Acknowledgements

I should like to thank Dr John Wood for giving me the opportunity to accompany him into the field, and for all his subsequent encouragement and help, especially with notes on habitat and conservation, thereby ensuring this paper had detailed information beyond what was provided by herbarium labels. I should also like to thank the curators of the Instituto Botánico Darwinion, San Isidro, Argentina (IS) and of the Herbarium of the Museo Botánico de Historia Natural Noel Kempff Mercado, Santa Cruz, Bolivia (USZ), the Nacional Florestal Martín Cárdenas (BOLV) and Stephan Beck of the Herbario Nacional de Bolivia, La Paz, Bolivia (LPB), for permission to consult their herbaria. Special thanks are also due to Lesley Walsingham for frequent help given to me at Kew, to Margaret Tebbs, for the beautifully drawn illustrations and to the reviewers who greatly helped to improve the text.
