I'm probably alone on this, but I think this is just as fantastic as the first film. Fantastic as a sequel and a stand alone film. Great acting, great writing, and a great comeback for The Champ.
The sixth & final instalment in the Rocky film series, Rocky Balboa is the perfect conclusion of the Rocky saga and is a finale that this iconic franchise always deserved. My favourite of the series, without a doubt, Rocky Balboa remains the only sequel in the series that has the heart, soul & passion of the first film infused in its storyline, features huge improvements in many of its aspects, and pays its homage to the original in an honest, heartfelt manner.

vanity has always been a big component of Stallone's franchise work, but Rocky, for better or worse, was always his most idealized look at himself, who he most wanted to be. sometimes it's the prideful fighter, other times it's an icon of American exceptionalism. here it's just the kind, humble, strong man. this isn't as fascinatingly politically freighted as the first film but it does have ROCKY's magnanimity and occasional introspection.
Paulie is the greatest layered character in these movies and I love him. Pouring out a shot of bourbon for all the bums with stuff in the basement. Paulie <3
Now, with this film I can finally claim that I've watched every film in the Rocky franchise. Although I watched the first five so long ago that they are practically forgotten.
And, well, the story is fairly intriguing. Our physical antagonist hardly stands out, but the real adversary and obstacle was not this boxer, but rather age and perception. Although the Creed films ultimately continued the franchise, finishing Rocky's character as a boxer in this film is fantastic, particularly since it seems like the end of a cycle. A few things really hold Rocky Balboa from being great.
- a forgettable villain. Arguably even more forgettable than Tommy Gunn.
- atrocious fight choreography during the final fight. It’s so haphazardly edited and unwatchable at times.
- the weird pseudo-love story? I mean clearly Rocky is loyal to Adrian and Marie seems to accept that, but there’s so many moments of awkward tension.
Everything else though, is pretty good!! The reconciliation with the past. The relationship with his son. It very smartly invokes that familiar feeling of pursuing what we love, even when the world says we shouldn’t, so it’s difficult to not find joy in the movie.
In my heart of hearts, I know this is probably the correct ending but I can’t help but love the alternate ending.
Don't really get a lot out of the actual fight in this one weirdly (or am maybe a bit averse to this era's idea of stylizing it? the Xbox simulation of Rocky lol) but overall this one is much more successful than V at replicating the small-scale dramatic elements of the original that it wants to and there's no question that Rocky is one of the purest, sweetest character's ever conceived for the screen and at the time this was a very nice sendoff for him. So considerate, always doing nice things for people, making their lives better in small ways, adopting animals, taking care of his drunk and sad and lonely friends, and then as always he beats the absolute shit out of some dude at the end as a form of therapy.
