Williams called a special press conference today with Felipe Massa and deputy team principal Claire Williams present, announcing the Brazilian’s intention to retire from Formula One at the end of the current season. Having spent fifteen years in the sport, the last three with Williams, Massa has had highs and lows, successes and struggles, and is ready now to take a step back.

He says: “I have so many great memories over the years and thank everyone in all the teams I have come through to help me get to where I am today. My career has been more than I ever expected and I am proud of what I have achieved.”

Claire added: “Anyone who knows Felipe knows what a warm and caring person he is, with an infectious personality. He has done a great deal for our sport over the years and I think every team that has had the pleasure of working with him has great affection for him.”

They are not the only ones, Massa was reportedly met by a standing ovation in the press conference, and many, many people have been sharing their warmth and affection for him via social media.
