Don't Miss Steven Meisel's Fashion Photography Exhibit This Week

Fashion photography– it's strong, it's glamorous, and it's almost always in your face. If any images come to mind from your favorite publications– Vogue, Vanity Fair, Bazaar– chances are they were shot, if not influenced, by Steven Meisel, whose work is currently on display in the Design District in an exhibit celebrating his work, Role Play.

From now until June 10th you'll be able to observe 25 of his most iconic works on two floors inside the Design District's Moore Building. Among the photographs you'll encounter is a black and white portrait of Kristen McMenamy and Daniel Blaylock staring straight at you, apathetically. This image was published in the December 1992 edition of Vogue, and is said to have ushered in the decade of grunge.

"The portrait of Kristen McMenamy and Daniel Blaylock, from the grunge fashion story in American Vogue, is one of my favorite pictures," Meisel has said. "This image captured a real cultural moment of a music scene and fashion scene fusing together to create a new look. I remember Anna was thinking of killing the story. After all, it was a lot of black and white, an unusual casting, men in skirts - altogether a bit stronger than what was running in Vogue at the time. Alexander Lieberman, however, said it was one of the most important fashion stories ever and it ran in its entirety."

As you continue your journey through Meisel's photos, each with its own narrative of glamour and vulnerability, you'll notice familiar faces: Naomi Campbell locking lips with Christy Turlington; Linda Evangelista strolling through the gardens of France or pouting at some poor soul in New York; Verushka, Lauren Hutton and Isabella Rossellini being irresistible in fur. The entire exhibit focuses on women at their most feminine, save for one sole image Stefan Forrester-Walker, but with smokey eyes and a sheer dress, even he is at his most feminine in this portrait, too.

Role Play, which is supported by Loewe, is open daily from 11am to 7pm and will finish its Miami run on June 10th
