It should be noted that one of the American owners of Crystal Palace, John Textor, just bought the majority share of RWD Molenbeek. Montes also grew up playing for the FC Florida Prep youth academy that Textor set-up. Coincidentally, Waasland Beveren is majority owned by CP’s other owner and new RSL owner David Blitzer. So lots of connections!

Has moved on loan to Brazil:

Botafogo has agreed to the loan signing of the 23-year-old naturalized American midfielder Jacob Montes , who belongs to Crystal Palace , one of the clubs in John Textor 's network . The information is from journalist Thiago Franklin on Twitter.

Montes arrives in Rio de Janeiro this Sunday morning (26/6). His last loan was to RWD Molenbeek in the first half, having played just one game. Earlier, he made nine appearances and scored one goal for Waasland-Beveren , also in Belgium's second division.

This would put him at the same club as possible Yank Sebastian Joffre, who is also contracted to CP.

I'm so happy he has changed clubs because RWDM was among the worst clubs ever at that level in terms of their Twitter updates and it was almost impossible to find the club on TM & SoccerWay for updates.

As noted before, both Montes and Joffre are connected to Textor through FC Florida. In Joffre’s case, he was unattached for about three years after leaving Orlando City B before signing with Crystal Palace and eventually Botafogo.

But hey, their connections are their connections and when the guy owns the club, guess he can do what he wants. Did see some talk of Botafogo fans not necessarily being happy by the move even if they maybe aren’t with the first team in mind.

Also found these (translated) notes on Montes. There was some prior posts in the thread about a potential Nicaragua call up and it indeed looks that was in the works before a national team coaching switch and his injury during the second half of last season:

On the bench for the 1st team tonight:

Seems to be his first chance for an appearance:

The American Jacob Montes was listed for the game against Goiás, and for the first time he can have his chance to play for Botafogo today, 09/28.

It is also worth remembering, of course, that the midfielder has never had contact in his career with a technical level of play similar to that practiced in Brazilian football.

Wow, many Botafogo fans were not happy with his signing and thought he was not much more than Textor's toy while never having much of a realistic chance to contribute to the first team.

Cool to see him on the bench at least - maybe he's done some good things in the eyes of the staff, or maybe it's Textor's influence putting his name there... we'll see how it shakes out in the end.

He seems to be leading the voting for best midfielder of the match (at the time of posting):

This is awesome! He's totally flipped the Botafogo crowd with his performance and getting heaps of praise from fans. That includes for this sequence, which was almost an assist:

Seems fans did such a 180 in their perception of him that he's achieved some sort of cult status:

Already a great example of someone making the most of their opportunities and it did turn out that he won the support of the manager through training.

Also shows how important fit is for a player and club - sure he didn't get time in the Belgian second division, but he's convinced his club that he can play a role with a better team in a better league regardless of the circumstances around his arrival. That's what it's all about versus the sometimes common black-and-white assessments of talent evaluation.

Will be really cool to see where he takes it - hopefully he has lots of success and keeps building on the great progress there.
