Botany and Ecology

Pimpinella aromatica M. Bieb.

Biennial herb to 60 cm tall covered in short pubescence. Taproot. Branching upwards from one stem. Leaves to 30 cm long, pinnately compound with 3–7 pairs of leaflets that are irregularly and deeply toothed. Umbels with 5–10 rays and up to 4 cm across flat topped. Rays are pubescent. Flowers white with tips of petals notched and curving inward. Fruit is hairy, ovoid, with conical tip and persistent styles that diverge. Found throughout Caucasus. A plant commonly found in dry clay soils or rocky glades and among shrubs.
