh Donetsk), Antonio Esposito (Treviso), Denis Alibec (Vitorual Constanta), Marek Kysela (Jablonec), Luc Castaignos (Twente), Jakub Votjus (Zagreb)

Finishing sixth was disappointing to say the least for Inter last season, despite their obvious limitations. They’ve certainly splashed the cash to secure success this season signing some vital players such as Handanovic and Palacio. I asked Waleed how he feels Inter will get on next year and this is what he said: “I’m not the only who believes the Inter will be the surprise of the season this year. Stramaccioni is not confused at all, he knows what he wants and he knows who can help him achieve his goals. When he took over last season as the season was ending and Inter were already in a bad place, he failed to prove that he’s worthy of the job as he didn’t have what he wanted. This year, he has what he wants and I truly believe he will demonstrate why a bright young coach like him has the potential to be one of the world’s best. Inter are looking more of a strong team now from what I see in their pre-season trainings and matches. I really think that they can finish in any place in the top three this year.” So with Juventus otherwise engaged in the Champions League (Inter are in the Europa League but only time will tell how seriously they take it), Inter might just win the Scudetto.

JUVENTUS INS: Sebastian Giovinco (Parma), Raffaele Alcibiade (Nocerina), Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Mauricio Isla (Udinese), Nicola Leali (Brescia), Kwadwo Asamoah (Udinese), Lucio (Inter), Richmond Boakye (Genoa), Vykintas Slivka (Ekranas Panevezys) OUTS: Filippo Boniperti (Empoli), Raman Chibsah (Parma), Cristian Pasquato (Udinese), Alberto Libetazzi (Novara), Eljero Elia (Werder Bremen), Leonardo Spinazzola (Empoli), Nazzareno Belfasti (Modena FC), Marco Motta (Bologna), Milos Krasic (Fenerbache), Luca Castiglia (Vicenza), Felipe Melo (Galatasaray)

Juve’ were exceptional last season; claiming the Scudetto while remaining unbeaten all season. I asked Waleed if he thought it was hard to look past Juventus retaining their title and his thoughts were pretty decisive: “Juve will most probably retain their title as they are stronger than all other sides at the moment. They’ve been brilliant with transfers too in order to have depth and have a strong squad as they will be competing in Europe this year too, they’ve managed to sign Asamoah, Isla, Lucio, Boakye, Leali, Masi, and Pogba. Juve also signed Caceres who was on loan and Giaccherini and Giovinco who were on co-ownership. They are favourites but it all depends on what happens to Antonio Conte with Calcioscommesse, there are reports he'll accept a three month suspension in a plea deal which might harm Juve’s campaign. I really think Inter and Roma could be the new challengers for Juventus this season.” Since this was written, Conte has been given a ten month suspension which, as Waleed points out, could seriously affect their chances of winning the league.

LAZIO INS: Riccardo Perpetuini (Foggia), Antonio Cinelli (Sassuolo), Ederson (Lyon), Lorenzo Cinque (Mantova), Guglielmo Stendardo (Atalanta), Juan Pablo Carrizo (Catania), Thomas Strakosha (Panionios) OUTS: Alessandro Tuia (Salernitana), Seyi Adeleke (Salernitana), Emilson Cribari (Rangers)

The doctor has come in to improve the health of Lazio, although they are already in pretty good health. The appointment of Vladimir Petkovic was a surprising one, yet a promising one, so far! He’s been able to keep all the side’s big players and has brought in no less than nine players to strengthen the squad. Lazio should play in a 4-3-2-1 formation with new signings Ederson and Zarate; from Lione (though on a free) and Inter respectively set to play behind Miroslav Klose in attack. It is well know that despite his age Klose is still one of the best finishers in Serie A, if not one of the best in Europe. Understandably they want to be challenging for the league sometime soon; you just can’t see it happening this season though. Lazio will want to build on their fourth last season but it’s not hard to see them finishing a little lower down the pecking order due to the strength of others. Champions League football may just be out of the question but they would want to secure some form of European football at least.

MILAN INS: Sulley Muntari (Inter), Bakaye Traore (AS Nancy), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Gabriel (Cruzeiro), Kevin Constant (Genoa), Francesco Acerbi (Chievo), Mattia Valoti (Albinoleffe), Matteo Chinellato (Genoa), Edoardo Pazzagli (Fiorentina), Cristian Zapata (Villarreal) OUTS: Mark Van Bommel (PSV Eindhoven), Gennaro Gattuso (Sion), Dominic Adiyiah (Arsenal Kyiv), Michal Miskiewicz (Wisla Krakow), Clarence Seedorf (Botafogo), Gianmario Comi (Reggina), Alessandro Nesta (Montreal Impact), Nmandi Oduamadi (Varese), Maroco Fossati (Ascoli), Marco Baldan (Nocerina), Thiago Silva (Paris Saint-Germain), Ricardo Ferreira (Empoli), Davide Di Gennaro (Spezia), Luca Ghiringhelli (Novara), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris Saint-Germain), Flavio Roma (Monaco), Marcus Diniz (Lecce), Filippo Perucchini (Como), Uros Palibrik (SK Lierse), Didac Vila (Valencia), Umunegby Kingsley (Bologna), Taye Taiwo (Dynamo Kyiv), Michelangelo Albertazzi (Verona)

Milan, Milan, Milan. They won more games than Champions Juventus last season but finished second. They’ve cashed in no doubt this summer, taking a different view on transfers to city rivals Inter. The sales of Ibrahimović and Silva have saved the club over €40M in wages and given them over €65M in transfer fees; which could prove vital in the era of UEFA Financial Fair Play. I asked Waleed how he thinks Milan will get on this season and if he thinks the high profile sales and release of experienced players was worth it to cash in: “We will witness a lot of changes for Milan this year. It’s like going back to square one for the Rossoneri as club legends such as Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf and Gennaro Gattuso have all left last season. In addition, Milan’s best defender and striker Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic respectively joining PSG destroyed all hopes Milan fans had for taking the Scudetto title to San Siro. They were key players and their importance for the team cannot be doubted. As my friend Francesco (@FRANCESCalciO) have also noted: locker room wise, Ambrosini and Abbiati are the only leaders left, other players now have to step up into leadership roles out of nowhere like Daniele Bonera and Luca Antonini. We can’t see if cashing it was worth it for Milan but we do know for sure that they trying to set the club right going to the Financial Fair Play era with a healthy bill.”

NAPOLI INS: Goran Pandev (Inter), Davide Bariti (Vicenza), Valon Behrami (Fiorentina), Alessandro Gamberini (Fiorentina) OUTS: Ezequiel Lavezzi (Paris Saint-Germain), Christian Chavez (San Lorenzo), Luca Cigarini (Atalanta), Fabiano Santacroce (Parma), Mario Santana (Torino), Ignacio Fideleff (Parma), Nicolao Dumitru (Termana), Erwin Hoffer (Eintracht Frankfurt), Luigi Vitale (Termana), Massimiliano Ammendola (Botev Vratsa)

A fifth placed finish for Napoli last season was softened a little by their exploits in the Champions League but they will still be disappointed to finish in the Europa League places last season. They will be sad to see Lavezzi go to PSG but keeping Cavani and Hamsik is definitely more important to them. Cavani, scorer of 23 League goals last season, will be relied upon to find the back of the net. Gokhan Inler, a player I rate hugely, will again be the metronome in midfield. His pass success rate of 86.5% last season underlines the quality he has in the centre of the park. Centre-back Hugo Campagnaro will also be vital to them again. He won 4 man of the match awards last season and was a rock at the back., hopefully for Napoli he’ll do the same again this season. I asked Waleed if he thought Napoli could possibly challenge for the title this season and this is what he had to say: “Napoli might shock us too but I doubt it.”

PALERMO

PARMA

INS: Aljaz Struna (Koper), Sebastian Sosa (Cerro Largo), Franco Brienza (Siena), Michel Morganella (Novara), Samir Ujkani (Novara), Egidio Arealo (Tijuana) OUTS: Pablo Gonzalez (Novara), Giuseppe Prestia (Ascoli), Karim Laribi (Sassuolo), Mauricio Pinilla (Palermo), Mattia Cassani (Fiorentina), Jasmin Kurtic (Varese), Matias Silvestre (Inter), Matteo Darmian (Torino), Joao Pedro (Santos), Armin Bacinovic (Verona), Davide Succi (Cesena), Aljaz Struna (Varese), Oscar Arzamendia (Verona), Afriyie Acquah (Parma), Umberto Nappello (AS Gubbio), Sinisa Andelkovic (Modena FC), Andrea Adamo (Foligno), Cristian Melinte (Astra Ploiseti), Rubinho (Varese), Francesco Della Rocca (Fiorentina), Emiliano Viviano (Fiorentina), Edgar Alvarez (Dinamo Bucharest), Federico Balzaretti (Roma)

INS: Dorlan Pabon (Atletico Nacional), Jonas Portin (Padova), Jaime Valdes (Sporting Lisbon), Nicola Del Pivo (Cesena). Raman Chibsah (Juventus), Ishak Belfodil (Lyon), Amauri (Fiorentina), Andrea Rossi (Siena), Fabio Lebran (Albinoleffe), Luca Tedeschi (Crotone), Riccardo Casini (Bologna), Jonathan Biabiany (Sampdoria), Gianluca Musacci (Empoli), Fabiano Santacroce (Napoli), Giuseppe Pacini (Siena), Marco Parolo (Cesena), Pavol Bajza (Dubnica), Ignacio Fideleff (Napoli), Afriyie Acquah (Palermo), Mirko Pigliacelli (Roma), Vittorio Fabris (Vicenza), Aleandro Rosi (Roma) OUTS: Matteo Mandorlini (Brescia), Sebastian Giovinco (Juventus), Niccolo Galli (Padova), Rolf Feltscher (Padova), Gianluca Lapadula (Cesena), Manuel Coppola (Siena), Davide Colomba (Ascoli), Raffaele Schiavi (Spezia), Milan Duric (Cesana), Abderrazzak Jadid (Grosseto), Danilo Pereira (Roda JC), Mario Rui (Spezia), Alberto Galuppo (Siena), Filipe Oliveira (Videoton), Francesco Finocchio (Bologna), Stefano Russo (Brescia), Nwankwo Obiora (Padova), Stefan Ristovski (AS Bari), Gregoire Defrel (Cesena), Goncalo Brandao (Cesena), Paolo Herman Dellafiore (Siena), Paolo Castellini (Sampdoria), Abdou Doumbia (Siena), Fabio Lebran (AC Perugia), Paolo Dellafiore (Siena), Alessandro De Vitis (Padova), Andrea Rispoli (Padova), Ze Eduardo (Padova), Francesco Valiani (Siena), Pietro Baccolo (AS Gubbio), Francesco Pambianchi (AS Gubbio), Luca Tedeschi (Cremonese), Gabriele Paonessa (Perugia)

It could well be a little difficult for Palermo this season. They finished 16 th last season and will probably do something similar (maybe a little bit better) this season. They certainly won’t struggle for goals with the experienced Fabrizio Miccoli up front. The Italian got an astonishing 16 goals and 12 assists last season and will most definitely playa huge role for the Sicilians again. Hernandez is not a bad strike partner at all but Palermo are pretty poor defensively. They conceded a whopping 62 goals last season and haven’t really strengthened their defence. Unfortunately for them this will be their stumbling block but relegation is not going to happen for Palermo. I asked Waleed what he thinks of Palermo this season and he believes “Palermo won’t struggle this year, they’ll do fine.” They’ll do ok then, but they certainly won’t be making waves.

Quite simply Parma relied on one man last season, and that man was Sebastian Giovinco. He was in imperious form last season, scoring 15 goals and providing 11 assists. The little maestro has gone now though, back to Juventus and he will be sorely missed. To compensate for his loss they have brought in a crazy amount of players. Fortunately in doing so they should just have enough to stay up with a lower mid table finish looking like the most probable situation for Parma come May 2013. Last season a lot of their play came down the right hand side and this could well happen again. Many have predicted them to play 3-5-2 (3-5-2!!!!!) and just who wouldn’t want to see that?

PESCARA

ROMA

INS: Gianluca Caprari (Roma), Luca Berardocco (Pisa), Elvis Abbruscato (Vicenza), Giuseppe Colucci (Cesena), Birkir Bjarnason (Standard Liege), Uros Cosic (CSKA Moscow), Gaston Brugman (Empoli), Lucas Chiaretti (Taranto), Juan Quitero (Atletico Nacional), Mattia Perin (Genoa), Antonino Ragusa (Genoa), Vladimir Weiss (Manchester City), Alessandro Crescenzi (Roma), Christian Terlizzi (Varese), Jonathas (Brescia) OUTS: Marco Sansovini (Spezia), Stefano Giacomelli (Vicenza), Andrea Gessa (Cesena), Loris Baccheti (Lanciano), Marco Verratti (Paris Saint-Germain)

INS: Marquinho (Fluminese), Tallo (Chievo), Alessandro Malomo (Albinoleffe), Dodo (Corinthians), Alessandro Florenzi (Crotone), Tomas Svedkauskas (Suduva), Leandro Castan (Corinthians), Jonatan Lucca (Internacional), Adrian Stoian (AS Bari), Michael Bradley (Chievo), Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Genoa), Ivan Piris (Cerro Porteno), Federico Balzaretti (Palermo) OUTS:Gianluca Caprari (Pescara), Cicinho (Sport Recife), Adrian Stoian (AS Bari), Mladen (Vitorul Constanta), Stefano Pettinari (Crotone), Mattia Montini (Benevento), Vitorino Antunes (Pacos Ferreira), Koffi (Wassland=Beveren), Alex Pena (AS Bari), Marco D’Alessandro (Cesena), Federico Viviani (Padova), Alexandru Pena (AS Bari), Fabio Borini (Liverpool), Juan (Internacional), Paolo Frascatore (Sassuolo), Mirko Pigliacelli (Parma), Ginluca Curci (Bologna), Andrea Bertolacci (Genoa), Leandro Greco (Olympiacos), Fabio Simplicio (Cerezo Osaka), Giammario Piscitella (Genoa), Valerio Verre (Genoa), Alessandro Crescenzi (Pescara), Jose Angel (Real Sociedad), Aleandro Rosi (Parma), Jacopo Galimberti (AS Gubbio), David Pizarro (Fiorentina), Gabriel Heinze (Newells Old Boys), Matteo Brighi (Torino)

Pescara were pretty majestic in Serie B last season but it looks unlikely I Delfini are going to be doing anything else apart from aiming to stave off relegation this season. Their manager and a host of players who got them to the top flight have left, although the signing of Vladimir Weiss from Man City is an interesting signing to say the least. I asked Waleed how he thinks promoted Pescara will get on and he thinks it could well be tough for them “Pescara are finally back in Serie A after 20 years. I doubt that they’ll have do well in their comeback in the league though. Zeman’s departure badly affected player mentally, important players have left and too much new manager Giovanni Stroppa has a tough task ahead of him. You can count of them when it comes to scoring though as they set a Serie B goal-scoring record last season with 90 goals in 42 games.”

Roma’s new manager Zdenek Zeman, who seems to be constantly referred to as a maverick, will certainly bring serious hope of a title push to Roma. Zeman is a staunch advocate of 4-3-3 and cares more about scoring goals than conceding them. I asked Waleed how he felt Zeman will impact Roma and this Is what he said: “New Roma boss Zeman will have a really positive impact on the club which will be clear throughout the season, in my opinion. Roma are now a side who are capable of scoring lots of goals in one match, nevertheless, they also fail to keep them out of their own net as they concede too many which is something they should work on.” The signings of Bradley and Balzaretti are hugely positive for them as is the fact they finished 7th last year. Without the distraction of European football Roma can focus all their efforts into Serie A. They could push Juventus close but Zeman’s tendency for his teams to concede lots of goals could put an end to a successful title challenge for Roma.

SAMPDORIA INS: Andrea Costa (Reggina), Eder Martins (Cesena), Paolo Castellini (Parma) Maxi Lopez (Catania), Lorenzo De Silvestri (Fiorentina), Tommaso Berni (Braga), Vahid Hambo (HJK), Marcelo Estigarribia (Le Mans) OUTS: Bruno Fornaroli (Panathinaikos), Daniele Dessena (Cagliari), Luca Rizzo (Pisa), Jonathan Biabiany (Parma), Bruno Martella (AC Perugia), Vasco Regini (Empoli), Vedran Celjak (Grosseto), Simone Zaza (Ascoli), Federico Piovaccari (Novara), Francesco Signori (Modena FC), Edoardo Blondett (Portosummaga), Vincenzo Fiorillo (Livorno), Paolo Sammarco (Spezia), Savvas Gentsoglou (Livorno)

Back in Serie A but maybe not for that long as they will undoubtedly find it hard back in the top flight. They have recently brought in a new manager; Ciro Ferrara. Ferrara may find it quite hard to drag Sampdoria away from a relegation dogfight but a good season will see them draw clear of the drop and into mid-table safety. I asked Waleed how he thinks Sampdoria will do after being promoted and he seems to believe they won’t do too badly “Sampdoria is the strongest one of them and they will have a tough beginning to the season but will smoothly establish themselves and finish anywhere midtable, in my opinion.“

INS: Matteo Contini (Real Zaragoza), Mattia Destro (Genoa), Giulio Cavallari (Vicenza), Manuel Coppola (Parma), Alberto Galuppo (Parma), Paolo Herman Dellafiore (Parma), Abdou Doumbia (Parma), Paolo Dellafiore (Parma), Matteo Rubin (Torino), Francesco Valiani (Parma), Andrea Campagnolo (Catania), Massimo Paci (Novara), Luis Neto (Nacional Funchal) OUTS: Franco Brienza (Palermo), Luca Rossettini (Cagliari), Michael Odibe (Arsenal Kyiv), Agostino Garofalo (Spezia), Alessandro Iacobucci (Spezia), Andrea Rossi (Parma), Paolo Grossi (Verona), Giuseppe Pacini (Parma), Packer (Parana), Alessandro Gazzi (Torino), Fabio Lucioni (Reggina), Emanuele Pesoli (Verona), Lorenzo Del Prete (Novara), Gael Genevier (Juve Stabia), Paul Codrea (Rapid Bucharest), Leonardo Blanchard (Frosinone)

INS: Migjen Basha (Atalanta), Matteo Darmian (Palermo), Jean-Francois Gillet (Bologna), Marco Miglorini (Chievo), Gianluca Sansone (Sassuolo), Mario Santana (Napoli), Alessandro Gazzi (Siena), Damiano Ferronetti (Udinese), Pablo Caceres (Mallorca), Guillermo Rodriguez (Cesena), Matteo Brighi (Roma) OUTS: Osariemen Ebagua (Varese), Mirko Antenucci (Catania), Matteo Rubin (Siena), Marco Chiosa (Nocerina), Francesco Pratali (Empoli)

They may have not won any of their last 5 games last season but Siena still finished well clear of Lecce and the relegation zone. Brand new manager Sersi Cosmi will want to maintain Siena’s top flight berth though he has been unsuccessful in convincing star striker Mattio Destro to stay at the club. It was always going to be an extremely difficult task to keep him at the club however. Destro was absolutely cracking for Siena last season and amazingly became the first player under 21 to score 12 goals in a Serie A season since 1971. He has moved to Genoa and will be sorely missed! If Siena strengthen well they will be certain they have what it takes to at the very least stay in the division.

Winners of Serie B last year Torino will be desperate to stay in Serie A this time out. They have been in the top flight many times before and that experience will be incredibly important in their quest for safety. One of their best signings has been the one of Argentinean midfielder Mario Santana. He only played 8 times for Napoli last season but did have an ok loan spell at Cesena where he played 16 times. There is no doubting the fact that they could well find it hard to stay up but if you continue to make sensible buys you never know. Again, I asked Waleed if he thought Torino was struggle and quite simple he believes they will “Torino will struggle; they’re just a level below other Serie A teams” They’re not written off, but they’ll definitely find it difficult!

UDINESE INS: Thomas Heutaux (SM Caen), Willians (Flamengo), Allan (Vasco De Gama), Daniele Mori (Empoli), Cristian Pasquato (Juventus), Ricardo Chara (Empoli), Marco Faraoni (Inter), Maicosuel (Botafogo), Darwin Machis (Mineros de Guayana), Dioni (Cadiz) OUTS: Zdenek Zlamal (Sigma Olomouc), Nikola Vujadinovic (SK Sturm Graz), Antonio Floro Flores (Granada), Gabriel Torje (Granada), Thierry Doubai (Sochaux), Jefferson (AC Perugia), Fabinho Ayres (AC Perugia), Jan Koprivec (AC Perugia), Mauricio Isla (Juventus), Knwadwo Asamoah (Juventus), Cristian Pasquato (Bologna), Samir Handanovic (Inter), Vasilios Karagounis (Olympiacos), Matej Vydra (Watford), Yves Baraye (Lumezzane), Alin Bucuroiu (CS Otopeni), Daniele Mori (Empoli), Dawin Machis (Granada), Damiano Ferronetti (Torino), Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina), Almen Abdi (Watford), Steve Leo Beleck (Watford), Alexandre Geijo (Watford), Juan Surraco (Modena FC)

Quite frankly Udinese are a selling club, relying on young players to do them a job before they can be sold for some serious money – it’s a business model that works for them. Despite their limited resources Udinese will 100% be aiming for a finish in the Champions League places. If that wasn’t to happen however, a finish below the top six and European football is highly improbably. I asked Waleed if he thinks Udinese can gain a top three spot again after selling Asamoah and a host of others, this is what he had to say; “Well, Udinese have sold a key player such as Alexis before the start of last season and still managed to find a Champions League spot. Well, that won’t be happening anymore from what I’m seeing. Lots of teams improving by strengthening their squads and Udinese are just going backwards. They’ll most probably end the season in a Europa League spot or even at mid-table. They won’t be facing mid-table but they also won’t be able to repeat last season’s heroics. They’ll be featuring in the Champions League next season which might harm their campaign and distract them a bit. If knocked out from group stages, they’ll be in the Europa League which will distract them depending on how serious they take it. They lost many important players and lots of their new signings will need time before having an impact. “

GERMANY

Friday 24th August sees the opening day of the new Bundesliga season, here is our team-by-team preview...

AUGSBURG

BAYER LEVERKUSEN

INS: Bance (Al Ahli), Klavan (Alkmaar), Moravek (Schalke), Musona (Hoffenheim), Ottl (Hertha Berlin), Petrzela (Viktoria Plzen), Philip (Jahn Regensburg), Sio (Wolfsburg), Voigt (Bochum) OUTS: Brinkmann (Cottbus), De Roeck (Leuven), Kapllani (FSV Frankfurt), Ndjeng (Hertha Berlin), Rafael (Fortuna Dusseldorf)

INS: Carlinhos (Desportiva Brasil), Carajal (Real Madrid), Fernandes (Club Universidad de Chile), Wollscheid (Nuremburg) OUTS: Adler (Hamburg), Ballack (contract expired), Banetta (Schalke), Corluka (Lokomotiv Moscow), Derdiyok (Hoffenheim), Giefer (Fortuna Dusseldorf), Jorgensen (Copenhagen), Oczipka (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Augsburg go into their second ever season in the Bundesliga with only 1 ambition, finishing outside the bottom 3. It was an ambition that was achieved last season which was a miracle in itself however it will be as good an achievement this year if they stay up again. New coach Markus Weinzierl will hope that nomadic striker Aristide Bance and Knowledge Musona, on loan from Hoffenheim, will score enough goals to keep them away from the relegation zone. Milan Petržela is another new signing and the coach will hope he can provide the guile to unlock the defences of the Bundesliga.

It is likely that this will be a season of transition for the side from the Bay Arena. With club legend Michael Ballack not having his contract renewed and Tranquillo Barnetta leaving the club along with his international colleague Eren Derdiyok Leverkusen have allowed a lot of experience to leave the club. The players that have been brought in, while undoubtedly talented, don’t have a lot of Bundesliga experience. A lot will be expected of the experienced duo Simon Rolfes and Manuel Friedrich to help the talented yet inexperienced squad. A big season is expected from Andre Schurrle although he is continually linked with a move away from Leverkusen as the summer continues. PREDICTION: 9th

PREDICTION: 16th

BAYERN MUNICH INS: Dante (Borussia Monchengladbach), Mandzukic (Wolfsburg), Pizarro (Werder Bremen), Shaqiri (Basle), Starke (Hoffenheim), Weiser (Cologne) OUTS: Butt (retired), Olic (Wolfsburg), Petersen (Werder Bremen), Pranjic (Sporting Lisbon), Usami (Hoffenheim)

Bayern Munich go in search of their first Bundesliga title in 3 seasons. The last time they did not win the title for 3 consecutive seasons was at the start of the 90’s. They have made some excellent additions in the shape of Brazilian centre half Dante, Xherdan Shaqiri from Basle and Croat striker Mario Mandzukic and are poised to be the closest challengers to Borussia Dortmund’s quest for a third successive title. The only question that remains is have the team got over the disappointment of finishing runner up in 3 competitions last season. PREDICTION: 2nd

BORUSSIA DORTMUND INS: Bittencourt (Cottbus), Kirch (Kaiserslautern), Reus (Borussia Monchengladbach), Schieber (Stuttgart) OUTS: Barrios (Guangzhou Evergrande), Da Silva (released), Kagawa (Manchester United), Kringe (released), Rangelov (Lucerne)

Dortmund go into the season looking to win a third consecutive Bundesliga title for the first time in their history. Although the champions have sold Shinji Kagawa to Manchester United they have replaced him with Werder Bremen’s wonderkid Marco Reus. The clubs ability to keep hold of the stars of the past 2 seasons is just as important as the signing of Reus and with no other major departures expected the hope for the rest of the league is that Dortmund get distracted by the Champions league after the disappointment of last season’s group stage elimination. PREDICTION: 1st

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH INS: De Jong (Twente), Dominguez (Atlético Madrid), Hrgota (Jonkopings), Mlapa (Hoffenheim), Xhaka (Basle) OUTS: Dante (Bayern Munich), Neustadter (Schalke), Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

How good a season Monchengladbach have could well depend on how the squad cope with the demands of a tough Bundesliga season and a European campaign. The departures of Reus (Dortmund) and Dante (Munich) have been offset with the signings of Luuk De Jong, Alvaro Dominguez and Granit Xhaka although much will depend on how they adapt when both De Jong and Xhaka are unproven at the highest level. This said it still expected that the club will have enough quality and strength in depth to challenge for a Champions League spot again next season. PREDICTION: 3rd

EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

FORTUNA DUSSELDORF

INS: Aigner (1860 Munich), Celozzi (Stuttgart), Inui (Bochum), Lanig (Cologne), Occean (Greuther Furth), Oczipka (Bayer Leverkusen), Trapp (Kaiserslautern) OUTS: Alvarez (Stuttgart Kickers), Bellaid (Sedan), Hoffer (Napoli), Korkmaz (Ingolstadt), Lehmann (Cologne), Schildenfeld (Dynamo Moscow), Idrissou (Kaiserslautern)

INS: Cha (Celtic), Giefer (Bayer Leverkusen), Rafael (Augsburg), Reisinger (Freiburg), Soares (Duisburg), Wegkamp (Osnabruck) OUTS: Broker (Cologne), Lukimya (Werder Bremen), Rosler (Alemannia Aachen), Schwertfeger (Alemannia Aachen)

Eintracht Frankfurt return to the top flight after 1 season away. Expectations for the coming season will be to ensure that they maintain their top flight status and then build from there. It is expected that they should have goals in the team and the hope is that Olivier Occean and Alex Meier will have enough goals in them to replace the goals lost to Kaiserslautern when Mohammadou Idrissou moved there. Defensively the team have also strengthened with Stefan Celozzi and Bastain Oczipka both signing over the summer. All in all the signings should mean that Frankfurt have enough to retain their top flight status but only just. PREDICTION: 15th

Fortuna Dusseldorf returned to the top flight after an absence of 15 years after the end of season relegation play offs in May. It is expected that life will be a struggle this season on their return. The signing of Andriy Voronin is a shrewd move from coach Norbet Meier and he will hope that Voronin’s Bundesliga knowhow will prove invaluable in their bid to fight off relegation

PREDICTION: 17th

FREIBURG

GREUTHER FURTH

INS: Hedenstad (Stabaek), Kruse (St Pauli), Terrazzino (Karlsruher) OUTS: Barth (Aalen), Hinkel (released), Lumb (Zenit), Reisinger (Fortuna Dusseldorf)

Freiburg will hope to take the form that saw them lose only 4 games in the 2nd half of last season into the new season. Coach Christian Streich kept his side up in almost miraculous fashion last year and he has kept faith with the majority of that squad. It is hoped that new signings Max Kruse and Vegar Eggen Hedenstad will add a little bit more quality to the squad. Kruse a signing from St Pauli will be required to get goals and also unlock defences and provide the ammunition for the forwards. PREDICTION: 13th

INS: Hesl (Dynamo Dresden), Rhman (Asante Kotoko), Sobiech (Borussia Dortmund), Stieber (Mainz) OUTS: Karaslavov (Botev Plovdiv) Occean (Eintracht Frankfurt), Schrock (Hoffenheim)

It is widely expected that Furth will find their first ever season in the Bundesliga a long and difficult one. Having said that it was the same last season for Augsburg and they avoided the drop. For that to happen this season Furth will need a lot of hard work, determination and also an element of luck. The squad doesn’t have a lot of top flight experience and they have also sold last season’s top scorer Olivier Occean to rivals Eintract Frankfurt. A long season ahead looks likely. PREDICTION: 18th

HAMBURG

HANNOVER

INS: Adler (Bayer Leverkusen), Rudnevs (Lech Poznan) OUTS: Bertram (Bochum), Guerrero (Corinthians), Jarolim (contract expired), Petric (Fulham)

Hamburg could be described as a club in transition. Having had a disastrous season in 2011/12 that saw them flirt with relegation for most of the second half of the campaign much more is expected from them this season. However having allowed large number of players to leave the club in the off season and only adding Rene Adler and Artjoms Rudnevs to those that have stayed it could be a difficult season again. The ability of Latvian Rudnevs to adapt to his first attempt at playing in a big league could be crucial to Hamburg’s finishing position. PREDICTION: 10th

INS: Felipe (Standard Liege), Nikci (Zurich), Sakai (Kashiwa Reysol) OUTS: Lala(Bayern Munich), Pogatetz (Wolfsburg), Stoppelkamp (1860 Munich)

Hannover have realistic expectations of qualifying for Europe again this season. However it is unlikely that they can continue to punch above their weight indefinitely. While Hannover may be expected to challenge for a Europa League place at the end of the season a lot will depend on how players like Ron-Robert Zieler, Didier Ya Konan, Mohamed Abdellaou and Steve Cherundolo perform again this season. New acquisitions in the form of Felipe, Nikci and Hiroki Sakai will need to adapt quickly to a step up in class. While goals will hopefully come from Mame Biram Diouf who scored 6 goals in the second half of last season following his January transfer from Manchester United. PREDICTION: 11th

HOFFENHEIM

MAINZ

INS: Delpierre (Stuttgart), Derdiyok (Bayer Leverkusen), Schrock (Greuther Furth), Usami (Gamba Osaka), Wiese (Werder Bremen), Joselu (Real Madrid) OUTS: Mlapa (Borusia Monchengladbach), Musona (Augsburg), Raitala (Heerenveen), Sigurdsson (Spurs), Starke (Bayern Munich), Zuculini (released)

Hoffenheim coach Markus Babbel will be hoping that the acquisitions of centre forward Eren Derdiyok, centre back Mathieu Delpierre and goalkeeper Tim Wiese will help his side push for a European place for the first time in the clubs history. A lot will also be expected from young Brazilian Roberto Firmino who had a good debut season in the Bundesliga last year although having scored 9 goals in a side that finished in the bottom half of the table. PREDICTION: 8th

INS: Junior Diaz (Club Brugge) OUTS: Stieber (Greuther Furth), Zidan (released)

Young coach Thomas Tuchel has decided to keep faith with his squad from last season after the complete overall this time last year when he brought in more than 10 new faces. It is expected that a place in mid table will be achieved this season. It is hoped that Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting will build on his successful season last year and provide the goals that keep Mainz clear of a relegation battle. It is also hoped that Jan Kirchhoff will continue to build on his successful season last year and prove to be the main stay of the Mainz defence.

PREDICTION: 14th

NUREMBURG

SCHALKE

INS: Antonio (Rapid Bucharest), Gebhart (Stuttgart), Kiyotake (Cerezo Osaka), Ngankam (Hertha Berlin), Polter (Wolfsburg) OUTS: Bunjaku (Kaiserslautern), Didavi (Stuttgart), Maroh (Cologne), Wollscheid (Bayer Leverkusen)

INS: Barnetta (Bayer Leverkusen), Neustadter (Borussia Monchengladbach) OUTS: Dac (CFR Cluj), Hoogland (Stuttgart), Kenia (Zenit), Kluge (Hertha Berlin), Raul (Al Sadd)

Nuremburg go into their 4th consecutive season in the top flight with the main ambition of ensuring they retain that status for next season. This could be difficult as last season’s top scorer Daniel Didavi has returned to Stuttgart and central defender Phillip Wollscheid has signed for Bayer Leverkusen. A lot will be riding on the shoulders of Tomas Pekhart who goes into his second season in the Bundesliga hoping for more than the 9 goals he scored last season. It is also hoped that new signing Hiroshi Kiyotake will be able to adapt to his new environment quickly and provide glimpses of his undoubted ability. Defensively Nuremburg have signed Marcus Antonio, a journeyman central defender and again it is hoped that he will impressive enough to keep them out of a relegation battle. PREDICTION: 12th

- 26 -

Schalke will once again depend on Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for the goals to spearhead their season however with the loss of Raul the pressure will increase on Huntelaar to continue to score goals and remain free of injury. This said they have a lot of quality in the midfield area of the field and big things will be expected of teenager Julian Draxler after a season that included his first German full cap at the end of it. While many see Schalke as having enough strength in depth to challenge both domestically and in Europe they should still have enough quality to have a good season domestically.

PREDICTION: 4th

STUTTGART

WERDER BREMEN

INS: Hoogland (Schalke), Torun (Hertha Berlin) OUTS: Boulahrouz (Sporting Lisbon), Celozzi (Eintracht Frankfurt), Delpierre (Hoffenheim), Gebhart (Nuremburg), Schieber (Borussia Dortmund)

INS: Elia (Juventus), Gebre Selassie (Slovan Liberec), Lukumya (Fortuna Dusseldorf), Petersen (Bayern Munich) OUTS: Boenisch (released), Marin (Chelsea), Naldo (Wolfsburg), Pizarro (Bayern Munich), Rosenburg ( contract expired), Silvestre (released), Thy (St Pauli), Wiese (Hoffenheim)

Only the top 2 won more league games in the second half of last season and it is largely based on that performance in the second half of the season that many Stuttgart fans go into the new season with renewed optimism. The best signing for the season may have arrived in January when they signed Vedad Ibisevic from Hoffenheim. His goals ensured a place in the Europa League this season and the club will be hoping that his goals this season give them an opportunity of pushing for a top 4 finish this coming season. PREDICTION: 5th

It’s been all change at the Weserstadion over the summer months. Some important players have left including Marko Marin, Naldo, Claudio Pizarro and Tim Wiese however coach Thomas Schaaf will be hoping that the additions of Eljero Elia, Theodor Gebre Selassie, Sokratis Papastaphopoulos and loan signings Nils Peterson and Kevin de Bruyne more than compensate for the loses. The hope is that with no European distraction Bremen may be able to capitalise and qualify for European football next season in what in all honesty should be a transitional season. PREDICTION: 7th

WOLFSBURG INS: Dost (Heerenveen), Naldo (Werder Bremen), Olic (Bayern Munich), Pannewitz (Rostock), Pilar (Hradlec Kralove), Pogatetz (Hanover) OUTS: Ben Khalifa (Grasshoppers), Chris (released), Lenz (Retired), Mandzukic (Bayern Munich), Polter (Nuremburg), Salihamidzic (released), Sio (Augsburg)

Coach Felix Magath appears to have carried some shrewd business over the summer with the signings of Bas Dost, Ivica Olic and Vaclav Pilar all looking good pieces of business. Another good piece of business looks the addition of former Werder Bremen centre back Naldo, who adds some excellent Bundesliga experience to the back line which conceded 60 goals last season, more than bottom side Kaiserslautern. Another area to improve on from last season is a dismal away record in which saw them pick up only 12 points on the road all season. PREDICTION: 6th
