Dante Gabriel Rossetti was an English painter who founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood movement. Born in London to one of the most famous artistic family dynasties of his time, he received an elite education. He studied at the Royal Academy, showing great interest in Medieval art. After meeting a group of like-minded young artists, including John Everett Millais, he developed the manifesto of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which advocated that English art needed reforming. As a group, they rejected the Mannerist style/tendencies/features and the techniques of Sir Joshua Reynolds. They wanted to return to what they believed was the highest form of art, Flemish and Italian paintings from before the Renaissance. As Rossetti appreciated all forms of Medieval art, his oil paintings were thus concerned with literature, myths, and religious scenes from Medieval England. Throughout his life, he worked within the Brotherhood to further his intellectual interest in the period, not only painting but also translating and writing poetry.
