This 1,000-HP Chevelle Is A Perfect Balance Of Style And Performance

The 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle is an iconic American muscle car that has captivated car enthusiasts for decades. This particular Chevelle, owned by Jeff Williams and built by Mile High Muscle, stands out among the crowd. This blue beauty underwent an extensive transformation, combining classic aesthetics with modern power and performance. With its powerful engine, upgraded chassis, meticulous attention to detail as well as a range of other enhancements, this Chevelle is a true testament to the art of reinvention in the automotive world.

The Chevelle Builds A Friendship And A Business

Jeff’s journey with his 1969 Chevelle began when he spotted it online. Its flashy Mediterranean Blue color from the Maserati color palette immediately caught Jeff’s attention. After winning the car in an online auction, he enjoyed driving it around town for pleasure. However, it quickly became apparent that the Chevelle needed work, leaving Jeff in search of a solution.

The Chevelle fostered a friendship between Jeff and Jared which formed into the business called Mile High Muscle.

He found an ally in Jared Gastineau, an expert technician at the local Chevrolet dealership who has a passion for older muscle cars, especially second-generation Chevelles. Recognizing the potential of the Chevelle, Gastineau made some recommendations for upgrading the car. These included a new suspension, a complete rewire, and a crate engine. The duo’s friendship eventually led to the creation of Mile High Muscle, a business dedicated to crafting high-performance and high-quality muscle cars.

The Pump Gas Powerhouse

At the heart of this remarkable Chevelle is the Chevrolet Performance ZZ632/1000 Deluxe crate engine, which stands as Chevrolet’s most powerful crate engine to date. With its exceptional power output of over 1,000 horsepower on 93-octane pump gas, the ZZ632/1000 commands attention.

This tall-deck, big-block V8 powerhouse boasts a displacement of 632 cubic inches and features several notable specifications. The iron Bowtie block with four-bolt main caps ensures durability and stability, while the forged 4340 steel crankshaft, forged steel H-beam connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons provide strength with a minimal mass of the rotating assembly.

The induction system on the 632/1000 does need a little room. The custom-built hood on Jeff's car is designed to cover the tall intake while paying homage to the cowl induction hood of days past.

The engine is equipped with a substantial, aluminum high-rise single-plane intake manifold, which makes keeping the power unit under the hood a challenge. A 4500-style throttle body and 86 lb/hr fuel injectors help get the air and fuel into the cylinders to deliver an exhilarating experience from inside the car. The hydraulic roller camshaft with a valve lift of 0.780 inch on the intake side and 0.782 inch on the exhaust side delivers a lumpy idle and deep throaty noise at all RPM.

The cylinder heads are made of lightweight aluminum, with 70cc chambers and titanium valves, further adding to the sensory overload when you hear this thing run. With a compression ratio of 12:1 and a 7,000 rpm redline, this engine delivers exhilarating performance that truly defines this classy, yet raucous Chevelle.

The Chevelle’s Chassis

To effectively harness the immense power of the ZZ632/1000 engine, Mile High Muscle installed a Speedtech Performance ExtReme chassis with a torque arm rear suspension. This aftermarket chassis offers the necessary strength and stability required to transform the Chevelle into a pro-touring classic. The ExtReme chassis, designed specifically for GM A-Body vehicles like the Chevelle, features a triple-box design. The frame is a welded construction with tabbed-through-frame gussets, designed to enhance torsional rigidity and overall stability.

The torque arm rear suspension system plays a crucial role in distributing loads evenly throughout the chassis, effectively reducing pitch and providing better control and handling. Furthermore, the design minimizes changes in pinion angle, resulting in improved traction and stability during acceleration.

The Chevelle features a Speedtech ExReme chassis, which allows Jeff to put down as much power as those meaty tires will allow.

The ExtReme chassis not only enhances the Chevelle’s handling and acceleration but also offers excellent comfort on the street and durability for autocross and track days.

Additional Features Of This Custom 1969 Chevelle

Rounding out the drivetrain is a TREMEC TKO five-speed gearbox. All Speedtech Performance chassis come with a 9-inch rearend housing. A set of gears spec’d to a ratio of 4.30:1 really help the car accelerate in a most astonishing fashion.

Steering on the ExtReme chassis is managed with a dual-power rack with origins in NASCAR racing. The rack has the durability to stand up to street driving a pro-touring car with massive front tires. The brakes are beefy Wilwood AERO6 fronts and Dynalites in the rear to get the car slowed down in a hurry, which is very important with 1,000 horsepower on tap. The car is connected to the road via Nitto G2 tires that are wrapped over Schott Mod 5 eXL wheels. Jared says the car would have easily accepted a 315 or larger tire in the front, however, Jeff wanted that classic muscle car look, so they opted for 235/40-18 on an 8-inch rim in the front with 335/30-18 on a 12-inch rim in the rear.

Those 18-inch Schott wheels fill up the openings and allow those Wilwood brakes plenty of air for cooling.

To further optimize the car’s performance, the builders at Mile High Muscle incorporated a custom exhaust system made from stainless steel. This high-quality material not only offers durability, but also reduces weight and looks fantastic. The custom headers and exhaust were meticulously designed to maximize airflow and minimize restrictions, resulting in improved horsepower and torque. The entire exhaust system is tucked up under the chassis, keeping the bottom looking clean and tidy. The aggressive roar emanating from the Chevelle’s exhaust system is a testament to its power and performance.

Moving on to the interior, the 1969 Chevelle features a stock black vinyl interior that complements the exterior’s blue color. Every detail of the interior was carefully considered to maintain the Chevelle’s originality. The dash controls appear stock, and the car is running Vintage Air to keep things cool on those warm summer days.

The interior retains much of the classic styling but with upgrades thanks to Classic Dash, Vintage Air, and AutoMeter.

The Classic Dash dashboard has been updated with AutoMeter gauges that give the driver all the necessary information at a glance. There is also a shift light on the left side of the steering wheel. The unassuming interior downplays the extensive modifications to the car and its performance potential, which will leave you speechless, or make you giggle like a little kid.

The team at Mile High Muscle 3D printed the custom 632 emblems used throughout the build. The idea was to make the car appear as close as possible to what Chevy might have built with today's technology.

This 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle is a masterpiece of automotive craftsmanship and customization. From its stunning blue exterior to its powerful engine, advanced suspension, classic interior, and high-performance wheels and tires; this Chevelle represents the epitome of an All-American muscle car. Whether you’re a fan of classic cars or simply appreciate the beauty of a well-built machine, this Chevelle is sure to impress. The Chevelle’s perfect balance of style and performance has solidified its place as one of the greatest muscle cars of all time. This particular Chevelle is continuing to use that balance to cement its greatness in today’s world.
