Pneumotoxicosis in Sheep Caused by Ingestion of Trema Micrantha2012 •
Poisonous plants affecting cattle in the Brazilian Central-Western region are reviewed. The most important poisonous plants in the region are Brachiaria spp., which cause hepatogenous photosensitization, and Palicourea marcgravii and Mascagnia pubiflora, which cause sudden death precipitated by exercise. Enterolobium contortisiliquum, Stryphnodendron obovatum, and Stryphnodendron fissuratum are trees whose pods cause digestive signs, photosensitization, and abortion. Vernonia mollissima and V. rubricaulis cause acute liver necrosis, but V. rubricaulis is much more important than V. mollisima as a cause of cattle losses. Other less important plants are Solanum glaucophyllum, which causes soft tissue calcification; Ipomoea carnea subsp. fistulosa, which causes nervous signs; Senna occidentalis and Senna obtusifolia, which cause segmental muscular necrosis; Tetrapterys multiglandulosa, which causes cardiac fibrosis, abortion, and neonatal mortality; Polygala klotzschii, which causes ly...

Acute and sub-acute toxicity study of Trema orientalis (L.) Bl. methanol extract in rats2019 •
The medicinal plants find wide applications in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural and food industry. Trema orientalis has emerged as a good source of phytomedicine. T. orientalis has beneficial therapeutic properties, and indicates that it has potential as an effective herbal remedy for several diseases. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the acute and sub-acute toxicity of methanol powder extract of aerial part of Trema orientalis. There were no major changes in the body weight of animal treated with plant extract. The biochemical parameters like ALP, SGPT, SGOT, total protein, globulin, albumin and bilirubin were within the normal limit in the plant extract treated groups of animals. The present study shows that the methanolic extract of Trema orientalis is safe in lower dose for pharmaceutical analysis. Plant poisonings in livestock in Brazil and South Africa2015 •
2011 •
Colombia has the second largest plant biodiversity of any country in the world, with about 25,000 species of vascular plants. This is due in part to its equatorial location, and large variation in elevation and associated gradients in temperatures and rainfall. Livestock in Colombia graze vast tracts of land with a wide variety of herbaceous and woody plants. Although the annual cattle mortality from plant poisoning in Colombia is estimated at 130,000, the economic impact on the entire livestock industry has not been fully evaluated. Information on toxic plants is scarce in Colombia, and livestock poisoning by plants is seldom documented. This review presents the current knowledge on the identity of plants known to have poisoned livestock in Colombia and on research conducted into these toxic plants. To the extent known, the toxic component(s), major clinical signs and circumstances of poisoning, location, and environmental factors are discussed. Many of the plants identified in Col...

Natural and Experimental Poisoning of Cattle by Enterolobium contortisiliquum Pods (Fabaceae Mimosoideae) in Central-Western Brazil2009 •
Enterolobium contortisiliquum pods are commonly identified as being the cause of abortions and photosensitivity in cattle. This paper describes the clinical and pathological aspects of a natural outbreak of hepatogenous photosensitization by the pods of E. contortisiliquum in Brazil and the results of experimental poisoning in three bovines. The history of natural poisoning was obtained at the site of the outbreak. Clinical examinations were carried out and hepatic enzymes were analyzed. A post-mortem examination was carried out at the outbreak location on a cow that had died. Several samples were collected from the animal's internal organs to carry out histopathological examinations. E. contortisiliquum pods were given to cows in order to reproduce the disease. The natural poisonings were characterized by photosensitization and aborted young. Enterolobium photosensitization was not experimentally reproduced, but the animals fell sick and recovered after 52 days.

Recently several philosophers have argued that racial, gender, and other social generic generalizations should be avoided given their propensity to promote essentialist thinking, obscure the social nature of categories, and contribute to oppression. Here I argue that a general prohibition against social generics goes too far. Given that the truth of many generics require regularities or systematic rather than mere accidental correlations, they are our best means for describing structural forms of violence and discrimination. Moreover, their accuracy, their persistence in the face of counterexamples, and features of the contemporary socio-political context make generics useful linguistic tools in social justice projects.
