It’s been 22 years since the death of Selena Quintanilla, a Tejano music singer who captured America’s heart in the early ‘90s with songs like “Como La Flor,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and “Dreaming of You.”
After conquering a male-dominant genre, a feat many deemed impossible, the Grammy winner had blossomed into a cultural icon at the time of her death.
On March 31, 1995, Selena was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club. She was 23 years old. The news sent shock waves around the world, prompting several vigils across the U.S. and Mexico. Saldivar was later found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. She will be eligible for parole in March of 2025.
While the passing of time can be a detrimental factor for any celebrity, in Selena’s case, it’s only helped broaden her legacy. Her cultural resonance can, in part, be attributed...

Latin music is alive and well in Las Vegas. From the moment Ricky Martin took the stage on Wednesday for the opening night of his Vegas residency show at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, the crowd geared up for a thrill ride though his catalog… and they got it. Sin City is about to experience "La Vida Loca."
But before Ricky Martin kicks off his Las Vegas residency on April 5 at Monte Carlo's Park Theater, the 45-year-old superstar gave Et's Kevin Frazier a sneak peek at what to expect from the high-energy show.
"We wanted to do something that has never been done in Vegas," Martin teased during rehearsals in Los Angeles on Friday. "There's gonna be a mosh pit! ... Right here, in the center, is where the crowd [won't] have chairs. It's about dancing and having a great time."
Martin, of course, will be leading the charge, dancing his heart out right from the get-go.
"Of course, I come to sweat!" he said. "Thirty seconds into the show and I'm drenched. It's a good energy show. We start with one of the biggest hits and then we have lots of highs and lows. We're gonna go through the romantic side of life in general, and then we're...

Thoughts in response the news that the Sundance Cinemas sold to Carmike for $36 million were shared on the Art House Convergence Group Mail. The buyout concerns members of the Art House Convergence because the Sundance Cinemas represents the second of three Art House “chains” (Landmark being the largest, Sundance second and Laemmle third)
Read the article this conversation is based upon in The Hollywood Reporter.
John Toner of Renew Theaters: Branding is such an important part of our world. And it turns out that the Sundance name was part of this sale:
"The deal does not provide for Carmike to expand the Sundance brand, but Carmike will have the ability, under a license arrangement, to operate the five theaters under the Sundance brand name."
Interesting. A major, mainstream chain will now fly the Sundance flag.
The Sundance Cinemas website says that they "bring the finest selection of art, independent, foreign and documentary film programming to cities across the country."
Hmmm.
Does the Carmike chain operate any purely art house style theaters? I don't know the answer to that question.
And I wonder if that license limits how Carmike can operate their Sundance Cinemas?
And will this sale affect the Sundance Institute brand in any way?
Or can people differentiate?
What do you think?
Anonymous:
Given Carmike’s history, it will be a race to see what happens first: they go bankrupt (again) or destroy the brand.
Gary Meyer:
Sundance was financed by Oaktree and it is not a surprise that they would wait for the moment when they thought they could make a profit. Though I was part of the original team developing a concept when General Cinema (remember them?) was the major partner, the theaters play a very different on screen menu than was proposed.
Redford wanted it to be pure art, one screen dedicated to documentaries 365 days a year, another showing experimental films. Never in a mall. The most "green" place you ever saw. An outdoor amphitheater on the roof for film and live shows, art gallery, filmmakers flown in.
Damn but we had fun coming up with ideas. We (Redford included) were kids..."Let's put on a show like nobody has ever seen." But the reality is when you spend the kinds of multi-millions they did to build their very nice places, you have to play studio blockbusters to pay the bills. Only the Sunset Sundance in Los Angeles (booked by Jan) is a true art house. The others play mostly commercial with a sprinkling of art.
And plaudits must go to Paul Richardson who carried out the mission of designing and building classy cinemas that often set a new standard. He oversees the look and feel but it is hard to imagine he will stay too log after the transition period.
As has been pointed out there have been many for-profit Sundance ventures. Redford dominates that brand and can do what he wants ---- though I doubt he is happy about Sundance cigarettes considering his vehement anti-tobacco position and who knows about Sundance Hottubs and Sundance Microprocessors amazingly owning the url http://www.sundance.com/.
Many non-profits bring in for-profits to operate businesses (the National Park system are a prime example) but museums, symphonies, operas generally do operate those shops and some of their restaurants (others are for profit concessionaires). And there are conventions just for running those shops. It is an art.

SunDance cigarettes!
Oh, yeah, in my Sundance hot tub, smoking a SunDance menthol. Livin’ La Vida Loca!
I guess the word Sundance, itself, is not completely trademarked.
Opens up all sorts of ideas for unauthorized spinoffs, doesn’t it?
Yes, the nonprofit Sundance Institute is separate from the for-profit Sundance Cinemas, which will be owned by Carmike.
Heck, the for-profit Sundance Channel/ TV was previously sold off and is now owned by AMC.
And then there’s the for-profit Sundance Catalog, the for-profit Sundance Resort, and I’m sure there are others…
Branding is about perception. But the nonprofit Institute brand does not seem to be affected by these for-profit cousins.
Does anyone else find that interesting?
Juliet Goodfriend, President at Bryn Mawr Film Institute:
Everything we know about branding is that it is a perception not necessarily affected by facts or by the relationship of the brand to the values trying to be communicated. Certainly becoming a commercial brand even into the exhibition area will affect adversely the Sundance brand. We can be sure that the customer will be confused at the very least.
Chapin Cutler, Boston Light & Sound:
The non-profit Sundance Institute and the commercial Sundance Cinemas have no connection except both being "owned" by Mr. Redford. This, the sale will have no effect on the Institute or any of its projects.
David Bordwell, Film Historian & Blogger:
It seems to me that the Sundance Cinemas and the Sundance Festival are very different in their taste orientations.
In Madison (where the firm opened the first dedicated Sundance venue) the theatre shows pretty much what the multiplexes are showing: “Black Mass”, “The Intern”, “Grandma”, “Sicario”, “Everest”, “Testament Of Youth”, and “The Martian”. “Princess Bride” is thrown in for extra.
The other Sundance Cinema I know, the one in Seattle, is only a little less standardized (has “Going Clear”, which we have yet to get), but still is mainstream.
https://www.sundancecinemas.com/seattle_film_info_reviews_discussion.html )
I saw “Gone Girl” there.
Some of these titles might screen at the Sundance Festival, because of its increasing industry orientation. But I see a real split between the festival’s tastes and the chain’s taste.
Incidentally, I’m told by our local Sundancers that they have no ability to program specifically for our community; the programming is done at another corporate level.
Interesting to compare the Sundance playlists with the Landmark ones. By and large—there are outliers here and there—they seem to me to have similar programming around the country.
http://www.landmarkreccinemas.com
They even have “Hotel Transylvania 2”.
One of the things I’ve learned from lurking on this list is that there can be a huge difference in terms of programming (or curating, your call) for non-profit and for-profit art houses.
Which only makes Tim League (Drafthouse) all the more heroic. How the devil can Alamo do what it does in Lubbock, Texas? And, Tim, if you’re reading this, why not look at Madison, Wisconsin?
Ps: I assume that one attractive aspect of Sundance to Carmike is the liquor licenses. True?
John Toner:
The Smithsonian, National Geographic, and the Metropolitan Museum are great examples of nonprofits pushing into for-profit territory.
But I think that most people would recognize that a gift shop is significantly different from the core mission of an institution.
A magazine is closer, but still different.
A TV channel is closer still. Those channels easily could be packaged as nonprofit, like a PBS or BBC operation.
But aren’t the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Cinemas really close in mission?
Don’t get me wrong. I have no problem with for-profit art houses. In fact, I’m a little bit in awe. It’s sort of like tight rope walking without a nonprofit net.
Can anyone think of any other examples?
Gary Meyer:
The non-profit brand being used for for-profit purposes isn't unique to Sundance. Our friends here in DC at the Smithsonian, a government-chartered public non-profit, partnered with Showtime and CBS to run a for-profit cable channel, as do our friends here in DC at National Geographic, who partner with fucking Rupert Murdoch, who just also took over the iconic magazine :(.
Amy Heller, Milestone Films:
Not to mention that every museum has a shop that bears its name. The Metropolitan Museum also has stores at airports and Rockefeller Center.
John Toner:

But for whatever it is worth, I found this online: "The mission of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Store is to connect people to the world of art and to the museum experience. Just as visits to the Met are enjoyable, educational, and inspirational, our products evoke fond memories, invite moments of reflection, and foster day-to-day enjoyment and appreciation of art, artists, and cultures from around the globe and across the centuries. The X Factor 2014 started its Live Shows with a No.1s Week theme. It's almost as if they wanted us to make the obvious joke about there being a large steaming pile of No.2s on the Fountain Studios stage. But we wouldn't be that crass.
It feels too early to be overly harsh about the Class of Series 11 - we've got a couple more months of this to endure yet - and this wasn't the worst crop of X Factor contestants we've ever been gifted. The real problem with this weekend's shows was that it felt like we'd seen it all before. About 10 times before, to be precise.
Simon Cowell couldn't even be bothered to tuck his shirt in on Saturday night's show, which pretty much embodied the shoulder shrug attitude from the producers and judges this year. Will this do? I guess it will have to, because it's this or the bloody Voice.
It feels too early to be overly harsh about the Class of Series 11 - we've got a couple more months of this to endure yet - and this wasn't the worst crop of X Factor contestants we've ever been gifted. La vida loca, indeed! Week seven of Dancing With the Stars' 18th season—the so-named Latin week—was chock-full of drama. One contestant went to therapy, one performed with a broken rib, and another was taken to the hospital halfway through the live show. Plus, one couple was eliminated from the competition. Let's recap! (Spoilers, obviously.) Amy Purdy and Derek Hough, safe This week's rehearsals were particularly difficult for Amy, not just because of the dance—a rumba to The Doors' "Light My Fire"—but also because of some personal problems she [...]...

The prime minister named the final part of the movie as one of his favourite film moments. Is he just trying to be edgy and populist, or is he on to something?
David Cameron is something of a renegade. He walks his own path, dances to the beat of his own rhythms. That's why, when the Daily Mail asked him for his five favourite films, he listed five classics (including Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca and Schindler's List) before adding "and the last 10 minutes of Shrek 2".
While Cameron's inclusion of Shrek 2 might simply be a misjudged stab at tedious zoinks-a-lummy political faux-populism, perhaps he's on to something. Perhaps the last 10 minutes of Shrek 2 really do constitute the sixth-best film of all time. Let's take a closer look at it – completely out of context, because if the rest of the film isn't good enough for David Cameron, it's not...

On Wednesday’s second episode of the two-week Sing-Off event, it was time to settle into the silliness with “Party Anthems.” Considering that almost every song performed on the premiere was also a party anthem, I think the theme is just to give some specificity to Nick Lachey’s punnery. Because if you gave him free reign, he could literally go on for the whole two weeks without stopping. I would never suggest irresponsible consumption, but taking a sip of something every time Nick turns a “party” phrase might be an interesting thing to do.

The country fivesome clearly dominated the night with the best performance of the competition thus far. God bless America!
The Sing-Off returned for round two Dec. 11, pitting the remaining nine a cappella groups against one another in the ongoing war of warbles. Of course, because TV war is different than real-life war, this week’s battleground was paved with “party anthems!” And sadly, one group’s party had to end a little early.
‘The Sing-Off’ Night 2 Results: Calle Sol Eliminated
Though talented, Calle Sol has always seemed to value style over substance, so I wasn’t too surprised to see them eliminated tonight. Plus, they did Ricky Martin‘s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” as their party anthem, so it was basically a suicide mission from the start.

The MTV Video Music Awards are set to thrill you with Lady Gaga‘s live madness, Kanye West‘s rage, and Miley Cyrus‘ freaky antics on August 25, but let’s not forget that this celebrated award show has a long and kickass history of honoring gay and gay-ish music videos. Here are the 11 awards that still hold up as gay totems.
11. Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ “Give It Away,” Best Breakthrough Video
Maybe Rhcp‘s video for “Give It Away” is best known for its silver-coated textures and editing tricks, but never forget that director Stephane Sednaoui included a couple of gay treats for the Lgbt demo: Note that furtive kiss between Anthony Kiedis and Flea (pictured above), and don’t forget that between-the-legs shot of Kiedis grabbing his thong-clad junk. Those may be silly stunts, but this video is a pretty awesome exhibition of the mania and fun of rock’s homoeroticism-friendliest group.

The “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer was joined by his four-year-old sons Matteo and Valentino as he strolled through the terminal prior to his departure to Los Angeles.
Less than 24 hours prior, Ricky finished up the Aussie version of “The Voice,” though his team lost out to Seal’s squad member Harrison Craig.
However, Martin seemed to enjoy his time in the Land Down Under. He tweeted, “Thank U Australia 4 such an amazing season of @TheVoiceAU! Ur hospitality is out of this world. You've truly made me & my family feel @ home.”...

Holy adorable. Ricky Martin took his precious, mini-me twin sons, Matteo and Valentino, to the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday. The proud daddy, 41, held the 4-year-old boys' hands as they made their way in to see the animals. Matteo and Valentino, who were dressed cutely for the outing, were fully engaged with their famous father as they took in all the sights. But it wasn't all kid-friendly fun at the zoo! Hilariously, Ricky posted a WhoSay photo of a koala lifting its leg somewhat provocatively. He captioned the photo, "Lol That awkward funny when a koala turns out 2b a bit exhibitionist." Did you know Psy, the Korean pop sensation behind "Gangnam Style," is an Mc Hammer fan? Of course he is. Uniting two decades of songs you don't like, Sunday's American Music Awards featured a mashup of "Gangnam Style" and Hammer's "2 Legit 2 Quit," for some reason. The reviews are in for the Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita," and it feels like everyone went to a different show. The AP is swooning over Ricky Martin and no one else, the Wall Street Journal says it's Michael Cerveris who steals the show as Juan Peron, and the New York Times isn't really into any of it. The only thing anyone seems to agree on is that Evita's voice needs some work. Yikes. With all this dissension in the air, it seems the only way to pull a meaningful assessment out is by starting, as they say, a dialogue. To make it happen, we're launching a new structure we'd like to call "E-Chatting With The Critics," in which we, your humble moderators, make our way through the reviews from the biggest dailies and fashion a conversation out of the standout lines. New York -- Much of the buzz coming from the new revival "Evita" has been about the spitfire Argentine playing the title role. But all of the heat actually comes from the guy shaking his bon-bon.
Ricky Martin is easily the best thing about this revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's bio of Eva Peron, which opened Thursday at the Marquis Theatre. He sings beautifully, dances gracefully, athletically climbs ladders, plays his role with a knowing sneer and elicits drools in his suspenders and tight white shirt. He even makes a mustache work.
In fact, maybe it's time for Broadway to have a new rule: Put Ricky Martin in everything. He would fit in happily at "Newsies." He would definitely enliven "Death of a Salesman." Heck, put him in "Mary Poppins" and watch the roof really lift off.
Crisply directed by Michael Grandage ("Frost/Nixon"), with high-kicking choreography by Rob Ashford...

Is Glee Livin La Vida Loca?
The chances of Glee doing its own rendition of Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” has skyrocketed now that the hunky performer himself has entered negotiations to appear as a guest star on an upcoming episode. The casting of Martin is notable as Glee creator Ryan Murphy all but promised there would be no stunt casting this season. Having Martin appear is about as stunty as you can get, as he has the power to drive both men and women crazy, although realistically no woman would ever have a chance with him.
TVLine reported Martin would be playing “the hottest Spanish teacher ever in the history of Ohio.” I’d have to agree with that statement. I’m straight as an arrow, but even I can’t say no to those eyes. They’re just so dreamy.

Gang members and ex-policeman who claimed Christian Poveda was an informer jailed for between four and 30 years
A court in El Salvador has convicted 10 gang members and a former policeman over the murder of a Franco-Spanish photojournalist who made an internationally acclaimed documentary about them.
Christian Poveda initially gained the trust of a notorious gang known as Mara 18 in La Campanera, a tough slum in the capital, San Salvador, but in September 2009 was ambushed and shot four times in the head.

Christian Poveda, a French filmmaker who has spent years gathering footage of a brutally violent Salvadoran street gang for his "La Vida Loca" documentary, has been found dead (shot in the head) in a gang-riddled El Salvador neighborhood. Poveda practically lived among members of one gang, the Mara 18, filming gang initiations, drug use, tattoo session and funerals. On the day of his death, he had set out to visit the gang-dominated area of Soyapango, just outside the capital, to arrange an interview with female gang members. In April, Poveda told the Los Angeles Times that despite the drugs, shootings, beatings and cruelty he captured on film, he had sympathy for many of the gang members, whom he described as "victims of society." He placed the blame for their violence on Us policies, and said he "was never afraid of them." "As savage as they can be, they're people of their word.

San Salvador -- Suspected Salvadorean gang members killed French filmmaker Christian Poveda, whose 2008 film "La Vida Loca" crudely depicts the hopeless lives of members of the infamous Mara 18 street gang, local police said Wednesday.
Poveda, 53, was shot on a road 10 miles north of the capital of San Salvador, as he drove back from filming in La Campanera, a poor, overcrowded suburb and a Mara 18 stronghold.
President Mauricio Funes said in a statement on Wednesday night that he was "shocked" by Poveda's slaying and ordered a thorough investigation.
"La Vida Loca" (The Crazy Life) closely followed the lives of several heavily tattooed gang members, some of whom were jailed or killed during the shooting of the film.
Poveda first came to El Salvador in the early 1980s to cover the civil war that ravaged the poor Central American for over a decade. He returned after the armed conflict was over to cover street gangs.

Christian Poveda, 52, was found with a gunshot wound to his head in a car just north of the capital San Salvador on Wednesday.
Poveda's 2008 film La Vida Loca (The Crazy Life) followed the violent lives of members of the Mara 18 street gang and even showed disturbing images of gang members shot to death in the streets with relatives crying over coffins.

Gangsters are suspected to be behind the killing, according to Britain's The Times Online.
