'We are very advanced in our negotiations and it was good to see him score against Juventus': Inter Milan close to completing Diego Godin transfer, says chief Giuseppe Marotta

  • Diego Godin has not renewed his contract with Atletico, which expires in June
  • He has spent nine years with the capital city club, winning eight trophies
  • Inter chief Giuseppe Marotta said they will make an official announcement soon

Diego Godin is close to agreeing a deal to join Inter Milan this summer, according to the club's chief executive Giuseppe Marotta.

The Uruguayan is regarded as one of the world's leading centre-halves, however his contract with Atletico expires this summer and the 33-year-old has not agreed a new deal.

He is set to bring an end to his nine-year stay with the capital city club and Inter chief Marotta believes they are close to unveiling the defender.

'I do think that we can make the announcement official shortly.'

Godin endeared himself to his potential new employers by scoring against Serie A champions Juventus on Wednesday.

Compatriot and defensive partner Jose Giminez also found the net as Atletico established an impressive 2-0 lead in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie.

Europe's top prize is the one trophy that has eluded Godin during his decorated time with Atleti.

The central defender famously helped to win the league title for the first time in 18 years in 2014, a year after winning the Copa del Rey.

Atleti won the Europa League twice during his time at the club, in 2012 and 2018, but they also lost two painful Champions League finals to city rivals Real Madrid.

Godin joined Atletico for a reported £6.6million from Villarreal, and has so far made 377 appearances for the club. He is also capped 125 times by Uruguay.

Inter will play Eintracht Frankfurt in the last 16 of the Europa League.
