When recently TVLine spoke with Greenleaf powerhouse Lynn Whitfield about her stunning performance of Lady Mae’s series-ending sermon — a tour de force so impactful, it still gives us chills just thinking about it — we couldn’t resist. We had to, had to, had to ask what she knew about creator Craig Wright’s plans to build a spinoff around her beloved character.
“Well, he’s working,” she said. “I’ve not read anything, but I know that he’s been working on it, and you know how brilliant he is.”
That, we do. Which is but one of about a zillion reasons we’re so eager to pick up Lady Mae’s story where it left off. “Craig, with all of his gusto, all of his talent and creativity… I think he’s thinking about it quite a lot. And we have had some conversations,” Whitfield teased. “But, you know, the nature of our relationship is so funny. He’ll say, ‘What would Lady Mae like — red or white or blue?’
“I’ll say, ‘Oh, blue,’ and he’ll say, ‘OK, got it,’” she continued. “And then he goes off and comes back with something brilliant. So we have had a few of those kinds of conversations. We just have to wait to see where we end up.”
Whatever the premise, Whitfield is as curious as fans to see what the future might hold for a newly widowed Lady Mae. “I think it would be fun,” she said, “to see where she lands.”
Understatement of the year? Perhaps. What are you hoping to see happen in the Greenleaf spinoff? Hit the comments with your ideas.
Hopefully it starts production this year and he’s closer to the end than the beginning of writing it.
Kind of doubting it’ll actually happen at this point, if it doesn’t even seem like there’s a clear idea for the show. I hope I’m wrong – I was excited when they first mentioned the idea of the spinoff back when Greenleaf was wrapping up
For a show set in a megachurch, it made sense to not pursue production during a pandemic since those scenes would be extremely costly to shoot.
And frankly, a little time between Greenleaf and a spin-off is nice. Especially given how the world changed in the last year, a lot of fertile soil has been put down for a spin-off to be different. Mae was never my favorite character and the idea of her leading a church when she is such an abhorrent spiritual leader is horrifying – honestly, she and Bishop deserved to be abandoned by their congregation, not embraced. So I would like to see that reality reflected in any continuation of her story.
I would rather a Grace spin-off. Merle Dandridge was so, so good, and she and Rick Fox investigating the world could be a great show without the Greenleaf baggage.
Oh ,I am praying it will come back! Lady Mae could show up strong and move the church where it should be, drama won’t stop the move as she use strength that her husband didn’t, Women moving the church in the new generation of sin!
i agree
sorry my I agree comment.was ment for
Diana Elizabeth Butlers comment.
GreenLeaf, a very powerful depiction of a family serving through a ministry. My hope is the spinoff will be just as powerful.
Greetings,
I would like to see Lady Mae as the Lead Pastor and perhaps meeting another Pastor who lost his wife and they offer companionship to one another and who knows where the future would lead them.
Thank you
Bring back the full casts and bring back Charity’s ex Phil. Then figure out a way to bring Bishop back, whether it’s in dreams or whatever, must have him.
I agree!! They should open the scene with Lady Mae or Grace waking up from a terrible dream. Greenleaf just won’t be Greenleaf without Bishop and Lady Mae. I’ve been ready for a continuation because the writers left so many loose ends.
I agree 💯!! Bring the whole cast back and let this be a dream that wakes Lady Mae up!
I would like for the Bishop to have a recovery & be apart of the new spin off. We’ve all fell in love with this even- tempered, kind, gracious man who we all see like a loving Father & husband.
I agree. No spinoff will work without the full cast. Yes have Lady Nae and GG wake up from a dream. There is no show without Bishop!!!
I hope they dont ” let” bishop die off!! I hope he will be still part of the cast” he is a awesome” veteran” actor cant think of his name” old school, and of course” lynn whitfield” she is a ” great one” also! I did enjoy” greenleaf” although it is a ” church” with a bunch” hypocrites” who need to know how to live for God” they need ” Jesus
Greenleaf was the best. LadyMae was my favorite. The spinoff have some pretty big shoes to fill. I am waiting with anticipation.
That would be nice if they bought back lady Mae
I would like to see grace and even one back miss them all .they were so much
Love it .
I certainly pray and hope that they bring something back of Greenleaf I miss it
The actors are all superb and enhanced the story lines to the maximum. I also feel the shows is executed inappropriately and is so dynamic that you can’t wait to see each episode every week. Kudos to the whole process.!!!!
What date will greenleaf comes back on?
Series finale aired last August.
It wouldn’t be the same without the whole Greenleaf family GreenLeaf was a very good series sorry that it ended so soon hope that it could be brought back wit all the cast members
Would.like to see her Pastor the church alongside her daughter.
I would love to see Greenleaf come back, I’ve missed everyone.
I’m just glad there will be a spinoff. I was sooo disappointed when the show was ended. I thought there was a lot more to tell. I wish the show Greenleaf had just went on hiatus like so many other shows did during the pandemic, wait it out and come back with powerful storylines instead of bringing it to a complete end. YES I want to see a spinoff but honestly it want work for me if all the Greenleafs aren’t in it.
GiGi and Marcus together in New York with Gigi going back to her career as a high powered attorney and Marcus working for the New York Times. Zora and Sophia attending New York University. Jacob with Tasha running a nonprofit organization in NYC, that way Jacob can be close to Zora while she’s attending college. Let Sophia come out as a lesbian, and Zora become romantically involved with either an Asian young man or some other International student.
Hahahha you have a script already. Go Girl. BRILLIANT. EXCEPT.WE MUST HAVE BISHOP EVEN AS A GUARDIAN ANGEL
I loved Greenleaf! I was very disappointed when it ended, me and my daughter & husband. So many people that I know was so hurt when Greenleaf ended.
We would love to see what happens next. That was a powerful message by Lady Mae.
We need a spin-off for this show.
I meant Darius, not Marcus.
Here’s my opinion some of the new guess that we’re on the show spoiled the show for me,It was doing great without them and I only said some of the guest And I am not forking around.
I loved Greenleaf. I loved and hated the characters, but that’s because they played their parts. I loved how many of the storylines tied the scriptures in, i.e. “Tamars Sisters.” I’d love for all the characters to be in it in some form or fashion, but that may not happen. Whatever you do, I’m going to watch!
Can’t wait for a spinoff. This series was so great! Loved the evolution of Lady Mae’s character. She really blossomed into a righteous woman. I would also like to see where Grace ends up with her reporter career.
I love lady Mae she played such. a strong leader ship role yes lets see spin off Greenleaf was one of my top three series never could choose top one between power queen sugar or greenleaf
