Honda CB400 Super Four Review

In this column, I will introduce "Owner Review Summary", a collection of reviews based on the voices of owners who have actually ridden various motorcycles from the Webike Community's My Bike.

In this article, I will bring you the real voices of the owner about his CB400!

This is what CB400 Super Four is!

It is no exaggeration to say that every motorcyclist has ridden on this CB400 Super Four once, and it is one of the most popular motorcycles since it was introduced in 1992 with CB1000 Super Four under "Project BIG-1". Even now, it is used as a driving school vehicle, and many riders may have the image of "CB as a motorcycle". Other reasons for its popularity include its design, which can be said to be a model of a naked model, but above all, the sound of the inline-4 engine and the unique valve switching mechanism "Hyper VTEC", which has been installed since 1999, can be said to be the main reasons for its popularity.

If you look at the owner's voice, there are many people who were attracted by VTEC and bought it, and the sound when VTEC comes on while driving is exceptional, and it makes driving more fun together with the inline-4 sound. By the way, VTEC is not installed in the model that is adopted as a driving school vehicle, so be careful when you buy it! Since it is familiar as a driving school vehicle, it is also popular for its easy handling.

However, although VTEC is very popular, there are many people who said that fuel consumption worsens while driving pleasantly. If you are concerned about fuel consumption, you should be careful about how you drive. Also, as I'm sure you've experienced during your training, the weight of the vehicle is relatively heavy due to the large 400cc body. All in all, it's a very satisfying ride, so I'd say it's a great first motorcycle or one to ride in anticipation of moving up to a bigger motorcycle!

A quick summary of CB400 Super Four

Advantage

  • VTEC is the best!
  • Inline-4 sound
  • Easy handling as used for training vehicles
  • Stability at high speed
  • The royal naked style
  • There are many parts for this popular model.
  • Less trouble

Disadvantage

  • The motorcycle is heavy among 400cc models.
  • If VTEC is used a lot, fuel consumption will be low.
  • Not much storage space under the seat.
  • Your hips will get tired after a long ride.
  • I wish the current model had LED blinkers.

Foot grounding

About 50% of the riders who are 166-170cm tall answered that the CB400 Super Four's foot grounding is "heel floating".

Purpose of purchase, use, comparative models I fell in love with it at first sight when I saw it in the motorcycle shop I usually go to.
Strengths/Satisfactory The exhaust note is so loud that it makes you wonder if it's stock. Not too loud, not too quiet, just right. I'm still breaking it in, so I haven't had a chance to rev it yet, but I'm looking forward to high rpm. The basic style of a naked motorcycle. The big one color with shining pearl is beautiful. After breaking in, I revved it to high rpm. I could clearly hear the switching sound. I think the punch of high rpm is more than the previous model. I have been riding my previous CB for 8 years, and I am planning to ride this CB for 10 years.
Weaknesses and complaints Perhaps it was the new silencer's effect, but I think the lower torque was reduced a bit. Still, I was able to start in 2nd gear. The thump may have increased a little. It will be trial and error until I get used to it. Both the head and tail lights are now LED, but I would have liked the indicators to be LED as well.
Advice to prospective buyers I fell in love with CB and changed from SB to SF. I like the smooth engine and the sturdiness with little trouble. This new CB is also a great good motorcycle. I can look at it all the time and never get tired of it. I think 400cc is enough for me and I don't need 1300 because I think weight, easy handling, and acceleration are suitable for me. (It is also troublesome to get a license.) Unlike a car, I think it is important to be able to handle a motorcycle with my age, physical strength, and skill. If you want an overwhelming sense of acceleration and superiority, you should get a license, improve your skills, and buy a large motorcycle.

Purpose of purchase, use, comparative models It is the first motorcycle that I bought after I got the ordinary automatic motorcycle license. I chose CB400SF because I knew only the training car at that time.
Strengths/Satisfactory  It's an unconventional motorcycle that anyone can ride well, and it's fun to ride because the sound changes when it switches to the VTEC variable valve mechanism.
Weaknesses and complaints Because the normal use rpm was on the edge of entering VTEC or not, it was hurriedly changed to 2 valves or 4 valves. In addition, when VTEC is used, the emphasis is on driving, so the fuel consumption deteriorates in exchange for the fun.
Advice to prospective buyers This is the last carbureted CB400SF, so it is recommended for those who prefer carbureted to FI. However, VTEC is inferior to FI which changes by throttle opening, because VTEC changes by fixed rpm.

Purpose of purchase, use, comparative models I used to ride a VTR250, but as I had more opportunities to go touring far away on the highway, I wanted to solve the lack of engine power and stability, and I liked the sound of the inline-4, so I bought a new one. The use is touring.
Strengths/Satisfactory I have a sense of superiority that I am riding the best of Honda's regular motorcycles. It is easy to drive on the expressway. 100km is normal. There is little vibration. It is relatively easy to drive for a long time because you don't lean forward. Inline-4 sound is the best. The maximum mileage in a day is 700km, but it is stable even if it rides this much. Where it's an advantage and a disadvantage. Because of its weight, it is stable on the highway.
Weaknesses and complaints

I'm not good at slopes because it's heavy. When I enter a narrow road such as a mountain road, I am nervous that I may fall. If you lean it to the downhill side on a slope, it will fall down the next moment. (I can't even keep one foot on the ground.)

The cost of the oil change is about 10,000 yen. If VTEC is activated, fuel consumption will be low. The seat is a little hard though it may be the same in all. (I get a pain in the ass around mile 150.)

It's not a complaint, but you might want to consider that there is no storage box (there is one under the seat). Where it's an advantage and a disadvantage. The weight is heavy. It is hard to get up when it falls.

Advice to prospective buyers

It is recommended for those who go touring far away from the city using the expressway. I wouldn't recommend it for a short ride around the neighborhood. The maintenance cost is high.
When I say how it was when I replaced it from VTR, it is a point and a half. I got what I was looking for, but I lost the nimbleness of the VCR. It also got worse gas mileage and the maintenance costs jumped.

If you are switching from a 250cc, you should think carefully about what you may lose when you buy. If you have a large driver's license, you might want to get a 600cc or something like that because new cars can be quite expensive.
