DELICIOUS! I ordered the combo chicken and rice. It includes chicken (steamed) and a breaded fried chicken. The steam chicken was really good. It had a hint of ginger. The brown sauce/dip really completes the dish. So make sure to add extra to your order. When you combine the chicken, brown sauce and rice. YUM! The fried chicken was very good with the sweet chili sauce. One of the girls recommended the curry puff, which was also very good. The curry flavor wasn't too overpowering and paired well with the chili sauce.

I ordered the spicy fried chicken. It was very flavorful and had the right amount of heat. I was also pleasantly surprised by the white rice that it came with. It reminded me of the rice that comes with Haitian chicken. The food was good, but there were only small portions of chicken. I would need to order extra chicken next time.

I always thought this place was a Hainan Chicken place (Taiwanese), but it's actually Thai! I wanted to try this place regardless and it seemed simple and yummy. We went for lunch and I got the Take 2, so I can try both types of meat and the Ga Pao Gai. You order first and then they'll bring you your entrees. The place is small and trendy, but the atmosphere feels very open and inviting. I got their Thai Iced Coffee while we were waiting and I forgot how delicious it was. Our meals came in plastic take-out containers. At first I was like, why plastic? Such a waste and not good for the environment, but I thought twice. If you don't finished, you'll just need to ask for a lid and they wouldn't have to waste water for dishes if they had gone the traditional route. BUT if you do finish, you toss the plastic. 50/50. I was torn, but it is what it is.
The food on the other hand was absolutely delicious. We came back 2 more times after the first. Take 2 was good, but I leaned more on the crispy chicken than the poached chicken, plus it was a good amount of chicken, cucumber, sweet chili sauce (in a container) over rice...AND they give you a side broth. The Ga Pao Gai was decent, but he enjoyed it. The next 2 visits, we both ordered the Crizp. The crispy chicken was perfectly made and it definitely hit the spot all the times we've been there. I will definitely come back when I'm back in town.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 2 - Jul 22, 2022
Such an underrated restaurant in Sacramento. I would consider this a hidden gem. Without question I would come back here again. The food was so delicious!
I came here on a Thursday and luckily was able to beat the rush. I ordered the classic meal which is poached chicken (breast and thigh with skin), jasmine rice, cucumber and cilantro. It comes with soybean sauce and chicken broth. The sauce with the chicken had so much flavor to it. I would order the sauce by itself and take it home. The chicken was so fresh and tasty. The rice was cooked to perfection. I must say that the chicken broth definitely hit the spot. A great combo with the whole meal. My friend Ordered the Crizp meal which is crispy chicken instead and that was so good! Everything about the experience was great. The restaurant is super clean and the employees are so nice!
I can't believe I'm just now finding this restaurant out. I'll be telling my family and friends about this place. You will see me again here soon to try out the rest of the menu. Thank you again Gai 'N Rice!Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 1 - May 21, 2022
Gai 'N Rice is the place to go in Sacramento for Khao Man Gai, a Thai dish of boiled chicken, flavorful rice, and savory broth. Khao Man Gai was originally made famous in Portland by Nong's Khao Man Gai, and then several Khao Man Gai shops popped up in the Bay Area, and now Sacramento has its own Khao Man Gai restaurant. (Gai 'N Rice spells it Khao Mun Gai). Gai 'N Rice not only offers the classic style poached chicken, it offers different styles with crispy chicken, tofu, and curry noodle chicken.
I came for lunch and ordered the Take 2 ($13.95), which included half lean chicken, half crispy chicken on top of jasmine rice and a side of chicken broth. The crispy chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside, yet tender on the inside. It came with a side of sweet chili sauce and was delicious together! The lean chicken was cooked well, but alone, did not have as much flavor. The lean chicken came with the soy bean sauce, which was okay, but not my favorite. I would try the peanut sauce next time. The jasmine rice was flavorful and the chicken broth was delicious.
At Gai 'N Rice, you order and pay at the counter, then the staff drops off the food to your table. The container and utensils are all plastic, and the water is self-serve. The restaurant was clean and bright. They also offer a few other sides such as dumplings, curry puff, taro puff, as well as a mango sticky rice for dessert. I had a great experience at Gai 'N Rice as the food was fresh and very satisfying.Helpful 13Thanks 0Love this 12Oh no 0 - 1162981476Apr 28, 2022
I've been here twice now and have to say it's gotta be one of my favorite simple rice plate restaurants.
Parking here can be tricky since it's in a tiny strip plaza and there is limited parking, with one way in/out. The two times I've been here I did not have trouble finding parking.
The inside of the restaurant is nice and cozy. It's pretty modern with a decent menu. I always get the crispy chicken rice plate. It's delicious with the sweet and sour dipping sauce and the rice. The rice is probably cooked in some sort of broth or seasoning since it has great flavor on its own. They also have lemonade and Thai tea here. Along with a few typical Thai dishes. Great place for a simple meal that satisfies.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Jun 15, 2023
This place is so goated! I'm so glad they were able to reopen after their initial shutdown. I always get the take 2 and it's amazing. Something about their chicken always hits the spot. It comes with a little side of soup as well. Their rice is also seasoned and is delicious. It's a little pricy but for what you get I feel that it's worth it and it's supporting a small business as well. 10/10 recommend!

I seriously need to learn how to make this. We order from here at least once a week, and sometimes I even door dash it to work multiple times a week!
Recently, I've been looking to choose healthier options when eating out. Hence the "Lean" option from Gai n Rice's menu.
Portions are consistent. Portions are always well sized.
Flavor is consistent.
Something about the special soy sauce (tastes garlicky, which I love) really compliments the rice and chicken.
We also regularly order the strawberry lemonade and Thai iced coffee.
Thai iced coffee can be a hit or miss, but it's delicious from here and not overly sweet which can be a common theme among Thai restaurants.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 604458Jan 12, 2022
It was my first time here today but it won't be my last! If you just see this as chicken and rice then yes, it's a bit on the higher end to spend for that. But when I tell you I enjoyed every bite I took of my order, I say that with no exaggeration. It was so bomb!!!
I ordered the Take 2 ($14 and some change after tax) and my only regret is that I didn't order 2 of these. The sauce combination with the chicken, the tasty broth to wash it down, and one thing I really feel like that is so simple but brings the dish to the next level is when it's garnished with cilantro. I don't let any of that go to waste bc it actually makes a difference in the taste. Those small details that didn't get overlooked are what makes me feel like it's worth it. Give this place a try --I'm glad I turned around to (I was otw home from Oto's, the Japanese grocery store down the way from here). It's small inside so I can see it being a bit of a longer wait when it's busy, not very good for large groups. But I'll have to be back and try that mango sticky rice dessert as well next time.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Aug 23, 2022
It has been quite some time since I last dined here. Even though there weren't a lot of diners, they were quite busy. The cashier kept shouting "order" to the kitchen staff for the customers phoning in. I had the Take 2- lean & crisp. The rice didn't have much flavor and the lean meat was also a bit bland. I like the crispy chicken though. I enjoyed it overall, but it wasn't as good as I remembered it.
