Anna Magnani, an Italian actress, rose to fame in the early post World War II years with her performance in "Rome Open City."

Her talent won her a scholarship in Rome's St. Cecelia Dramatic Academy. After that came roles with touring companies and years of low pay.

It was 1934 before Magnani starred in films, turning out a string of productions little known outside Italy.

Her first American film was "The Rose Tattoo" with Burt Lancaster, a role that brought her wide fame and the 1955 Oscar for best actress.

Other films Magnani starred in are "Wild Is the Wind," directed by George Cukor; "The Fugitive Kind," with Marlon Brando and Joanne Woodward; "The Secret of Santa Vittoria," with Anthony Quinn; and the 1972 Italian made for television movie "1870," with Marcello Mastroianni.
