This fun sci-fi comedy was an early lead role for Kurt Russell: even fairly early on in his career Russell showed that he had the ability to hold a film together, playing an average student who gains all the knowledge of a computer—and becomes a genius—after getting struck by lightning.
There’s a real charm to these live action 60s/ 70s Disney comedies, a lot of that coming from investing in the silliness of their premises. This one has fun taking its big high concept idea and running with it, Dexter’s abilities getting him into trouble with a local gangster (Caesar Romero in an entertainingly energetic villainous turn).

In school, starting in middle school, I was on what we called the scholars bowl team. You probably called it quiz bowl, if you were at any other American school. A fun little Disney film back when they made original live action content that wasn’t some regurgitated soulless copy of a past classic. But I digress.
Kurt Russell, in one of his earliest film roles, has that natural charisma that you just can’t teach. You either have it or you don’t.
Might be the most inconsequential hour and a half I've ever spent, which is saying something considering my life so far has been a giant waste, but I got no beef with this flick. It's silly, colourful, and baby Kurt Russell is adorable!

At Medfield College, an accident with a donated computer gives Dexter Riley the ability to remember any knowledge learned instantly and perfectly.
The years have not been kind to The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes. The plot and the tech in this movie are frankly laughable, computers have come a long way in the intervening fifty years or so since this movie was made, and you can guarantee it that they will have been used much more efficiently than to help a very young Kurt Russell win a quiz competition.
Sweetie babe Kurt Russell got turned into a human computer who could do math and I WATCHED THE WHOLE THING.
Medfield student Kurt Russel inherits the abilities and recall of a room-sized computer during a freak electrical accident and goes on to become an intellectual celebrity. Bad guy Cesar Romero wants Russel eliminated when he accidentally divulge's Romero's illegal gambling operations. Disney regulars Joe Flynn and William Shallert play their usual roles.
Not laugh out loud funny, but cheap effects and innocent incidents ensure Russel's character will appear in the equally ridiculous The Strongest Man in the World six years later. Definitely dated Disney family friendly fare.
While it's amusing watching Kurt Russell stutter and glitch out in the last act, there isn't anything particularly interesting about this one. Not only that, but he hardly ever actually wears tennis shoes.
Still cute and fun, even if the cheesiness is greater than I remember. Bakalyan looks like he could be Orlando Bloom's father. This is also where the trivia points of Ulaanbaatar as the capital of Mongolia and Lebanon, Kansas being the centerpoint of the contiguous US got embedded in my brain. Though I rolled my eyes a bit at the doctor examination, I still really enjoy the car chase and paint escape scenes. Ra Ra Medfield college! Down with State!
