Bayern Munich are on the verge of re-signing former defender Jerome Boateng on a free transfer.

As reported by Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Bavarians are in advanced negotiations with the German centre-back after receiving the go-ahead from the club’s hierarchy.

Boateng has completed part of his medical tests, and his signing is expected to be made official soon.

The 35-year-old will begin training with the first team in the next few days. The duration of his contract hasn’t been revealed.

Boateng will always be remembered as one of the legendary figures of the Bavarians, having played a prominent role in the club’s perennial success in the last decade.

A nine-time Bundesliga winner, Boateng was also part of the Bayern side that lifted the Champions League in 2012/13 and 2019/20.

The 2014 World Cup winner spent two seasons at Lyon after parting ways with Bayern in 2021.

Boateng has been a free agent since leaving the Ligue 1 outfit this summer. He is a stop-gap signing to tackle the injury problems at Bayern.

With Matthijs de Ligt sidelined and Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae recently recovering from injuries, Thomas Tuchel has been concerned about the squad’s defensive depth.

Boateng has been keen to return to the Allianz Arena after rejecting a proposal from the Saudi Pro League.

Regardless of his arrival, Bayern are planning to add defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The reigning Bundesliga champions are also expected to re-activate their pursuit of Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha following the summer transfer failure.

Bayern’s attempts to move to the top of the Bundesliga table were curtailed by a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig last night.

Tuchel’s side are currently third behind Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart.
