Gutknecht started his professional art career in 1938. His native homeland of Germany spurred his interest in naturalism. This interest continued when he moved to California, where he specialized in painting landscapes and seascapes.
Gutknecht died in April 1988 after having fought for most of his life against the debilitating disease muscular dystrophy. His art now appears in collections throughout Europe and the United States, where it remains his legacy of joy and happiness for thousands of people.
