In a frank chat, Juliette Lewis has opened up about quitting drugs at 22, filling in her dark spaces two decades ago with the support of family and friends.

Lewis, 41, stars in Secrets and Lies alongside costar Ryan Phillippe – who just revealed his lifelong battle with depression.

“I can tell you I have dealt with mania my whole life,” she told PEOPLE Now Friday, noting humorously, “I’m gonna top his depression. I am manic and crazy!”

Surrounding herself with good people was everything to her recovery, she added.

“I quit drugs at 22,” she said. “I traveled a lot, I dealt with my priorities. I have such a beautiful, strong family and friends and they are like everything to me.”

Lewis plays Det. Andrea Crawford on the ABC show, which premiered last Sunday, and is investigating a murder in which Phillippe’s Ben Crawford is a suspect.

She praised costar Phillippe, calling the role his breakout performance and adding that his handling of such a dramatic part is nothing short of “phenomenal.”

“That’s a role of a lifetime. He plays a broken man, a guy on the edge. Not many actors have to play that realm of emotion.”
