Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott Are Engaged!

After four years of dating, Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott are taking their relationship to the next level: The New Girl star and the Property Brothers host are engaged. On August 13, 2023, Scott got down on one knee while the couple was enjoying a family trip in Scotland, People reports. According to the outlet, Deschanel’s two children, Elsie and Charlie whom she shares with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik, played a pivotal role in the proposal. 

The couple first shared the news with their fans via a joint Instagram post. “Forever starts now!!! 🥰♾️🥰,” the duo writes. To announce the exciting moment, Deschanel and Scott uploaded a selfie of themselves smiling at the camera in front of a stone castle. Friends, family, and many more of the pair’s followers commented on the Instagram post, seemingly overjoyed at the announcement. “Omg!!! So amazing Zooey! Congrats!! ❤️,” Mindy Kaling gushes. Fellow actress Courtney Cox also shared her well-wishes: “That’s so exciting! Congratulations !!!❤️❤️❤️,” she says. Even the official Instagram for Scott’s Property Brothers chimed in. “Welcome to the family, @zooeydeschanel!!” the HGTV reality series social media account expresses. 

The picture also shows the 500 Days of Summer actress showing off her pink manicure and flashing her unique engagement ring. According to diamond expert Zack Stone of fine jeweler Steven Stone, her sparkler features a purple sapphire and two diamonds. Stone explains that purple sapphires are an unexpected yet meaningful choice. “Associated with wisdom, love, compassion, and forgiveness, purple sapphires are thought to bring their wearer good fortune and spiritual insight,” Stone says.

The ring also has a nature-inspired motif, with two of the stones resembling a flower and the third shaped like a star. “Flowers have long been gifted as a symbol of love, friendship, and affection,” Stone explains. “Thus, it’s safe to say Jonathan’s choice to include flower patterns was a romantic one that encapsulates the couple’s loving relationship.” Smaller pink stones, seemingly pink sapphires, also appear in the outer corners. Jewelry expert Neil Dutta, managing director of Angelic Diamonds, estimates that the ring is four carats.

Deschanel and Scott first met in August 2019 while filming an episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke along with Deschanel’s sister, Emily, and Scott’s twin brother, Drew. After filming, the four of them went out to Los Angeles to sing karaoke. “They were all talented and spontaneous, and they had a really fun time shooting the show,” a source told People. “They became friends after and then started talking as friends and realized there was more to it.” Scott later admitted that he was “flirting so hard” with Deschanel the day they met, so the producers had to “cut a bunch of it out.” “I thought I was playing it cool,” he joked. 

A month after they first connected, Deschanel and Scott were spotted holding hands while grabbing dinner together. Later that month, they seemed to verify the dating rumors by sharing a kiss while sitting in the front row during a taping of Dancing With the Stars. The duo officially confirmed their relationship on Instagram in October 2019 with a group photo that pictures Scott holding Deschanel in his arms.
