Bade Miyan Chote Miyan had a poor weekend, collecting around Rs. 40 crores. It is a big blow for its lead actor Akshay Kumar, who had a dream run from 2016 to 2019 but is struggling in the post-pandemic era.

Akshay Kumar has had 9 releases in post-Covid out of which 6 were flops - Bellbottom [Rs. 30.63 cr.], Bachchhan Paandey [Rs. 49.98 cr.], Samrat Prithviraj [Rs. 68.05 cr.], Raksha Bandhan [Rs. 44.39 cr.], Selfiee [Rs. 16.85 cr.] and Mission Raniganj [Rs. 33.74 cr.]. While 2 films – Sooryavanshi [Rs. 196 cr.] and OMG 2 [Rs. 150.17 cr.] – were super hits, Ram Setu [Rs. 71.87 cr.] was an average grosser. The average lifetime collection of his films in the post-Covid era is just Rs. 78 crores. This includes Sooryavanshi and OMG 2 and if you remove these two successful films, the average lifetime falls to Rs. 50 crores. The total lifetime earnings of all his films is around Rs. 700 crores of which approximately 50% of collections [Rs. 346.17 cr.] has come from Sooryavanshi and OMG 2.

Trade guru Komal Nahta exclusively spoke to Bollywood Hungama about what went wrong with this actor, who’s a great performer and who has a sizable following among the audience. He opined, “This can happen to anybody, anytime. Suddenly, your judgment of stories goes wrong. There comes a spell when everything that you are selecting, turns out to be what you should not be selecting.”

He further said, “A lot of factors seems to have gone against him post Covid – choice of subjects, too many films – resulting in the situation. The audience likes stars who are not politically inclined on any side. This is not the case down South. But the Hindi film audience wants their heroes to be perceived as neutral or are actually neutral. Maybe that has gone against him. It also could be an overdose of his films. He does a minimum of 4 films a year. That’s too much exposure. Even before, he was doing so many films. But a saturation point will come one day.”

Akshay Kumar along with his Bade Miyan Chote Miyan co-star Tiger Shroff were recently seen on the show of Ranveer Allahbadia aka BeerBiceps. On this Komal Nahta rued, “Akshay doesn’t promote films or promotes them on the wrong platform. BeerBiceps asked him risqué questions that were not related to films. But your agenda should be to promote your film. Whoever has seen the interview feels that Akshay has been ridiculed no end.”

He continued, “One might argue that even Shah Rukh Khan didn’t promote his films. But everybody can’t be Shah Rukh Khan. You have not given a Jawan or a Pathaan. Nothing is two plus two equals four in this industry. Each case is different, each hero is different and each film is different. For one film, you may get away without promoting but for the second film, lack of promotion may cost you dear.”

However, all is not lost for Akshay. He has exciting films lined up like Sarfira, Skyforce and the much-awaited comic caper, Welcome To The Jungle. Komal Nahta stated, “I sincerely believe that if the film is good, everything evens out. So, if these films get public acceptance, they will work. It’s not like his career is over. But definitely, it’s the worst patch of his career.”

When prodded, he explained, “This is like a rejection of his films. This also doesn’t mean that he has been rejected or that he cannot strike back. He needs to pull up his socks and think about all these points. These are testifiable and not random points.”

Komal Nahta also complained about his performance in the recent release, “In Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, I got the feeling that he’s totally disinterested. I am not sure if that was true but that is what many came across. And many have felt that. So many people can’t be wrong, right? And if so many people are wrong, you should do something to set that right.”
