Japan 1-4 Colombia World Cup 2014 LIVE: Jackson Martinez scores twice as Faryd Mondragon becomes oldest World Cup player ever

  • Jackson Martinez fires South Americans ahead after a fine James Rodriguez assist
  • Juan Cuadrado fires in a penalty as the Japanese face an upward struggle to stay in the tournament
  • Japan must win to keep alive their hopes of reaching the last 16
  • Colombia already through to knock-out stages for first time since 1990
  • South American side need one point to progress as group winners
  • Ivory Coast win against Greece would eliminate Asian side from Brazil 2014

Colombia striker Jackson Martinez and their emerging £37million superstar James Rodriguez put  Los Cafeteros into the knockout stages with a 100 per cent record, and there was an emotional appearance for 43-year-old Faryd Mondragon, who became the oldest ever player to appear in a World Cup.

Manager Jose Pekerman brought on the veteran ‘keeper – who went to his first World Cup in 1994 – for the remaining five minutes and he was given a hero’s ovation as he replaced David Ospina and took Roger Milla’s age record.

By that stage, Colombia were secure in the knowledge that they will go into Saturday’s last-16 clash against Uruguay as Group C winners and in perfect nick.

What a night! Rodriguez's incredible goal has capped off three straight wins for Colombia who go through as group winners.

Joining them in the last 16 are Greece, who scored a penalty with just 30 seconds of injury time to play.

The last 16 will now see Colombia take on Uruguay and Costa Rica vs Greece - the latter obviously a bit of a surprise there.

GOAL! Japan 1-4 COLOMBIA

90min: It's Mondragon! Sorry, just kidding but it is a Colombia substitute that scores as James Rodriguez collects a Martinez pass before leaving a Japan player in knots and clipping a cute finish past Eiji Kawashima.

Finishin in style: James Rodriguez of Colombia scores his team's fourth goal past goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima of Japan

Colombia and Japan substitution

85min: Ready, folks. Here is one of the great World Cup moments

Faryd Mondragon comes on for Colombia and at the age of 43 is the oldest player EVER to appear in a World Cup finals after replacing Ospina in goal.

England fans may remember him being the keeper who David Beckham scored a free-kick against at France 98. He was even at World Cup 94! A massive cheer greets his appearance and rightly so.

Japan also make a switch as Kagawa is replaced by Hiroshi Kiyotake.

22:40
GOAL! Japan 1-3 COLOMBIA

82min: Japan, here is what you are missing. All the huffing and puffing has come to nothing as they are hot on the counter attack.

Jackson Martinez runs inside the box, and after cutting inside curls across goal and into the corner.

22:39

78min: It's almost like news of Ivory Coast's goal has reached Japan's team. They still attack but the shots are becoming desperate and more far out now. Yuto Nagatomo is the latest to fire straight at Ospina's near post where the keeper collects.

22:35

75min: The news is only getting worse for Japan. Ivory Coast have equalised and as it stands, they will now be joining Colombia in the last 16. By my calculation that means Japan now need three goals to progress on goal difference.

Down and nearly out: Japan's forward Yoshito Okubo lies on the floor following a missed chance
22:31
Japan substitution

72min: Yoichiro Kakitani replaces Okazaki for Japan.

22:30

68min: Since falling behind again, Japan have been all over Colombia. I wouldn't be surprised if they score again in the next 20 minutes. The trouble is they need two goals as it stands with Greece still winning against Ivory Coast.

22:26

65min: Guarin is booked following a foul on Okubo, but the forward blows a big chance to equalise moments later as he pounces on a near post cross only to blast over.

No action: Balanta avoided punishment for his elbow on Okazaki
22:25
Japan substitution

62min: Japan make a second change as Hotaru Yamaguchi replaces Aoyama.

Meanwhile Colombia are still lucky to have 11 men on the pitch after Eder Balanta throws a clear elbow to the face of Okazaki.

The Japan striker even picks up a nosebleed following the incident but no action is taken by the referee.

22:19

61min: Konno was at fault for the penalty in the first half but he nearly helps get his side level again. A lofted cross towards the back post has Ospina punching at thin air, but Okubo doesn't get enough of his head to the ball to nod home.

22:18
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein in Cuiaba

'At 22-years-old, twinkle-toed James Rodriguez of Colombia has shown he deserves to be regarded as one of the finest young player in the world.

'So call me old-fashioned, but shouldn’t he be playing his club football for more than the few thousand who pay at the gate in Monaco.'

Back in front: Jackson Martinez of Colombia shoots and scores his team's second goal
Rock the baby: Colombia's forward Jackson Martinez (C) celebrates with his team-mates after scoring
22:17

58min: That changes very little in this group. Greece are still going through to the last 16 along with Colombia as they remain in the lead against Ivory Coast.

Meanwhile Japan attempted to respond with Kagawa, whose snap shot from 20 yards flies over the bar.

22:14
GOAL! Japan 1-2 COLOMBIA

55min: And there's another million on Rodriguez's value. Such is his presence, four Japan defenders surround him inside the box, only for the midfielder to quickly feed in Jackson Martinez who fires low across goal to restore Colombia's lead.

22:14

54min: With each passing minute, it's like Rodriguez is adding another million to his value.

From the left, the midfielder whips in an inch perfect outswinging free-kick towards the back post, which Carbonero heads wide.

22:11

51min: It's the livewire Rodriguez having an early say in how this game is run too, as he injects some pace into proceedings by darting past a challenge before seeing a shot deflected wide from 20 yards.

In the shade: Colombia and Japan faced off at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba
22:09

48min: The introduction of Rodriguez suggests Colombia mean business - so we can do away with those conspiracy theories.

They have started the better side in this half too as Japan are forced to defend the opening moments.

22:06
SECOND-HALF: Colombia make two changes at the start of the half

Colombia's superstar from this tournament James Rodriguez comes on along with Carlos Carbonero, replacing Quintero and Cuadrado.

22:03
PLAYER WATCH: Shinji Kagawa (Japan)

Japan have had to attack in this match, and to their credit it's exactly what they have done.

Kagawa's heat map shows a far more attacking player than the Ivory Coast clash, and only poor finishing from the Asian side are hampering them in the final third.

21:52
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein in Cuiaba

'Kagawa’s deflected effort was the 10th shot on goal for Japan in the opening 40 minutes. Can’t fault their ambition even if their accuracy is a little faulty.'

To defend Joe, he said that before Okazaki started using his head a bit more...

Heads I win: Shinji Okazaki of Japan scores his team's equaliser on the cusp of half-time
Back in it: Shinji Okazaki of Japan celebrates scoring his team's equaliser
21:50

But that still isn't enough for Japan to reach the last 16. Greece still lead Ivory Coast, but if it stays like that in Fortaleza, Japan would only need one more goal to progress.

21:46
HALF-TIME: Japan 1-1 Colombia
Tussle: Japan's Keisuke Honda (left) and Colombia's Carlos Valdes fight for the ball
21:46
GOAL! JAPAN 1-1 Colombia

45+1min: Talk about leaving it late! With literally the last touch of the half, Shinji Okazaki breaks free from his marker to squeeze home a header into the bottom corner.

21:45

45min: Meanwhile we have quite possibly had the most boring five minutes ever played in a football match in Cuiaba (needs double checking) Japan have run out of steam in attack and could do with some regrouping at the break. There will be one minute added on.

21:44

42min: Big goal in Fortaleza. Greece have taken the lead against Ivory Coast and as it stands they will be heading for the last 16. It's like the spirit of Euro 2004 all over again. Click on the link at the top of the page to follow all the action there.

21:39
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein in Cuiaba

'South America are unstoppable so far in this World Cup. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay already qualified for the knockout stages. Only need Ecuador to join them on Wednesday for the perfect record.'

Paying the penalty: Colombia's forward Jackson Martinez (right) is fouled by Japan's defender Yasuyuki Konno
21:39

36min: This is bordering on dangerous play, but I can't argue with any player attempting an overhead kick and Okubo's effort from a cross goes just as close to hitting the back of the net as it creeps over the bar as it does to connecting with Fredy Guarin's face.

21:36
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein in Cuiaba

'Obviously, most conspiracy theories are rubbish (see 20.59). Colombia look like they want to win this game to join Holland as 100 per centers, and who’s to say they couldn’t beat Brazil anyway in this kind of joyous attacking form. And this, remember, is essentially their reserve team.'

21:34

33min: As long as Colombia keep giving Japan senseless free-kicks, the Asian side still have a chance to get back into this.

Honda's radar is starting to kick into gear, as his low dipping set-piece across goal falls just wide.

Darting past: Japan's Shinji Okazaki controls the ball past Colombia's Pablo Armero
21:32

32min: Japan have won a number of corners now, and they keep playing them short. Colombia finally wake up to the tactic and close down before they header clear Honda's lofted delivery into the box

21:30
From InfostradaLive
21:29
From Mail on Sunday's Joe Bernstein in Cuiaba

'Six Manchester United players have already scored in this World Cup – Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Javier Hernandez, Nani and Marouane Fellaini. Can Shinji Kagawa be a magnificent seventh for Japan tonight?'

21:28

26min: Top move from Japan, by far their best of the match. Kagawa is alert to pounce on to a headed flick on from the left flank, dancing his way past a marker on the edge of the box before seeing his near post shot pushed behind by Ospina.

It was similar to Neymar's second goal for Brazil yesterday, but Ospina is a tougher keeper to beat than Charles Itandje of Cameroon.

Dance off: Colombian player celebrate after Juan Cuadrado scored the opening goal
21:24
From OptaJack
21:24

23min: Honda is perhaps lacking some drive from free-kicks this evening. Japan win another set-piece in a promising position 25 yards outs, but again the midfielder can only find the wall.

21:21

20min: A bit of a shame from a Japan point of view who up until that point were controlling the game. As it stands Colombia win the group and with Ivory Coast and Greece drawing 0-0, they would be qualifying with the African side.

21:17
GOAL! Japan 0-1 COLOMBIA

17min: Cheerio Japan? Juan Cuadrado rockets a penalty down the centre of the goal, before going off to celebrate with a typical touchline dance - not one of their best I'm afraid to say.

Spot on: Colombia's midfielder Juan Cuadrado (11) fires home a spot-kick against Japan
21:16
PENALTY (Colombia)

What is Yasuyuki Konno doing? A needless and late sliding challenge brings down JAckson Martinez for a stonewall penalty, picking up a yellow card for his troubles.

21:15

15min: The Japanese teasing goes on, this time it's from distance though as Atsuto UChida and Makoto Hasebe fire narrowly wide from 25 yards.

21:14

12min: Japan still continue to tease at creating something meaningful, but despite winning a corner, it's taken short before Shinji Kagawa's eventual cross is cleared.

21:11

9min: After a slow start, Japan are starting to gain some control now but are only getting brief glimpses of goal.

Yoshito Okubo takes the ball well inside the box while surrounded by defenders, but shooting becomes a different challenge altogether and his effort is blocked before another attempt from 25 yards moments later flies wide.

Gathering: The Japanese team huddle before the game
21:08

6min: Japan win a free-kick 25 yards from goal but Keisuke's Honda's free-kick deflects off the wall before David Ospina collects with ease.

21:04

3min: It's Japan who need to win but it's Colombia doing all the attacking so far. Juan Quintero and Jackson Martinez link up in a one-two on the edge of the box, but the Japan defence do just enough to prevent either from getting a shot on goal.

Pressured: Colombia's forward Jackson Martinez (left) and Japan's forward Keisuke Honda vie for the ball

20:59
From Mail on Sunday's Joe Bernstein in Cuiaba

'Final group games are always a great source of conspiracy theories, so here’s one. If Colombia lose heavily and finish second in Group C instead of first, they’ll avoid a quarter-final clash with Brazil.

'Is that why star man James Rodriguez has been left out tonight in Cuiaba?'

20:56
Out come the teams in Cuiaba

It's a sunny late afternoon but with conditions having cooled I'm hoping for a more fast-paced match than what we were given with England and Costa Rica earlier. The pitch is at least fully covered in shade.

Just in case you haven't seen it yet...

...here is the shocking moment where Luis Suarez appears to sink his gnashers into the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini.

20:47
PLAYER WATCH: Shinji Kagawa (Japan)

Shinji Kagawa has been recalled by Japan for their final group match, but can the Manchester United star help fire his side into the last 16?

Kagawa started Japan's first game in a 2-1 reverse by Ivory Coast, and looking at his heat map from the game saw plenty of the ball on the left flank.

You would feel if Japan are to go through, the midfielder is going to have to play a pivotal role tonight.

One last push: Japan's squad warm up inside the Arena Pantanal
20:35
As it stands in Group D...

Colombia are through and need just a point to set up a last 16 meeting with Uruguay.

Ivory Coast can join them with a victory over Greece and even a point will be enough if Japan fail to beat Colombia.

Japan and Greece both must win and rely on results elsewhere to go through.

It could get complicated through the night regarding goal difference, so I'll keep you posted.

20:22
Fancy goals galore and Colombia to win?

Colombia have been by far the stand-out team in this group and against an inferior Japan side will be favourites to record a hat-trick of victories.

But with Japan needing to throw everything at the South American side to stay in this tournament, surely they are capable of grabbing a goal or two in their battle to remain at Brazil 2014.

With that in mind get yourselves over to Coral who are offering 7/2 on Colombia to win with both teams scoring. Click here for more on that offer as well as other betting options.

Team news from Cuiaba

It's a much changed Colombia side, with keeper David Ospina, Pablo Armero and Juan Cuadrado the only players remaining from the side which defeated Ivory Coast 2-1.

Japan make two changes with Shinji Kagawa and Toshihiro Aoyama coming in for Yuya Osako and Hotaru Yamaguchi.

Colombia are already through, but would they rather avoid winning the group so they can set up a last 16 meeting with Costa Rica?

So who has the bite for a last 16 meeting with Uruguay?

See what I did there? Uruguay have progressed from Group D as runners-up, despite Luis Suarez's latest biting scandal, but who will they face from Group C?

In all likelihood, it will all be Colombia as they go for a point to top the group, but will Japan join them? Team news next.

Follow Sportsmail's coverage of the World Cup as Colombia take on Japan in their final Group C game in Cuiaba, with a last 16 place on the line.

Japan are staring in the face of a group stage exit at the Arena Pantanal and must beat Colombia to have any sort of chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Colombia already have a last 16 spot in the bag and will target to collect at least one point to ensure they progress as group winners.
