Crystal Renn Hits the Runways

It was great to see Crystal Renn in three of the biggest Paris fashion shows this week: Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Zac Posen (above). Renn is not your typical waif: as a size 10, she's usually referred to as a "plus size model." (We know—that clothing size, plus the photo above, hardly scream "heavy!" It's all relative.) But this week she was just another beautiful face on the runway—not part of some stunt to cast "larger" women. As she told People, "I'm here being treated like any other girl. It doesn't matter my size. I'm going on castings like everybody else."

Her presence was in contrast to the spread she did for French Vogue last month, in which she posed with enormous plates of pasta, chicken, and mashed potatoes. The images may have been intended as a commentary on gluttony and excess—not an indictment of her size—but there was still the unfortunate fact that when the magazine chose to show a larger woman, she was stuffing her face.

What do you think: Do you see Renn as a representative of different body shapes, or simply another gorgeous model?
