If Chris Evans is returning to the big screen as Captain America, he doesn’t know much about it.

“I always see those reports,” the actor said on The View Monday when asked about rumors that he’ll rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “And it’s news to me.”

Evans, 42, said that “every couple months, someone says that they’re getting [Robert Downey Jr.], and [Chris] Hemsworth, and Scarlett [Johansson], and everyone’s coming back.” But, he added, “No one’s spoken to me about it.”

The actor played Steve Rogers/Captain America, a core member of the Avengers team, in 11 films from 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. In the latter film, the character disappeared via time travel, signaling an end to Evans’ MCU run.

Rumors of bringing back Johansson as Black Widow or Downey Jr. as Iron Man — characters killed during the events of Endgame — have been swirling since Variety reported earlier this month there were talks to bring them back.

“Look, I would never say never,” Evans told The View co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro of potentially reprising his most famous role. “But I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

Sam Wilson/The Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie, has since inherited Steve’s iconic shield and will lead Captain America: Brave New World in 2025. "Sam Wilson is Captain America," Evans wrote in a tweet last year.

In an interview with GQ published in September, Evans reiterated his “never say never” sentiment.

“It was such a wonderful experience,” he said of his time in the MCU. “It’s something that I am very proud of… And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”

During April's Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, Evans said he was "sure" there were more Steve Rogers stories to tell.

But, The Wrap reports he added at the time, “I just don’t want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way it really landed so well… As much as I’m connected to that role, and love telling those stories, and working with those people, it doesn’t quite feel right right now.”

Johansson, who was last seen as Black Widow in the 2021 prequel, said it "would be a miracle" for her character to return when asked about the rumors on the Today show.

“It would be a marvel,” Johansson, 39, told Savannah Guthrie. “But who knows?"

Evans starred in this year’s films Ghosted and Pain Hustlers, as well as the animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. He’ll next appear in Red One opposite Dwayne Johnson.

On Sept. 9, Evans married Warrior Nun star Alba Baptista in a private ceremony at an estate in his native Massachusetts.
