Abstract

Diplusodon occurs mostly in the Cerrado Biome the floristically diverse savannah that covers more than two million km2 of the Central Brazilian Plateau, extending west into Bolivia, south to Paraguay, and east to the Caatinga. The genus is most diverse in the mountains of Plateau Goiano in the west central region of Brazil, and this region is considered the primary center of diversity of the genus. In Diplusodon ca. 65% of the species are predominantly endemic to the specialized campos rupestres and high-altitude rocky cerrado. Most species of Diplusodon have characteristics that are typical of plants that grow in cerrado vegetation. The plants lose part of their leaves during the reproductive stage, and remain perennial by means of their resistant subterranean organ, the xylopodium, which is an adaptation for seasonal drought and fire.
