Summary

An account of the five species of Talinum native to Bolivia based on field and herbarium studies is presented. Line drawings, photographs and SEM images of seeds highlight differences in habit, inflorescence and seed morphology. A key to the species is provided and notes on diagnostic characteristics, ecology and distribution are provided. Talinum porphyreum M. Mend. & J. R. I. Wood is described as new. Additionally Phemeranthus punae (R. E. Fr.) Eggli & Nyffeler, long placed in Talinum, is recorded for the first time from Bolivia, indicating the presence of the genus Phemeranthus in Bolivia. The opportunity is taken to lectotypify this species.

The authors acknowledge the support of the Darwin Initiative Project 162/11/010 which financed the field work which showed the diversity of Talinum in the Bolivian inter-Andean valleys. We are also grateful to Eliana Calzadilla (USZ) for preparing the illustrations which accompany this paper, to Robert Scotland (OXF) for preparing the SEM photos of the seeds and to John Baker for help in assembling the images. We are especially grateful to Mario Giorgetti for providing the photographs of Phemeranthus punae and information about its occurrence in the Tupiza area. We also express our thanks to CTES for the loan of the type of Talinum nocturnum and the herbaria at BM, BOLV, E, HSB, K, LPB and USZ for permitting access to their specimens.
