Character Analysis

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Grew Up... in an ordinary nuclear family in Massachusetts with his parents and younger sister, Samantha. When he was 12 years old, his sister was abducted by what Mulder insists were alien beings. That was a formative moment for him and led to his ever-continuing belief in the paranormal and extraterrestrial life.

Living... in a Washington D.C. apartment. His bedroom is filled with case materials, so he usually ends up sleeping on his couch. Mulder appears to have very little attachment to the place.

Profession... working for the FBI on the “X-Files,” cases that involve paranormal activity and are deemed "unsolvable" by the rest of the agency.

Interests... work. Mulder's relationship to his job is the pinnacle of mixing work and pleasure. His investigations often go well past what is necessary for the given case and satisfy his never-ending thirst to know more. He still feels responsible for uncovering the truth about what really happened to his sister, and is beginning to identify a large and threatening government conspiracy.

Relationship Status... single. His close relationship with his FBI partner, Agent Dana Scully, often seems more than platonic. His desire to protect and care for her goes far beyond the line of duty; one can't help but notice the romantic tension between the two.

Challenge... uncovering "the truth" and proving to his colleagues that his obsession with the paranormal is justified. Mulder is wholeheartedly convinced that there is "something out there,” whether that “something” is the existence of alien life, a government cover-up, or both. But he often has difficulty maintaining objectivity in his investigations and lets his personal feelings and emotions get in the way of logical thought. He does have a strong case, however, and as he puts it, "You can deny all the things I've seen, all the things I've discovered, but not for much longer because too many others know what's happening out there. And no one, no government agency, has jurisdiction over the truth."

Personality... enthusiastic, though often to a fault, and set in his ways. Even those who know him best struggle to describe him, like Scully: "He's a jerk. No, he's not a jerk. He's, um... he's obsessed with his work." Mulder is so consumed with his beliefs that he can come off as an eccentric, fervently attempting to convince everyone around him, especially Scully, of extraterrestrial life. Still, he refuses to ever let up in his pursuit for truth.
