MacGowan — who is best known for his song "Fairytale of New York” — and Clarke tied the knot in 2018 after an 11-year engagement, according to The Irish News. They have also been together for almost 40 years.

The musician — who found major success during the 1980s with his Irish Celtic punk band — was diagnosed with viral encephalitis in 2022, according to Sky News

MacGowan is reported to have been in intensive care since his diagnosis, per the outlet.

According to the Mayo Clinic, encephalitis is inflammation of the brain that can be caused by such things as a viral infection, bacterial infection, autoimmune inflammation and insect bites.

Last week, Clarke shared a hospital photo of her husband and wrote in her caption, "I just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who has been messaging me and ⁦@ShaneMacGowan."

She went on to thank MacGowan’s The Pogues bandmates, Terry Woods and Spider Stacy, for visiting him in the hospital, adding, "Love and prayers for everyone who is struggling right now hang in there!”

Days later, Clarke then shared another post on her Instagram page of her kissing MacGown as he rested in a hospital bed.

“Love ❤️ is the most beautiful and powerful thing that we can experience as humans but love can also feel painful especially if you are afraid of losing a person or anything else that you love 💗,” shewrote in her caption.
