PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago – There was a familiar face in Honduras camp as the Bicolor assembled earlier this week to prepare for World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago (Friday, away) and the United States (September 5, home).
It was striker Carlo Costly, a man who has played and 65 international matches and delivered 30 goals, including one against Ecuador in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The 35-year-old is back with the squad for the first time since March 2016 and his teammates couldn’t be happier.
“I think that a player like him in the national team always gives something more,” said forward Antony Lozano. “He comes in to contribute like everyone. I think we have to give him confidence and that he feels important in the team. For us, it is important to have him.”
Costly, who has scored three goals in four games during the 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League, brings leadership and proven production to a team that is currently fifth in the CONCACAF Hexagonal (1W-2D-3L, 5 points).
“We know about Carlo’s quality. He’s an experienced player who’s been through it all,” midfielder Jorge Claros commented. “It defines who he is. It speaks to his qualities and to what he has always contributed to the national team. We hope he continues giving his grain of sand.”
Coincidentally, Costly’s first-ever goal for Honduras was scored in a 3-1 over the visiting Trinidadians on June 2, 2007.
