England 0-0 Costa Rica World Cup 2014 LIVE: Three Lions bow out with goalless draw
- England starting XI: Foster, Jones, Cahill, Smalling, Shaw, Milner, Lampard, Wilshere, Barkley, Lallana, Sturridge
- Frank Lampard to captain England in final World Cup match
- Three Lions set to field much changed side for dead rubber
- Roy Hodgson's team already out after defeats by Italy and Uruguay
- Costa Rica chasing top spot after causing major shock to reach last 16
The modern demand around England is to take the positives, so here goes. Roy Hodgson’s team ended their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against the world champions.
Not world champions that you or I might recognise as such, of course. Not world champions as crowned by FIFA, at a World Cup.
But if we took every international football match played since the game’s inception, with England the first world champions, earning the crown by beating Scotland, and awarded that title to the victors each time the champions were defeated, then Italy were world champions as of Friday. They then lost to Costa Rica.

So England are going home with just one point, but on the way back to Europe they will be dragging Italy with them after the Italians were eliminated following a controversial defeat by Uruguay.
Click on the homepage for more (including Luis Suarez being involved in another biting scandal), but our live action isn't quite finished with Group C's finale coming up very shortly. Thanks for following folks - I'll see you there.
'Seemed to be scuffles in the crowd among a few England fans and locals, the England fans presumably goaded by the constant chants of ‘Eliminated.’ Riot police briefly arrived but it cleared up quickly.'
'Roy Hodgson just ran across the pitch to join in applause of England fans. Seemed to get a warm reception.'
Costa Rica win Group D and progress to the last 16.
90+1min: England's World Cup campaign has been given three extra minutes...
89min: Of course not. Gerrard lofts a curling cross to the back post but Wayne Rooney just misses out on connecting with a header.
So near yet so far - the story of England's World Cup.
88min: Free-kick to England 30 yards out who have no doubt controlled the large majority of this match. Can they steal a late winner?
85min: This game is petering out into nothing, but get yourselves over to the Italy-Uruguay game by clicking here because it's all happening!
Uruguay have taken the lead inside the last 10 minutes to put them on course for the last 16, but Luis Suarez is once again involved in ANOTHER shocking biting allegation.
'So now it’s becoming an England old boys’ reunion, with Gerrard and Rooney on to join Lampard. Trying to remember when they won anything together. Maybe it will be this match.'
81min: Just half-chances are falling for England now, but Rooney goes close with a skillful chip from the edge of the box which just creeps over the crossbar.
78min: Michael Barrantes replaces Celso Borges in Costa Rica's last change.
76min: Final switch from England as Wayne Rooney replaces James Milner.
'You just cannot believe that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are the middle two in England’s midfield. Let’s get out of here.'
From Sportsmail's Jeff Powell in Belo Horizonte:
'It is possible to put a dent in your reputation even in meaningless matches. Sturridge could do with taking one of his chances.'
73min: For the first time in this half, Costa Rica are starting to take control, forcing England into a change.
Cheers greet Steven Gerrard as he comes on to replace Wilshere, reuniting that infamous midfield partnership of Lampard/Gerrard.
This will probably the last 15 minutes of it - I'm going to miss that debate over whether they can play together...
69min: Sturridge can play all night and not score! The striker collects a pass to sprint in on goal, but as he goes to pull the trigger, Gonzalez stabs in a tackle to poke the ball behind for a corner.
'So that’s Sterling in the middle, on the right and now on the left at this World Cup. Genius.'
65min: It's just not Sturridge's day. The striker plays a sharp one-two on the edge of the box, but after darting inside the box for the return pass, guides his shot narrowly wide across goal. In truth he must score.
Costa Rica make a change as Campbell is replaced by Marcos Urena.
'Commentators getting very excited about that challenge on Barkley who was going down well before any contact. It wasn’t ‘brutal’ by any stretch of the imagination.'
62min: Moments after Giancarlo Gonzalez is booked for a dangerous trip on Barkley, England make a change.
Adam Lallana departs and on comes Raheem Sterling.
59min: Christian Bolanos replaces Randall Brenes for Costa Rica.
'I'm afraid the more you see of Jack Wilshere in an England shirt, the more you have to agree with Paul Scholes that he hasn't improved since he broke into the Arsenal side.'
From Mail on Sunday's Rob Draper in Belo Horizonte:
'Think I would have Rooney on for the last half hour. England need a goal for morale’s sakes; he’s just broken is World Cup duck and would add extra energy.'
57min: No goals but the yellow cards are racking up for England as Lallana is booked for a sloppy sliding challenge on Ruiz.
'Haimoudi cautions Barkley after small foul because he failed to play a simple advantage.
'Poor officiating from a referee who is lucky to have a second game after the penalty he gave in the Australia v Netherlands game.'
'Hodgson hasn’t used his seat but he hasn’t climbed from the sunken dug-out either. A man very much in the trenches.'
From Mail on Sunday's Rob Draper in Belo Horizonte:
'Derision and bewilderment amongst locals at Phil Jones there. Jeer all round.'
53min: First booking for England as Barkley sees yellow for pulling back Durate's shirt, preventing a counter attack.
51min: More chances for England! Sturridge can only blame himself here though, as a deflection from Luke Shaw's shot falls into the Liverpool striker's path,
The heavy spin leads to poor control from the striker and it allows Navas to race off his line and make a crucial block.
In doing so, Navas stayed down after having a meeting with Sturridge's studs but following some treatment on his leg is fine to continue.
48min: Slight concerns for England as Lampard winces after his foot is stamped on in a sliding tackle, but England's captain is soon back to his feet after being given a moment or two to recover.
This is likely to be Frank Lampard's international send off, but I'm starting to think maybe his experience is being taken for granted.
He has kept the Three Lions' midfield ticking in this game, and it's preventing Roy's boys from being over run.
Here's his heat map from the first half.

However, I am worried by how easy it's becoming to leave the back-four in a mess with a simple long pass.
I can't think of a another team in this tournament who have been so simply undone by what is in effect a long clearance down field.
I'm a glass half-full chap when it comes to England and considering this is a team with very little playing time in tricky conditions, I think they have done well.
Sturridge and Barkley have had opportunities while they could have possibly had a penalty on another day following that lunge on the Liverpool striker
'Costa Rica indulging in a few party tricks – does every other country have superior skills to England? – but otherwise just going through the motions. But still goalless at half time. Spare us.'
From Mail on Sunday's Rob Draper in Belo Horizonte:
'Carbon copy of the Suarez goal at the end there – and if that was Luis Suarez rather than Randall Brenes, it would have been 1-0. Still, reasonably encouraging half for England’s young team.'
Worrying sign at the end of the half. Luke Luis Suarez's winner the other night, England are undone by a long 80-yard pass, but Randall Brenes' shot on goal is blocked by recovering defenders.
43min: In a current climate of misery for England they o seem to have a bright light emerging with Ross Barkley.
Cheers of anticipation rise around the ground as the Everton midfielder beats his marker to create a yard of space on the edge of the box, but he slices a shot wildly off target from 18 yards.
'ELIMINADO echoes around the ground again. Brazilians really not with England!'
41min: Costa Rica may have come closest by hitting the crossbar but England have been the better team in this half. The Three Lions are creating opportunities in the final third and look more likely to score before the break.
'It’s all very well and good the referee telling the Costa Rica defenders not to hold English opponents before the corners come in and in particular the one manhandling Gary Cahill but he has to act when the corner is taken or it’s all a waste of breath!'
35min: The nearly men come close to taking the lead again. Ross Barkley's lofted corner to the back post is headed back into the mixer by Phil Jones, allowing Sturridge to sneak in and nod just over the bar.
'No doubt who the locals are with but that Ruiz dummy on Wilshere confirmed it. Delighted roars all round.'
31min: Oh here we go, Costa Rica are applying the flicks and tricks now! Bryan Ruiz applies a silky roulette turn to spin Jack Wilshere, while Joel Campbell is playing back heel lay-offs.
If ever a team looked like they were enjoying a World Cup...
'Good defending by Costa Rica. Of course we want a penalty but whilst defender doesn’t play the ball he shields it cleverly and I can see why the referee doesn’t give it.'
28min: Question England's results but they really haven't had much fortune with referee decisions at this tournament. Controlling a knockdown isnide the box, Daniel Sturridge is poised to lash England in front... until Oscar Durate dives in to bring down the Liverpool hitman.
I think it's a penalty but Sportsmail's Graham Poll thinks otherwise...
26min: I can't help but think England are playing the nearly men in this group. Adam Lallana leads a promising attack down the right, but his eventual pass across goal falls just short of Jack Wilshere as Costa Rica scramble clear.
'Hodgson hasn’t sat down since this game started. Almost like he’s trying to create a sense of tension that just doesn’t exist here.'
23min: What a save from Foster! Celso Borges blasts the free-kick across goal and it's set for a meeting with the top corner until the West Brom stopper tips the effort on to the crossbar and over.
22min: Finally some action, the bad news though is Costa Rica have a free-kick 25 yards out after Adam Lallana trips Joel Campbell.
'Chanting stand off between England and Brazilians fans provoked by England fans failure to join in Mexican wave. ‘Eliminated,’ chant the Brazilians. ‘We’re going home,’ respond the England fans.'
From Sportsmail's Jeff Powell in Belo Horizonte:
'It’s Training Day. Nothing like the intensity, nothing like the pressing, nothing like the tackling, nothing like the pace, nothing like the body-on-the-line courage of the shot-blocking in the real matches here.'
19min: Sturridge is at least keen to have a shot and he nearly catches Navas out in the Costa Rica goal.
With a 25 yard long range effort, the Liverpool hitman lets fly with a dipping effort which just clears the crossbar.
Unlike his previous attempt though, the Costa Rica stopper looked like he had it covered.
16min: Costa Rica are in a spell of possession again, but are not doing much with it as they seem to pass aimlessly around the midfield.
England not that keen to press too high up in this heat but they look comfortable.
'A mischievous thought, this, but might there have been more of a point to this if the team which lost the first two games had been punished by making them play in this one?'
From Mail on Sunday's Rob Draper in Belo Horizonte:
'England fans have revived an old song as a new national anthem: ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.’ However, those early hoofs into the stands by Gary Cahill and Chris Smalling were met by jeers from the Brazilian fans – not impressed.'
13min: Close from England! James Milner plays a short pass to Daniel Sturridge 23 yards out, who unleashes a curling effort across goal which just sneaks wide of the post. It certainly had Keylor Navas at full stretch diving across goal.
'At least Luke Shaw wants the ball. The rest of England’s defence treat it as if it’s on fire.'
10min: Good news - England have woken up. The Three Lions are finally starting to have some influence on the ball, while Luke Shaw is making some encouraging runs down the left.
7min: England haven't got going yet with Costa Rica pressing high on the Three Lions so far. It's Ben Foster who we are seeing most of as Junior Diaz's cross from the left is overhit and flies wide.
'Agree with some of the comments already made. Slightly baffled by the presence of Lampard today if this is about the future.'
From Sportsmail's Charles Sale in Belo Horizonte:
'Prince Harry distancing himself from the FA delegation in the VIP front row at the Estadio Mineirao . He's in the middle while Greg Dyke and Trevor Brooking are sitting together at the extreme right.'
3min: The palm of my hand is already slapping my forehead as Costa Rica go within inches of taking the lead.
Arsenal's Joel Campbell has a snap shot from the edge of the box which takes a deflection off Gary Cahill before looping just wide of the post.
Even the referee feels sorry for England now as he somehow gives a Three Lions goal kick.
'England wearing their Nike-supplied "anthem" jackets. Another sign of the FA commercial focus going over the top.
'Roy Hodgson looking noticeably haggard in the dug out. May be he's starting to realise just how big a job managing England at a World Cup really is.'

...but full credit to the England crowd who you could hear sing and shout every word with passion.
Over to you England, give us something to smile about. (Please!!!!!)
The England fans give Roy's boys a cracking reception as they take to the field under the sun.
I'm getting my excuses in early this afternoon, these conditions are surely going to suit Costa Rica more than England. Just look how badly Italy struggled in them last Friday...
Ben Foster is the first West Brom player to represent England at a World Cup since 1970 (Jeff Astle, if you are asking) and that leads us on nicely to the latest excellent column from Sportsmail's Martin Samuel.
Click on the above link to read on how Roy Hodgson has turned England into West Brom, where success is just reaching tournaments these days. It's a top read.
Daniel Sturridge is just one of two players who survive from the 2-1 defeat by Uruguay - a match where the England striker failed to make a mark in attack.
The Liverpool hitman spent most of his time trying to influence play down the flanks, and as much as he touched the ball in Sao Paulo, fans will hope he finds his goal scoring form from the Italy game this afternoon. Here is his heat map from the defeat by the South Americans.

'The Minerao is a handsome setting. Architecturally striking from the outside, an atmospheric bowl inside.
'It is the home of Cruzeiro, the reigning Brazilian champions, where Ronaldo started his professional career. And once again, the locals are siding with England’s opponents. The teams are out limbering up.'

On this page we will be sticking with everything England in their clash with Costa Rica.
But if you want to follow where the group drama is then click on the above link to follow Italy vs Uruguay with Jack Gaughan.
It's effectively a knock-out game between those two so should produce a few fireworks.
Yes England are hopeless and are out but they can save some face and avoid finishing bottom.
A comfortable win over Costa Rica would be enough to finish above the loser of Italy and Uruguay, who are battling out for the final last 16 place in Group D.
Italy need just a point to join Costa Rica in the knockout-stages, while Uruguay must win. Costa Rica need one point to finish top.
Costa Rica have already beaten the two teams England have been defeated by, so you can't blame Roy Hodgson for looking towards assistant boss Paulo Wanchope for advice.
On a serious note, Hodgson has told ITV before the game he is more bothered by the performance than the result today. That's not a particularity encouraging sign is it?
Yes it's been a hapless campaign - the worse since the 1950s but have the performances really been THAT bad?
Costa Rica are already through and need just a point to finish top of the group. With this in mind, you can back England to win with both teams scoring at 3/1 with Coral. Click here for more on that offer and other potential bets.
England are as boss Roy Hodgson confirmed yesterday, with nine change made from the 2-1 defeat by Uruguay. Only Gary Cahill and Daniel Sturridge survive the cull.
Costa Rica by contrast make just two switches, with Michael Umana and Christian Bolanos being replaced by Randall Brenes and Roy Miller.
Navas, Gonzalez, Borges, Duarte, Campbell, Ruiz, Brenes, Diaz, Gamboa, Tejeda, Miller.
Foster, Jones, Cahill, Smalling, Shaw, Lampard, Wilshere, Milner, Barkley, Lallana, Sturridge.
...well I damn hope so. This is of course the third and final installment of England's horror Brazil 2014 campaign where a side that will form part of the next generation will take on Costa Rica.
It should be the start of a new era with a much changed side lining up this afternoon, but is this World Cup just the tip of the iceberg in a huge problem that will run on into Euro 2016 qualifying and beyond?
Follow Sportsmail's coverage of the World Cup as England prepare to play their final Group D match against Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte.
The Three Lions have already been dumped out the tournament following painfully narrow defeats by Italy and Uruguay, and are only playing for pride against the Central American side.
By contrast Costa Rica have already qualified from the group in one of the tournament's biggest shocks so far, and will be going for a hat-trick of wins in an attempt to qualify as group winners.
