Returning Sunshine Stars defender and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Godfrey Oboabona, says he is ready to get back into action in the Nigeria Premier Football League after rejoining his former club for the rest of the season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Oboabona was unveiled last Thursday in Akure ahead of the second stanza of the 2023/24 NPFL season. He has been without a club since leaving Georgia’s Dinamo Batumi in January 2021.

After featuring for the club in 2013, the 33-year-old was penned for his second debut with the Owena Whales in their match-day 20 game against Kwara United on Sunday, but he eventually played no part due to registration issues.

“I’m 100 per cent ready. I’ve been in camp with them and I was in the lineup for the last game but unfortunately on match-day, I was told my registration was not yet done. When I’m on the field, I play with my whole heart and I want to give my all again,” Oboabona told our correspondent.

Oboabona was an integral part of the Sunshine team in 2012/13 before he was selected by late coach Stephen Keshi for the Super Eagles 2013 AFCON campaign, FIFA Confederation Cup and 2014 World Cup.

He hopes to bring confidence to the side, who are currently 15th in the NPFL with 23 points, just two points above the drop zone.

“They started the season before I joined them, so I’m trying to give all my best with the team and give the players some more confidence, so that we can push the team up because right now their position in the table is not too good.

“It’s also a delight to play under Kennedy Boboye, a title winning coach. Also, the affection of the people of Ondo State is one of the things that motivate me,” he added.

After leaving Sunshine Stars in 2013, Oboabona joined Caykur Rizespor in Turkey before stints in Saudi Arabia, Croatia and Georgia.
