Final World Cup squad announced: Mustafi, Schmelzer and Volland miss out

On Monday, Joachim Löw confirmed his final squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. One day after Germany’s 2-2 draw with Cameroon in Mönchengladbach, the national coach named the 23 players who will board the plane to South America. Captain Philipp Lahm will lead Die Mannschaft, while striker Miroslav Klose is the most experienced player in the squad, with 131 international caps to his name to date

To reach a final 23-man squad consisting of 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers, the 26-strong contingent from the South Tyrol training camp had to be reduced by three players. As a result, Shkodran Mustafi, Marcel Schmelzer and Kevin Volland will not join their colleagues in Brazil.

Speaking about his decision, Joachim Löw said: “I was delighted with how all the players presented themselves in South Tyrol. Every single one of them worked incredibly hard. The players did exactly what I had hoped they would: they made our decision unbelievably difficult. Of course, Shkodran, Marcel and Kevin are very disappointed right now. I understand that, because they were right to be optimistic about their chances of travelling to Brazil. Hansi Flick and I informed the players of our decision in person. All three players still have the chance to play at major tournaments in their careers.”

Endgültiger WM-Kader

Löw: "I’m 100 per cent convinced about every player"

National coach Löw continued by discussing the merits of his final squad, saying: “I’m 100 per cent convinced about every player. We’ve got the right blend of young, gifted footballers and players with plenty of tournament experience who know what really matters in such situations. It’s a balanced squad with cover in every position. Our players have character and so does the team. We’ll fly confidently to Brazil with this squad; we’ve got big ambitions to fulfil there.”

The national players now have a final few days at home and will then reconvene in Mainz on Thursday. On Friday, they will play their international benefit match against Armenia there (live on ZDF from 20:45 CET) before flying to Brazil from Frankfurt on Saturday.
