A Full Scale Superconducting Magnetic Levitation (MagLev) Vehicle Operational Line2015 •
2003 •
This research provides a study of an innovative Light Rail Maglev system that can obtain simultaneously the levitation, propulsion, and guidance of vehicles, and provides environmentally sound options for urban transit. The Maglev system uses a short vehicle supported by magnetic forces employing high temperature superconductor materials. The system's primary characteristics are presented and discussed.

Maglev by a Passive HTC Superconducting Short "Runner" Above the Magnetic Guideway2004 •
This paper describes how an experimental ring model device employing a high critical temperature superconductor (HTcS) short "runner" above the circular iron-homopolar magnetic guideway was designed and manufactured. The device simulates, by analogy, the electromagnetic behavior of a magnetically levitated vehicle, with passive short superconductor "runners" on board, riding along a magnetic track. In the wide range of work conditions magnetic levitation experiments were conducted and lift and drag forces were measured. Numerical analyses by two-dimensional finite element parametric models were carried out; the results are presented in terms of forces and flux density distribution.

Characterization Method of the V-shaped High-Temperature Superconducting Maglev Module for Transport System ApplicationsIt is now recognized that high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology has a significant potential for future magnetic levitation (Maglev) transit system applications due to the advantages of self-stable levitation, being free of electric power and magnetic drag to the vehicle motion, and system simplicity. This article provides a characterization method of the experimental transport system Maglev levitation module developed at the University of L’Aquila (Italy). More specifically, the lifting and guiding behavior of a single V-shaped Maglev module, which is unique for this type of application, is analyzed and tested. Its working principle is based on the interaction between HTS “skate” onboard of the vehicle and the magnetic field generated by the permanent magnets distributed on the guideway (PMG). A single scaled levitation module was built and tested under quasi-static conditions using dedicated measuring equipment by varying system parameters such as vertical gap, lateral ...
Efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change being made in the world can be successful only if transport efficiency would be improved. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) cars fuel consumption and CO2 emissions around the world will grow in about two times from 2000 to 2050. Today, the transport sector is responsible for 23-24% of global CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion (the share of road transport is 17-18%). On the other hand the transportation systems have in principle exhausted potentialities of development thereof over the recent 30 years. The reason is that it is actually not possible to develop highly efficient transportation system on the base of passed century technologies. A critical factor for the transportation system is how a transport module interacts with a motion environment (air, rail, highway). Therefore, comparing the transportation systems requires that the environment interaction efficiency should be accounted. Reduce energy consumption of vehicles is impossible without solving the problem of wheels rolling friction and aerodynamic friction. It is known that a car in the city spent only about 8-10% of the fuel thermal energy, about 70% goes to heating the air (engine efficiency of 30%), and 20% - for the heating the road. Our goal is to develop a low-cost, all-weather magnetic levitation transport system for passenger and cargo traffic, based on a giant diamagnetic effect and Meissner effect at normal temperatures.
