Our latest book design is now launched in Frankfurter Buchmesse 2023! The book ‘Role of Play: New Games, New Chances. A Future Perspective on Play in Society’ represents a comprehensive study of modern game design and play in contemporary society. In alignment with the overarching theme of play, we wanted to show the value of play in a creative process. Our design aimed to transform the book into an interactive object, casting readers in the role of active players. Deliberate design choices, such as the inversion of cover images and horizontally symmetrical title placements, were implemented on the book covers. This design intrigues curiosity, prompting readers to engage physically with the book and explore alternative visual perspectives. The incorporation of a perforation system on the book covers introduces an additional layer of interactivity. Through this perforation system, readers can unveil the subtitle of the book, cleverly concealed within a maze of flying letters on the title page. This design principle extends to the chapter dividers, where hidden messages await discovery, contributing to an enriching reading experience. The playful typography and concealed messages are interwoven throughout the book, creating a visual flow that unites all the layered design elements together. A particularly noteworthy feature is a tiny, flipped animation situated on the right margin of Part 2, transforming this section into a functional flip book. This design element serves as a nostalgic homage to the simple joy of play, inviting readers to recapture the boundless imagination of childhood. New book, new story! We are delighted to announce our design for Janske Hombergen’s latest book that offers a compassionate perspective on dementia care. About the book: ‚Naar Buiten' by Janske Hombergen is a heartfelt and evocative book that delves into the world of dementia with a unique approach. It explores the therapeutic potential of nature and shared childhood memories in rekindling the spark of reminiscence for those living with dementia. Reading ‚Naar Buiten', readers will get on a nostalgic journey through the lens of a young child who, like many of us, marveled at the wonders of nature during their early years. The author, inspired by her own memories, engaged with older individuals and tapped into their recollections of yesteryears. The book beautifully weaves in nature-related proverbs and sayings, adding cultural depth to the narrative. Through engaging storytelling, memories from childhood began to resurface, bridging the gap between generations. About the design: Our design philosophy for ‚Naar Buiten’ is rooted in simplicity and authenticity. Given the book's intended audience of elderly individuals living with dementia, we opted for a traditional and dignified layout that enhances the book's readability and imparts a hint of retro charm. The classic design provides ample space for the beautiful seasonal nature photographs, all captured by the author herself based on her childhood memories. The book's storytelling goes beyond words, extending into the visual realm. We crafted the visual narrative to ensure a seamless flow that enriches the verbal stories and sparks remembrance. To aid in navigating the book's diverse content, which includes journal entries, writings, songs, poems, and recipes, we introduced small symbols to mark each section. This thoughtful touch helps readers connect the various elements of the narrative cohesively. Renate - our art director - is absolutely thrilled to explore the Art Biennale São Paulo alongside many incredibly nice and talented Dutch artists and curators. They are now joining the trip organized by Mondriaan Fonds. It also includes a joyful party of the Dutch Embassy and Mondriaan fonds, where Andre Driessen - Dutch Ambassador to Brazil - gives a talk. The Art Biennale this year explores the idea of choreographing the possible within the impossible, inviting us to dive into radical imaginations about the unknown. The curatorial team takes audiences on a journey that transcends boundaries and hierarchical norms, focusing on freedom and resilience. As we embark on this choreographic journey of the impossible, we can't wait to see how art, history, politics, the physical, and the spiritual come together to form a fractal image that challenges our understanding of the world.
