This study investigated the potential of Roystonea regia fruit pericarp for use as food and medicine. This was done by comparatively assessing the mineral, proximate and phytochemical compositions of ripe and unripe fruit pericarps. Results of phytochemical screening of the pericarp ethanol extract showed that reducing sugar, tannin, saponin, cardiac glycoside, alkaloid, phenolic and flavonoid were present in both ripe and unripe fruit pericarps while anthocyanosides and anthraquinones were not detected in both. Results of the proximate analysis showed that the ripe pericarp contained more moisture (7.58 %), crude protein (8.07 %), ash (11.14 %), fat (9.80 %) and carbohydrate (39.86 %) while the unripe pericarp contained more dry matter (92.90 %) and crude fibre (30.56 %). However, results of the mineral analysis showed that Ca, Mg, K, Na, Mn, Fe, Zn and Ni were higher in the unripe pericarp while both pericarps had the same concentration of P (119.95± mg/100g). Co, Cd and Pb were n...
The leaves of Gossypium hirsutum L. and Momordica charantia L. were analysed for phytochemical, proximate and mineral compositions. The qualitative phytochemical screening from the two plants revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and cardiac glycosides whereas terpenoids and steroids were absent. Subsequent quantification analysis revealed that G. hirsutum contained 12.20± 0.28% alkaloids, 2.63±0.04 % saponins, 11.90±0.4 % flavonoids, 2.73 mg/100g tannins and 1.62±0.00 mg/100g total phenol. Momordica charantia contained 13.60±0.00 % alkaloids, 2.30±0.00 % saponins, 7.20±0.00 % flavonoids, 1.37±0.00 mg/100g tannins and 0.74 ±0.00mg/100g total phenol. Proximate analysis revealed that carbohydrate had the highest percentage in G. hirsutum and M. charantia (46.66±0.31% and 57.92± 0.04 % respectively). Crude protein had the lowest percentages of 2.70±0.01% and 2.46 ± 0.03% in G. hirsutum and M. charantia. Mineral analysis revealed that potassium had the highes...

Plants derived bioactive compounds have been the centre of recent research owing to their health promoting effects. An attempt was made in evaluating the phytochemical, minerals, proximate and anti-microbial activity of analyses standard agar well diffusion method saponins, tannins, flavon minerals analysis revealed the presence of manganese and phosphorus. Highest mineral content was recorded in magnesium (21. Proximate analysis showed the presence of ash (10.3%), moisture (7.10%), protein (16.45%), (6.10%), fibre (10.99%) and carbohydrate (40.20%). of the plant against Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed that leaves w against various diseases associated with the tested organisms

Nutraceutical and Antioxidant Properties of the Seeds, Leaves and Fruits of Carica papaya: Potential Relevance to Humans Diet, the Food Industry and the Pharmaceutical Industry - A ReviewPawpaw (Carica papaya Linn) seeds, peels and leaves are well known for their medicinal and potent pharmacological values. The plant belongs to the family Caricaceae and its fruit is commonly known for its food and nutritional values. Though the roots, bark, peel, pulp and the seeds had been shown to have medicinal properties, little is known about their nutritional properties. During the last few years, there had been series of research to explore further pharmacological and medicinal properties as well as it nutritional qualities of these plants parts, thus giving rise to it nutraceutical abilities. Scientific attempts have also been made over the decades to authenticate its nutraceutical properties. While nutritional constituents such as oil, proteins, and minerals haven been characterised from its seeds, little is known about other parts of the plant. Though the nutraceutical properties of papaya as drug or quasi-food product are not well understood or value, still it is an impor...

Proximate and Elemental Analyses, Phytochemical Screening and Antioxidant Activities of Aqueous and Ethanol Extracts of Solanum Incanum Linn. Fruits2021 •
Solanum incanum Linn. (Solanaceae) is a perennial bushy herb used to stained teeth among the Kanuri women and in making vegetable soups. This study determined proximate and elemental contents, phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activities of the fruit. The proximate analyses showed the presence of crude fibre, carbonhydrate and crude protein while the elemental analyses revealed the presence of magnesium, calcium and sodium. The fruit contains; saponins, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, cardenolite, glycosides, reducing sugars, phenolics content and flavonoids content. The results of antioxidant showed that the EC50 values for DPPH radicals with aqueous and ethanol fruit extracts of the S. incanum Linn. were found to be 0.02488 and 0.1000 mg/ml, respectively. The aqueous extract showed EC50 value lower than ethanol extract. In conclusion, this results suggested that aqueous extract of S. incanum Linn might contain more potential antioxidant compounds than ethanol extract.

Proximate, phytochemical screening and mineral analysis of Crescentia cujete L. leaves2018 •
To determine the nutrient composition of vegetables four diff erent green leafy vegetables were collected and analyzed which are commonly cultivated in Sargodha city. These vegetables are Brassica campestris, Raphinus sativas, Coriandrum sativum and Spinacea oleracea. From the Overall all varieties have good source of nutrients and minerals but Results show that Coriandum sativum had the highest amount of moisture (89.47 %) While Raphinus sativas had highest ash(0.83%).The highest values of crude fibre, protein, lipid and Carbohydrates were found in Corchorus olitorius 0.33%, 6.21%, 5.08%, 6.25% respectively.

The proximate, elemental and phytochemical compositions of the leaves of Pterocarpus soyauxii (Oha) were studied. The results obtained for the proximate composition showed the following: moisture content (17.2%), ash content (5.7%), crude fibre (17.2%), crude protein (29.5%), crude fat (4.15%) and carbohydrates (25.95%). The results of the mineral (elemental) analysis in mg/L showed the following to be present in the leaves: Ca (4.04), Cu (0.20), Zn (1.39), Mg (41.0), K (0.31), Mn (0.17), Na (32.0) and Fe (0.60) with Pb and Cr absent. The leaves also contained vitamin A (0.2044 mg/g) and vitamin C (0.4470 mg/g). The phytochemical analysis of different solvent extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, glycosides and tannins. Flavonoids, phenols and steroids were absent. These findings showed that the leaves of Pterocarpus soyauxii are good sources of beneficial micronutrients, mineral elements and secondary metabolites which are required for healthy growth, justifying the ...

Proximate, phytochemical screening and mineral analysis of Crescentia cujete L. leaves2018 •
Background: One of the uses of Crescentia cujete leaves is in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, which necessitated the evaluation of its chemical composition.Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the chemical composition of C. cujete leaves.Setting: Fresh, mature leaves were harvested from the Herbal Garden, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Jericho Hill, Ibadan, Nigeria. The plant samples were identified at Forest Herbarium, Ibadan, Nigeria, sorted to eliminate extraneous matter and then air-dried on a cabinet dryer for five days at ambient temperature and oven-dried at 40°C for five minutes. The dried leaves were milled to powder using a medium-sized milling machine and stored in an air-tight container until needed for analysis. Methods: The proximate composition, phytochemical screening and mineral analysis were determined using standard analytic methods. Minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, manganese and magnesium were determined by the atomic absorption spe...
